Carnival month, bonfire month
Luxembourg in February, when the whole country dresses up
February in Luxembourg belongs to carnival, which runs from Candlemas on 2 February to Ash Wednesday, with Diekirch's big parade on 7 February 2027 and the Buergbrennen bonfires on the first Sunday after Carnival. It's still cold, 2.2°C on average at Findel, but sunshine climbs to 79.5 hours and there are no bank holidays.

Full read: 4 min
- February is carnival month in Luxembourg, from 2 February to Ash Wednesday.
- Diekirch's parade, the biggest, starts on Sunday 7 February 2027 at 14:00.
- On the first Sunday after Carnival, Buergbrennen bonfires burn across the country.
- Findel averages 2.2°C and there are no bank holidays in the month.
If I had to go in winter without the Christmas markets as the draw, I'd pick February. Luxembourg's carnival is a village affair of fancy-dress balls and parades, and watching a Buergbrennen go up at dusk is about as genuinely local as a visit gets. I'd just dodge the school holiday week if I wanted quieter hotels.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
Diekirch's carnival parade
One of the biggest in the country, drawing around 20,000 people according to Visit Luxembourg. In 2027 it sets off on Sunday 7 February at 14:00.
Luxembourg carnival -
02 Most beautiful
A bonfire in every village
On the first Sunday after Carnival each village lights its own Buerg at nightfall, usually a huge pyre with a cross in the middle, with pea soup and mulled wine to keep warm.

03 My tip
Leave your best tie at home
On the Thursday before Carnival Sunday, groups of women in costume roam many towns snipping off men's ties. It's all in good fun, but don't wear one you're fond of.

04 To save money
Mind Luxembourg's half-term
Local schools break up for Carnival from 6 to 14 February 2027. Travelling either side of that week should mean quieter hotels and attractions.
Luxembourg public holidays
What I would book
Most people write February off as dead season, and in Luxembourg that would be a mistake. The weather is still cold and the countryside is asleep, but almost every village throws a fancy-dress ball, parades wind through the towns and the month ends, more or less, with bonfires on the hilltops. Of the winter months, it’s the one with the most character.
Candlemas to Ash Wednesday
Carnival here is called Fuesent, and it kicks off at Candlemas. On 2 February, a Tuesday in 2027, comes Liichtmëssdag in Luxembourg, when children go out at dusk with handmade lanterns and sing door to door for sweets and coins, and the next day is St Blaise’s. From then until Ash Wednesday, the government portal says, almost every village puts on a ball or two, the largest being in Esch-sur-Alzette, Bettendorf and Differdange.
A few days stand out. On the Thursday before Carnival Sunday, costumed groups of women take to the streets and cut off the ties of any man they meet. Then come Fuessonndeg and Fuesméindeg, Carnival Sunday and Monday, the busiest days for parades. The season has its own treats too, fried Verwurrelter and Nonnefäscht and Stretzegebäck, a choux-style pastry. The full story is in Luxembourg carnival.
Which parade should you see?
If you only catch one, make it Diekirch. Visit Luxembourg puts it among the country’s largest, drawing some 20,000 people, and by tradition it falls on the Sunday ahead of Rose Monday, which in 2027 means 7 February from 14:00. The town sits in the north and makes a good day out on its own, which you’ll find in Diekirch.
One date I’d keep an eye on is Sunday 28 February 2027, when the capital’s tourist office calendar lists Bretzelsonndeg in Luxembourg. By the fourth-Sunday-of-Lent rule it ought to fall in March, so I wouldn’t move a trip for it until the date is confirmed.
There are alternatives. Schifflange’s parade is listed for 14 February 2027, and the government portal also singles out Esch-sur-Alzette, Pétange, Remich, the night-time parade in Wasserbillig and a children’s one in Kayl. Their 2027 dates weren’t out by late September 2026, so check again in January. And don’t assume it’s all over on Ash Wednesday, because Luxembourg keeps parading afterwards.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Diekirch before prices climb.
A straw man in the Moselle, fires on the hills
On Ash Wednesday, Remich sends carnival off in its own way. The Stréimännchen, a straw man as big as a person and dressed in cast-offs, is handed an empty bottle and an empty wallet, paraded through the streets in the evening, then set alight and thrown into the Moselle from the bridge. In leap years it becomes a straw woman, the Stréifrächen. That corner of the country is covered in Remich.
A few days later it’s the Buergbrennen, on the first Sunday after Carnival. Young people build the Buerg in the afternoon, usually a vast pyre with a cross in the centre, a torchlit procession follows and the fire goes up after dark. Some villages leave the lighting to whichever couple married last. Expect Bouneschlupp, Ierzebulli pea soup and mulled wine, and, to my mind, the best chance you’ll get to see the real Luxembourg.
Cold, but brighter
MeteoLux puts February at Findel at 2.2°C (36°F), barely warmer than January, with 59.5 mm of rain and 7.1 foggy days. The real difference is light, with 79.5 hours of sunshine, almost thirty more than the month before, while black ice drops to 0.4 days.
The records show how much it can swing. Findel’s coldest reading since 1947, −20.2°C, came on 2 February 1956, yet 27 February 2019 reached 19.8°C, and the strongest gust on record, 146.3 km/h, blew on 28 February 1990. The full picture is in Luxembourg weather.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Diekirch before prices climb.
Planning a carnival weekend
A weekend with a parade, plus the following Sunday for the Buergbrennen if you can stretch it, based in the capital or the north. Flights land at Findel, and the train through Brussels or Paris is an easy alternative. I’d avoid Luxembourg’s school break from 6 to 14 February 2027 if possible. In between, museums, a Moselle winery for Wine Cheese Enjoy and, on a dry day, a short Mullerthal walk.
Two practical points for anyone coming from the UK. You’re outside Schengen, so expect the EES biometric registration at the border, and your passport must be less than ten years old with at least three months’ validity after you leave. And pack for standing about outdoors, because a parade route or a bonfire field at dusk in February is colder than any average suggests, and a waterproof layer earns its place in the bag.
For the start of winter see Luxembourg in January, and for Easter and the first reopenings, Luxembourg in March. The season as a whole is in Luxembourg in winter, and the year side by side is in the best time to visit Luxembourg.
If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Diekirch and choose by the reviews.
A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.

Still wintry. Findel averages 2.2°C with 59.5 mm of rain and around seven foggy days, but the light is noticeably better than in January, with 79.5 hours of sunshine. February also holds the country's cold record, −20.2°C in 1956.
When is carnival in Luxembourg?
The season runs from Candlemas on 2 February to Ash Wednesday, according to the government portal. The busiest days are Carnival Sunday and Monday, though plenty of balls and parades carry on afterwards.
Where's the best carnival parade in Luxembourg?
Diekirch's is the biggest, with around 20,000 spectators, and in 2027 it starts on 7 February at 14:00. Schifflange, Esch-sur-Alzette, Remich, Pétange and the night parade at Wasserbillig are also well known, and Kayl runs one for children.
What is the Buergbrennen?
Bonfires lit all over Luxembourg on the first Sunday after Carnival to drive winter away. Youth clubs build them from branches, straw and old Christmas trees, and they're set alight once it's dark.
Are there bank holidays in Luxembourg in February?
No. None of Luxembourg's 11 public holidays falls in February. What there is, though, is the Carnival school break, from 6 to 14 February 2027, when open attractions get busier.
