The calm waters of the Upper Sûre Lake between forested hills, with clouds reflected on the surface

Twelve views, ranked and rated

Luxembourg's best viewpoints, from the Corniche to the Upper Sûre

The best viewpoints in Luxembourg, to my mind, are the Chemin de la Corniche in the capital, Gringlee above Bourscheid Castle, the Belvédère Burfelt 70 m over the Upper Sûre lake, and the top station of the Vianden chairlift. Nearly all are free, and most of the northern ones can only be reached on foot.

Full read: 3 min

  • The best viewpoint in the capital is the Chemin de la Corniche; in the north, Gringlee above Bourscheid.
  • The Belvédère Burfelt stands 70 m above the Upper Sûre lake.
  • Nearly every viewpoint is free; the Vianden chairlift and Belval blast furnace are the exceptions.
  • Many northern viewpoints are walk-in only, including Gringlee, Runtschelt, the Fändelchen and the Victor Hugo viewpoint.

With only the capital, the Corniche early in the morning and the Pfaffenthal lift after dark give you the two views that matter. With a car and a spare day, head north, Gringlee in the morning and the Upper Sûre lake in the afternoon, because that's the scenery nobody expects of Luxembourg.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 To save money

    A free rooftop terrace

The sixth-floor rooftop of the Galeries Lafayette, in the Royal-Hamilius complex, has a free public terrace with 360-degree views over the city, according to the capital's tourist office.

  2. 02 My tip

The lift closes one Monday a month

The Pfaffenthal panoramic lift runs 5:45 to 1:00 and is free, but on the first Monday of each month it stops for maintenance from 9:00. Dates left this year are 5 October, 2 November and 7 December 2026.

    Pfaffenthal lift
  3. 03 Worth the splurge

The city viewpoints with a guide

The LCTO runs Top City Views, two to three hours from viewpoint to viewpoint in the old town, from €150 per group. Booking less than ten working days ahead adds a €50 surcharge.

  4. 04 Getting there

    No driving up to Gringlee

Visit Éislek warns that Gringlee can't be reached by car. It sits on the Escapardenne Lee Trail and local trails BS 1, BS 4 and BS 6, near Bourscheid-Moulin.

My ranking, scored

Luxembourg's viewpoints, my ranking

I rank by what you see and how hard it is to get there. A view that explains the landscape, a castle above its valley or a city above its ravines, scores higher than one that is merely high. The scores are my opinion.

  1. Chemin de la Corniche

Six hundred metres of rampart above the Alzette, the Grund and the Rham plateau. The writer Batty Weber called it the most beautiful balcony in Europe, and he had a point.

    Price: Free

    9.6 out of 10

  2. Gringlee

A bird's-eye view of the Sûre meander with Bourscheid Castle beyond. Visit Éislek counts it among the best-known viewpoints in the country.

    Price: Free

    9.4 out of 10

  3. Belvédère Burfelt

A 2016 timber platform with a glass balustrade, 70 m above the Upper Sûre lake. The cleanest view in the north.

    Price: Free

    9.2 out of 10

  4. Vianden chairlift, top station

The castle straight ahead and the town at your feet. Walk up or ride the country's only chairlift, running until 19 October 2026.

    Price: €9.50 return by chairlift

    9.0 out of 10

  5. Pfaffenthal panoramic lift

A glass cabin 71 m high, with a see-through floor, over the Alzette and the Red Bridge. Free and running until one in the morning.

    Price: Free

    8.8 out of 10

  6. Adolphe Bridge

Opened in 1903, when it had the largest stone arch in the world. Since 2018 a walkway under the deck lets you cross the Pétrusse valley on foot.

    Price: Free

    8.5 out of 10

  7. Runtschelt

A bench above the Upper Sûre lake south of Kaundorf, which Visit Éislek recommends at sunrise and sunset. On foot only.

    Price: Free

    8.4 out of 10

  8. Wormer Koeppchen

The 1925 chapel of St Donatus at the top of a vineyard sloping at more than 70 degrees, with Wormeldange and the Moselle below.

    Price: Free

    8.2 out of 10

  9. Belval blast furnace A

A climb to 40 m up the only blast furnace open to visitors in the country. The one view of the industrial south you won't get anywhere else.

    Price: €5; €0.01 under 21

    8.0 out of 10

  10. Kinneksknäppchen

The king's little hill, facing the ruins of Brandenbourg Castle. Inside you see details; from here you see the whole castle.

    Price: Free

    7.8 out of 10

  11. Victor Hugo viewpoint

Above the meanders of the Our near Bivels, where Victor Hugo made sixty drawings. There's a small painter's easel and room for a picnic.

    Price: Free

    7.6 out of 10

  12. Perekop

An iron ladder climbs the cleft in this Berdorf rock to a lookout over the Mullerthal forest.

    Price: Free

    7.2 out of 10

Luxembourg is small, but it isn’t flat. The capital sits on ravines, the north is one steep-sided valley after another with castles on top, and the Mullerthal hides rocks you climb by ladder. That adds up to viewpoints everywhere, almost all free, and a few that surprise people who think of Luxembourg as banks and EU buildings.

In the capital, the ravines do the work

Start with the obvious one. The Chemin de la Corniche follows about 600 m of rampart, from rue du Saint-Esprit to the Bock casemates, above the Alzette valley, the Grund and the Rham plateau. It had steps until 1870, and when the fortress was dismantled most of the parapet was cleared to open up the view. Go early, while it’s quiet, and walk it in both directions, because the view changes as the Grund opens up below you.

Then the Pfaffenthal lift, a glass cabin 71 m up, free from 5:45 to 1:00, facing the Red Bridge. The capital’s tourist office rounds out its own top ten with the Adolphe Bridge, the Three Towers, the Red Bridge, Fort Obergrünewald in the Dräi Eechelen park, the Bock rock, the Holy Ghost Citadel with its rose garden and the hill of the National Monument of Solidarity, the free Galeries Lafayette terrace and the eighth-floor bar at the Sofitel, the last one only if you buy a drink.

Which northern viewpoint?

If you only do one, make it Gringlee. From a rock face above Bourscheid-Moulin you look down on the Sûre meander with Bourscheid Castle in the distance, one of the best-known views in the country according to Visit Éislek. There’s no road to it; the Lee Trail passes by, and paragliders launch from here. The castle has its own page, Bourscheid Castle.

Second choice is the Belvédère Burfelt, a timber lookout with a glass rail hanging over the Upper Sûre reservoir, a ten-minute walk from the car park. Early risers should head for Runtschelt near Kaundorf, a bench above the same lake that Visit Éislek recommends at sunrise and sunset.

If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Esch-sur-Sûre for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.

Vianden from every angle

Vianden can be admired from all sides, and there’s a choice of spots. The easiest is the top station of the Vianden chairlift, the only one in the country, running until 19 October 2026 at €9.50 return. On foot, try the Fändelchen, named after the national flag on its mast. Near Bivels, the Victor Hugo viewpoint looks over the meanders of the Our, where the writer made sixty drawings.

Views you can drive to

Not every view needs boots. The Houfëls near Boulaide stands at 457 m, with a 1934 pavilion you can only admire from outside and two Second World War guns behind it. The Teifelslee, between Goesdorf and Tadler, is reachable by car and makes a good picnic stop above the Sûre. At the Niklosbierg near Vianden you park at the foot of a tower and climb a few dozen steps to see the upper reservoir of the Our pumped-storage plant.

A note for next spring. Between 24 April and 14 June 2026 the capital hosted LOOK 360°, a mobile panoramic lift whose gondolas rotate as they rise. The LCTO lists it as closed for the season, and no 2027 dates have been published.

If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Esch-sur-Sûre for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.

The Moselle, the Mullerthal and the south

On the Moselle the viewpoint is a vineyard, the Wormer Koeppchen at Wormeldange, with the 1925 chapel of St Donatus above a slope of over 70 degrees. In the Mullerthal, the iron ladder of the Perekop climbs a cleft to a lookout, and Berdorf’s Aquatower has a platform at 50 m. In the south you can climb Belval’s blast furnace A to 40 m for €5, and in Dudelange the tower on Mont Saint-Jean gives panoramic views over the town.

Closer to the capital, two of the Syre valley municipalities have views of their own. In Mensdorf, the climb up the Widdebierg, the hill it shares with Flaxweiler, ends in views the route page calls unrivalled, and in Manternach the Manternacher Fiels trail comes out on the Lellig plateau with Grevenmacher on the horizon. Neither is famous, and both are free and reachable by train, which to my mind makes them worth a morning.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Esch-sur-Sûre on GetYourGuide.

If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.

Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best viewpoints in Luxembourg?

For me, the Chemin de la Corniche in the capital, Gringlee above Bourscheid Castle, the Belvédère Burfelt over the Upper Sûre lake and the top station of the Vianden chairlift. All four are free, apart from the chairlift if you don't walk up.

Is there an entrance fee for the Chemin de la Corniche?

No. It's a public promenade along the old ramparts, about 600 m long from rue du Saint-Esprit to the Bock casemates, and you can walk it at any time for free.

Where are the best views in Luxembourg City?

The Chemin de la Corniche, the Bock rock, the Pfaffenthal lift, the Adolphe Bridge and the free sixth-floor terrace at the Galeries Lafayette. The LCTO adds the Three Towers, the Red Bridge, Fort Obergrünewald and the Holy Ghost Citadel.

Which viewpoints can you drive to?

The Houfëls near Boulaide, at 457 m with a 1934 pavilion, the Teifelslee between Goesdorf and Tadler, and the Niklosbierg at Vianden, with parking at the foot of its tower. Gringlee, Runtschelt and the Fändelchen are on foot only.

What is the highest point in Luxembourg?

The Kneiff, at 560 m, in the municipality of Troisvierges, according to STATEC. The neighbouring Buurgplaatz reaches 559 m. The official sources I've read don't present it as a viewpoint.

Where can I see Vianden Castle from above?

Visit Éislek suggests two spots, the Fändelchen, named after the national flag flying from its mast, and the top station of the chairlift, reached on foot or by chairlift.
