- Erpeldange-sur-Sûre has 2,662 residents where the Sûre and Alzette meet.
- Its castle has been the town hall since 1987 and is seen from outside only.
- The Patton memorial's address is in this commune, right by Ettelbruck.
- It's in merger talks with Diekirch, Ettelbruck and Schieren in the Nordstad.
I'd stop here between Ettelbruck and Diekirch to see the castle from its park and the Patton memorial. Half an hour well spent, not a destination in its own right.

What I would keep in mind

01 Most beautiful
A castle turned town hall
The castle, a small fort in the 12th century and a residence from 1630, was bought by the State in 1983 and has housed the council offices since 1987. You see it from its park, which has a memorial to Grand Duchess Charlotte.

02 My tip
The Patton memorial is in this commune
visitluxembourg gives the Patton memorial's address as 102 avenue J.-F. Kennedy, Erpeldange-sur-Sûre, even though everyone associates it with Ettelbruck.

03 My tip
Don't mix it up with the other Erpeldanges
There are two more places called Erpeldange, one in the commune of Wiltz and one in Bous-Waldbredimus on the Moselle side. This page is the one on the Sûre.
Erpeldange-sur-Sûre is the commune squeezed between Ettelbruck and Diekirch, right where the Alzette flows into the Sûre. It has three villages, Erpeldange-sur-Sûre, Ingeldorf and Burden, and 2,662 residents (STATEC, 1 January 2026). The commune’s website charts its growth from 718 people in 1850 to more than 2,000 since 1999. Its figures page lists the most common nationalities among residents, led by Luxembourgers and Portuguese, with a handful of Spaniards and Britons further down.
A castle with a long story
The commune calls itself the Gateway to the Ardennes on its website, and the castle’s address is, fittingly, 21 Porte des Ardennes. Its history is bound up with that castle. According to the commune, the lords of Erpeldange had a small fort, probably from the 12th century, which a century later gave way to a stone castle above the meeting of the two rivers. It passed through the Counts of Vianden and the Kerpen, Outscheid and Beifels families, and in 1630 the Gondersdorf family turned it into a stately residence, filling in the moats to lay out a park. In the 19th century, abandoned by the du Prel family, it became a presbytery, then passed through private hands until the State bought it in 1983. In 1987 the council moved in.
Inside are two Renaissance fireplaces of real artistic value, but because it’s the town hall, visitluxembourg makes clear it can only be seen from outside. The photo at the top shows the south doorway with its crowned coat of arms. The park is open and has a memorial to Grand Duchess Charlotte. For a short stop, I wouldn’t look anywhere else in the commune, and it’s easy to fit in between the two towns.
The Patton memorial, on the Ettelbruck boundary
Here’s a detail most people miss. visitluxembourg gives the address of the Patton memorial as 102 avenue J.-F. Kennedy, Erpeldange-sur-Sûre. It’s the ensemble everyone links with Ettelbruck, with the 1954 eagle, the 1970 statue of the general and a tank, and it’s a stone’s throw from the General Patton museum in Ettelbruck. The museum warns there’s no parking at the square.

Three Erpeldanges in a small country
Worth knowing if you’re looking at a map. The national register of localities has two other Erpeldanges, one inside the commune of Wiltz and another in Bous-Waldbredimus, over towards the Moselle. That’s why this commune carries the river in its name.
Staying and what’s ahead
STATEC counted one hotel and one campsite in 2025. For more choice, the obvious bases are Diekirch and Ettelbruck, one on each side. Erpeldange-sur-Sûre is one of four Nordstad communes preparing to merge, along with those two and Schieren, and a vote expected in autumn 2027. Beyond Diekirch, the valley runs on towards Bettendorf.
