Man-made lake and leisure area in Echternach

Echternach lake, thirty hectares on the edge of town

Echternach lake is a 30-hectare man-made lake at the entrance to town, surrounded by 375 hectares of forest. There's a path all the way round, pedalos, fishing with a permit and a free swimming area at Adventure Island, open 7:00 to 22:00 from 1 May to 30 September. The Roman villa and a free car park sit on its shore.

  • Echternach lake is man-made, 30 hectares, and surrounded by 375 hectares of forest.
  • The Adventure Island bathing area is free from 7:00 to 22:00, 1 May to 30 September.
  • You can walk round it, hire a pedalo and fish with a permit.
  • The Roman villa and a free car park are on its shore.

To me it's the after-walk plan rather than a destination. A lap of the water, feet in the lake in summer, the Roman villa on the way. And as a place to leave the car and ride the free town bus in, it's the most practical spot in Echternach.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 To save money

    Swimming costs nothing

The bathing area at Adventure Island, by the youth hostel, is free every day from 7:00 to 22:00 between 1 May and 30 September.

  2. 02 My tip

    Park here, bus into town

The car park at the entrance is free, and visitluxembourg suggests using the Nonnemillen car park by the lake and taking the free town bus into the centre.

A Roman villa on the shore

The remains of one of the largest villas in the Trier area lie by the water, with a Roman garden of more than 70 plants.

    On the Mullerthal Trail

What I would book

Don’t come to Echternach for the lake. But once you’re in Echternach, the lake is where the day ends. It’s a leisure reservoir at the edge of town with woods around it, a path to walk the full circuit and free swimming in summer, and it solves two things this region is short of, somewhere to cool off and somewhere to park without thinking about it.

What it actually is

According to visitluxembourg, it’s a 30-hectare artificial lake with a leisure centre built round it, right where you arrive in Echternach if you’re coming from Luxembourg City. A 375-hectare forest threaded with walking routes surrounds it, and a footpath loops the water. That path works for walking, roller skating or cycling, and the national tourist board lists it as an easy walk for anyone who’d rather skip the rocks and ladders.

Can you swim in it?

Yes, and it’s free. The bathing area is at Adventure Island, by the youth hostel, open every day from 7:00 to 22:00 between 1 May and 30 September. On the lake itself you can hire pedalos from the Pier’75 island, which in 2026 rented them daily from May to September, 11:00 to 18:00, with the last one going out half an hour before closing, and fishing is allowed all year with the right permit. visitluxembourg also advertises stand-up paddleboard hire, without giving a price.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Echternach on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

Paddleboarding and fishing, and the rules

Paddleboards are hired on the east side of the lake, on the island with the Pier’75 bistro. The official listing sets three conditions. You must be 12 to use a board on your own, non-swimmers have to wear a life jacket and the weight limit is 115 kg per board. If you bring your own board, you can’t launch from Pier’75; use the water access on the south side by the Echo car park, which also has showers. In the week of 29 September 2026 hire was only open on some days, so outside summer I wouldn’t count on it. For river paddling, the Sûre has canoe stretches with hire at Dillingen, and the Rosport reservoir is just up the road; I’ve gathered all of it in canoeing and kayaking in Luxembourg.

One mix-up I see a lot in searches. Eden au Lac isn’t part of the lake but a family hotel founded in 1982 on the Nonnesees hillside, with a pool and saunas, open in 2026 from 1 June to 14 November; it’s covered in hotels in Echternach.

For anglers, the lake holds both coarse and predatory fish and fishing is open all year, but only with a permit bought in advance from the lake’s operator at lac-echternach.lu, which also posts the rules. The nearest bus stop for the fishing and hire areas is Echternach Nonnemillen.

Around the shore there’s a bike park, an adventure playground, barbecue spots and, in summer, trampolines. There’s also a Maison de Nature, a nature house that groups and school classes can hire. The youth hostel has a small restaurant with a terrace, and the Route 1 trail notes mention a treetop ropes course nearby. With children, I think it’s the best place in Echternach to spend an afternoon.

A Roman villa by the water

The lake has something unusual beside it, the remains of a large Roman house. The Echternach Roman villa was, according to the government portal, one of the biggest and richest country estates around Trier, with 70 rooms on the ground floor. Today you see the foundations, a Roman garden and a visitor centre with scenes of daily life. Entry is free, but it only opens in season, which in 2027 runs from 27 March to 26 September.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Echternach on Expedia and filter by area before price.

Park here to see the town

This is the tip I’d use if you’re driving. There’s a large free car park at the lake entrance, and visitluxembourg suggests leaving your car at the Nonnemillen car park by the lake and riding the free town bus up to the centre of Echternach. It saves circling the old town looking for a space.

The lake on the Mullerthal Trail

If you walk Route 1 of the Mullerthal Trail, the lake turns up at the end. Following the operator’s six-day plan, the second day comes back from Moersdorf via Herborn and the Haard forest, and after the woods the path skirts the lake before entering town along an avenue by the Lady Chapel. After more than 19 km, a swim in July is a reward I wouldn’t skip.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Echternach lake and pick one that fits your day.

Events at the lake

visitluxembourg lists several annual events held around the lake, including the e-lake music festival, the Mill Man Trail sports event and an open-air cinema. The page gives no dates, so if you want to coincide with one, check the regional tourist office’s website before you book. The office itself is based in Echternach, so you can also ask in person.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.

If you still need a way in, check the best ticket deals to Luxembourg from where you are.
