The spa at Mondorf-les-Bains

Mondorf Domaine Thermal, Luxembourg's only thermal spa

Mondorf Domaine Thermal is Luxembourg's only thermal spa, in the village of Mondorf-les-Bains near the Moselle. It has a thermal pool at 36°C, a freshwater pool, 11 saunas and 3 steam rooms. In September 2026 two hours cost €32 on weekdays and €35 at weekends, with no booking needed, and under-16s may only use the thermal pool.

  • Mondorf Domaine Thermal has Luxembourg's only thermal pool, heated to 36°C.
  • It adds 11 saunas, 3 steam rooms, a freshwater pool and an 1,800 m² gym.
  • Two hours cost €32 on weekdays and €35 at weekends, with no booking (2026 prices).
  • Under-16s can only use the thermal pool; the saunas are textile-free.
  • Building works run in phases until 2030, but the spa stays open every day except 25-12 and 1-1.

If you're British and shy about saunas, know this before you go. The cabins are textile-free, towels allowed. I'd still book the four-hour ticket rather than the day pass, because four hours is plenty for the pool, a few saunas and lunch without watching the clock.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 To save money

    Weekdays are €3 cheaper

Every ticket costs €3 less from Monday to Friday than at weekends and on bank holidays. Two hours is €32 rather than €35, and a full day €52 rather than €55.

  2. 02 My tip

Pack two towels for the saunas

Swimwear isn't allowed in the sauna cabins and your skin mustn't touch the wood, so you need one towel to sit on and one to dry off. Robes and towels can also be hired on site.

  3. 03 Worth the splurge

A private sauna for your group

The Vippi is a private sauna with its own garden, loungers and showers for up to eight people, from €66 on the 2026 price list. It makes sense for a birthday or a weekend with friends.

  4. 04 Getting there

    Bus 413 from Luxembourg station

Bus 413 runs from the capital's main station to the Casino 2000 stop beside the spa in about 30 minutes. Public transport inside Luxembourg is free.

What I would book

My ranking, scored

What I'd do inside, in order

My scores out of 10 for a four-hour first visit. Everything below is included in the ticket apart from the private sauna.

  1. Thermal pool at 36°C

The reason to come, with a circuit of massage jets around the pool. The spa advises no more than 20 minutes at a stretch.

    9.3 out of 10

  2. Saunas in the park

Nine saunas and a steam room set round the 28°C pool under the old trees of the spa park. The largest, Suuri, takes up to 65 people.

    8.7 out of 10

  3. Grotto steam room

Luolaksi is a steam bath inside a thermal-water grotto, and to me the most original corner of the whole place.

    8.1 out of 10

  4. Salounge

A room built from salt bricks under orange light, meant to clear your airways. A good place to cool down between saunas.

    7.4 out of 10

  5. Classes and Aufguss sessions

All included and no booking. Just turn up a few minutes early, and try the birch-twig Aufguss in the Koivu sauna.

    6.9 out of 10

Most people who end up in Mondorf-les-Bains come for one thing, and it’s this. Mondorf Domaine Thermal sits on the only thermal spring in Luxembourg, and around it has grown a large complex of pools, saunas scattered through a park, a big gym and a medical wing that runs three-week cures. This page is about what you’ll find inside, what it costs and the house rules worth knowing before you pay.

A pool at 36 degrees, and everything around it

The centrepiece is the thermal pool, indoors and out, heated to 36°C. The water is salty and so heavy with minerals that you float more than you expect, and a circuit of massage jets runs round the edge, worked from feet to shoulders. The spa suggests no more than 20 minutes in one go, or two spells of 15, because the heat tires you more than you’d think. Nowhere is deeper than 1.45 metres, so non-swimmers can stand everywhere.

Next door there’s a freshwater pool at 28°C, the Uima Allas outdoor bath at 28 to 34°C depending on the weather, three jacuzzis and the Salounge, a salt-brick room for clearing your sinuses. The gym covers 1,800 m² with 130 machines, and group classes are included in the ticket.

Eleven saunas in a park

My favourite part is outdoors. Round the 28°C pool, nine saunas and a steam room are spread among century-old trees, each with a Finnish name and its own character. Suuri holds 65 people. Tekstiili runs cooler and requires a towel, and it’s the one I’d suggest if you’ve never been in a sauna. Luolaksi is a steam bath inside a thermal-water grotto. From the piazza you reach three more saunas and two steam rooms, including a sauna and a steam room for women only.

This is where British visitors tend to raise an eyebrow. Swimwear isn’t allowed in the sauna cabins, though you can keep a towel round you, and bare skin must never touch the wood. Swimwear is compulsory in the pools, and there’s a signposted nude area outside. Photos are banned throughout.

What does it cost, and which ticket?

The 2026 prices are for consecutive hours. On weekdays it’s €32 for two hours, €40.50 for three, €45 for four and €52 for the day, with €3 more on each at weekends and bank holidays. Overstay and you pay €9 per half hour started. Regulars can buy time bundles charged by the minute, from €165 for 15 hours.

Children can use only the thermal pool until they turn 16, those aged 2 to 15 pay 60% less, and babies go free. There’s 10% off for 16 to 27-year-olds and over-60s and 20% for students, on proof at the desk. Nothing needs booking except the private sauna and spa treatments, with massages from €69. For children, frankly, the ideas in Luxembourg with kids will go down better.

Found while looking for salt

The water’s backstory is a good one. In the 1840s engineers were drilling for rock salt, then scarce and expensive, and at Mondorf they hit a warm, heavily mineralised spring instead. The Kind borehole reached 730 metres, a European record until 1871, and the first spa guests arrived in 1847. Today’s water comes from the Michel Lucius spring, drilled in 1979 to 750 metres and yielding 440 litres a minute. The present complex opened on 1 May 1988, and the park around it was laid out in 1886 by Édouard André, the same landscape designer behind the capital’s municipal park.

Cures, insurance and building works to 2030

The Domaine is also a health centre. A thermal cure lasts 21 days, with treatments Monday to Saturday morning, covered for members of Luxembourg’s national health fund on a prescription from one of the spa’s own doctors. Everyone else is told to ask their own insurer, so I wouldn’t assume your GHIC or travel insurance will pay for anything beyond an emergency.

The site is being renovated in phases until 2030, including a new building and a full rebuild of both thermal pools, which the naturally acidic water has worn down. The operator says everything stays open throughout, but I’d check their website the week you travel.

Getting there and when to go

Bus 413 leaves Luxembourg’s main station and reaches the Casino 2000 stop in about 30 minutes, and costs nothing, since buses inside Luxembourg are free. Arriving by train from Brussels or Paris, that makes it an easy afternoon from the capital. Drivers leave the A13 at junction 12, and the 400-space car park is free for the first five hours. It’s open every day except 25 December and 1 January, 09:00 to 22:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 20:00 at weekends, with the thermal pool from 08:00.

My pick would be a midweek morning, when it’s cheaper and the loungers are free. To make a night of it, see hotels in Mondorf-les-Bains, and to compare other options, spa hotels in Luxembourg. The Roman theatre at Dalheim is a short drive away for the afternoon.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Mondorf Domaine Thermal and pick one that fits your day.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Mondorf spa?

As of September 2026, two hours cost €32 on weekdays and €35 at weekends and on bank holidays. Four hours are €45 or €48 and a full day €52 or €55, with €9 for each extra half hour.

Do I need to book Mondorf Domaine Thermal?

No. The thermal pool, saunas, steam rooms, gym and classes are all walk-in. You only book the private Vippi sauna and spa treatments.

Are the saunas at Mondorf nude?

Swimwear isn't allowed inside the sauna cabins, but you can keep a towel wrapped round you. The Tekstiili sauna requires a towel or sarong, swimwear is allowed in the steam rooms and compulsory in the pools, and there's a marked nude area outside.

Can children go to Mondorf spa?

Only to the thermal pool. You must be 16 for the saunas, steam rooms, jacuzzis, freshwater pool and gym. Children aged 2 to 15 get 60% off and babies go free.

Will my GHIC cover a thermal cure at Mondorf?

Mondorf's 21-day cures are covered for members of Luxembourg's national health fund with a prescription from a spa doctor. For everyone else the spa simply says to check with your own health insurer, so I wouldn't count on the GHIC paying.

How do I get to Mondorf-les-Bains spa from Luxembourg City?

Take bus 413 from the main railway station to the Casino 2000 stop, which takes about 30 minutes and is free. From the airport it's roughly 28 minutes by road, according to the spa.
