Diekirch town hall, a white mansion with slate dormers, street lamps and a modern grey extension

Diekirch had 2 hotel establishments and 2 campsites in 2025, according to STATEC, and Ettelbruck 1 hotel and 1 campsite. Not much, but well connected, as both Nordstad towns have stations on line 10 and a direct bus runs from Diekirch to Vianden. Next door, Bourscheid had 4 hotels and 5 campsites below its castle.

  • Diekirch had 2 hotels and Ettelbruck 1 in 2025, according to STATEC.
  • Both have stations on line 10; a direct bus runs from Diekirch to Vianden.
  • Bourscheid, by the country's largest castle, had 4 hotels and 5 campsites.
  • It's the north's most practical base without a car, if not the prettiest.

I'd stay in Diekirch to get around the north by public transport. You have trains to the capital and Clervaux, a direct bus to Vianden and two Battle of the Bulge museums on foot. It's not the prettiest place in the north, but it's the most practical.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Getting there

    A direct bus to Vianden

visitluxembourg says there are direct connections from Diekirch to Vianden and its castle, and to Luxembourg City. All free within the country.

    hotels in Vianden
  2. 02 My tip

The Lee Trail starts at the station

The first stage of the Escapardenne Lee Trail, 18 km to Bourscheid-Moulin, begins at Ettelbruck station. Stay there and you start walking as you step off the train.

    Ettelbruck
  3. 03 Most beautiful

The country's biggest castle, next door

Bourscheid, with Luxembourg's largest castle 150 metres above the Sûre, had 4 hotels and 5 campsites in 2025. Castle entry is €7.

    Bourscheid
  4. 04 To save money

Two war museums at €5 each

Diekirch's National Museum of Military History and Ettelbruck's General Patton Memorial Museum each charge €5 for adults. The first has nearly 50 vehicles and life-size dioramas.

What I would book

Diekirch and Ettelbruck aren’t the postcards of northern Luxembourg, but they’re its centre of gravity. Together they form the Nordstad, the growing urban area of the north, with railway stations, buses to almost everywhere and two national museums devoted to the Second World War. For anyone touring the north without a car, staying here makes a lot of sense. For anyone after charm, less so. For that, I keep a separate list of boutique hotels in Luxembourg.

Not much choice, but well placed

STATEC counted two hotel establishments in Diekirch in 2025 and one in Ettelbruck, which had two in 2024. Each town also had campsites, two in Diekirch and one in Ettelbruck, and visitluxembourg mentions holiday lets in Diekirch. The whole canton had nine hotels and fifteen campsites.

That’s very little for two towns with more than 17,000 residents between them. So I wouldn’t book at the last minute, and if Diekirch is full I’d widen the search to Bourscheid, with four hotels and five campsites, or Mersch, with two hotels, on the same line towards the capital.

Diekirch, the practical option

Diekirch has around 7,300 residents on the banks of the Sûre, according to visitluxembourg, and a pedestrian centre that was the first in the country. Its mascot is the donkey, which turns up in sculptures, on a fountain and even on top of St Lawrence’s church in place of the cockerel. The Diekirch beer is still brewed there.

For visitors, the museums are the draw. The Diekirch military museum, devoted to the Battle of the Bulge, has life-size dioramas and nearly 50 vehicles, and opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm, for €5. Close by are the Museum of (Hi)stories with a Roman mosaic, the historic vehicles collection and the brewery museum.

What matters most for a stay, though, is the links. Diekirch, visitluxembourg notes, has direct links both to Vianden and to Luxembourg City. Vianden has no railway, so this is the easiest way to its castle without a car.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Diekirch on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

Ettelbruck, the transport hub

Ettelbruck is, in visitluxembourg’s words, a major mobility hub for the north, about 20 minutes by car from the capital, with trains running right through the Éislek to Belgium and plenty of bus routes. Its station has 110 free parking spaces, a lift and a waiting room open from 5am to 9.30pm on weekdays.

It’s also General Patton’s town. His troops liberated it on 25 December 1944, and the General Patton Museum Ettelbruck opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, for €5. There’s also street art on the walls, the CAPE arts centre and the Foire Agricole, the country’s biggest agricultural show.

For walkers, the key fact is that the Escapardenne Lee Trail starts at the station, with an 18 km first stage to Bourscheid-Moulin.

Cyclists get a good deal too. The PC15 cycle path follows the Alzette out of town and on towards the Mullerthal, and the station has covered bike shelters and lockers. If street art is more your thing, the Ettelbruck City Tourist Office runs a Street Art Tour with Visit Éislek around the murals that have turned the town into one of the country’s street-art hotspots.

Bourscheid, to sleep below the castle

If you’d prefer somewhere greener, Bourscheid is the alternative. Its Bourscheid Castle is the largest in the country, 150 metres above the Sûre, with €7 entry and hours of 9.30am to 6pm in late September 2026. The commune, which includes Bourscheid-Plage on the river, had four hotels and five campsites in 2025, and it has railway stops at Michelau and Goebelsmuhle.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Diekirch on Expedia and filter by area before price.

Diekirch or Ettelbruck?

Judged purely on beds, they’re much the same, and there’s very little in either. I’d pick Diekirch for two reasons, the direct bus to Vianden and a pleasanter pedestrian centre for dinner. Ettelbruck wins if you’re walking the Lee Trail or arriving by train from the south and heading on into the Éislek, since lots of rail and bus lines meet there. Both towns have their own guides, Diekirch and Ettelbruck.

Line 10 works in October

On two October 2026 weekends, trains won’t run north of Ettelbruck. From the 10th to the 11th and the 17th to the 18th, mobiliteit.lu says buses take over as far as Wiltz, Kautenbach and Gouvy. Travelling from the Nordstad to Clervaux on those days, build in some slack. To compare with the north’s other rail-served base, see hotels in Clervaux.

One more warning for walkers. The International March of Diekirch brings civilian and military walkers to the town for two days every year, and with so few beds it’s worth booking the moment the date comes out.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Diekirch and pick one that fits your day.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.

If you still need a way in, check the best ticket deals to Luxembourg from where you are.
