White and yellow houses of the Grund reflected in the still water of the Alzette, with the upper town wall behind

Bretzelsonndeg, or Pretzel Sunday, is a Luxembourg celebration of love held on the fourth Sunday of Lent. A man gives his sweetheart a sweet puff-pastry pretzel with icing and almonds; she replies on Easter Sunday with an egg if she feels the same, or an empty basket if she doesn't. In leap years the roles are reversed.

  • Bretzelsonndeg, Pretzel Sunday, is Luxembourg's Lenten celebration of love.
  • It falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, the same Sunday as Mothering Sunday in the UK.
  • The person who gets the pretzel replies at Easter with an egg or an empty basket.
  • In leap years it's the women who give the pretzel.

If your trip lands on Pretzel Sunday, I'd buy one from a patisserie that morning and eat it myself rather than wait for an admirer. It's the treat of the season and the cheapest way into a custom that happens at home, not in the street.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    Shaped like two linked arms

Luxembourg's official portal says the pretzel's shape stands for the intertwined arms of two lovers. It started out savoury; these days almost everyone eats the sweet version.

  2. 02 My tip

    Get to the bakery early

According to luxembourg.public.lu, men rush to patisseries and bakeries that Sunday morning so they don't come away empty-handed. If you want to try one, don't leave it until the afternoon.

  3. 03 My tip

    A pastry worth knowing

It's yeasted puff pastry under sugar fondant and almonds, nothing like a German beer-hall pretzel. It sits alongside the country's other seasonal sweets, from carnival to Christmas.

    Luxembourg food

Luxembourg has a Sunday when a pastry does the talking, and the reply takes three weeks to arrive. It’s Bretzelsonndeg, Pretzel Sunday, and although it mostly happens in kitchens and bakeries rather than on the street, to me it ranks among the most charming dates in the country’s calendar.

The rules of the game

It works like this. On that Sunday a man gives the woman he loves a pretzel as a token of his feelings. If she feels the same, she gives him an egg on Easter Sunday. If she doesn’t, he gets an empty basket. That’s the origin of the Luxembourgish phrase «De Kuerf kréien», to get the basket, which is how locals say someone has been dumped.

The egg has moved with the times. Luxembourg’s official portal notes that it used to be a hen’s egg, whereas chocolate ones are now the favourite, sometimes filled with pralines from the country’s master patissiers.

The twist I like best comes every leap year. The custom flips, so the women give the pretzels and the men decide between egg and basket.

When does it fall?

On the fourth Sunday of Lent, which marks the halfway point. British readers will recognise the date, because it’s the same Sunday as Mothering Sunday back home. It moves with Easter, and the official portal warns that forgetting it can do real damage to your love life.

A word of caution on 2027. The capital’s tourist office lists Pretzel Sunday on 28 February 2027, but that doesn’t square with the fourth-Sunday rule in a year when the Easter Monday bank holiday is on 29 March. I wouldn’t plan a trip round that date until it’s confirmed, and I’d look again in January.

If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Luxemburgo for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.

Not the pretzel you’re thinking of

Forget the salty knot from a German beer hall. The Luxembourg version is a pastry of yeasted puff dough, covered in sugar fondant and almonds, and its shape is meant to be two lovers with their arms linked. The official portal says it began as a savoury bake and has since gone sweet.

That Sunday morning, the same source says, men pile into patisseries and bakeries so they don’t miss out. If you’re visiting, that’s your moment to try one. You’ll find it next to the other seasonal treats I cover in Luxembourg food.

Is there anything to see?

Honestly, not in the way a festival has. There’s no parade, no stage and no programme. It’s a couple and family custom, and what you’ll notice is the bustle at the bakery counters and shop windows stacked with pretzels. It isn’t a bank holiday either, so Sunday runs as normal, with shops working within the legal Sunday maximum.

So I wouldn’t fly out for it. I’d treat it as a bonus if you’re already in Luxembourg at the tail end of winter, whether you came into Findel or by train through Brussels or Paris. Buy one, find a café, and you’ve done Pretzel Sunday your way.

The rest of the year’s customs

Pretzel Sunday belongs to a run of traditions that Luxembourg still keeps. A few weeks earlier, on 2 February, children carry lanterns from house to house for Liichtmëssdag in Luxembourg. In June the Fête de la Musique in Luxembourg fills the streets with free concerts. And in December, before Christmas, Kleeschen, Luxembourg’s St Nicholas, hands out sweets to children. The full calendar, with dates, is in Luxembourg events.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Luxemburgo on GetYourGuide.

If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.

Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.

Frequently asked questions

What is Bretzelsonndeg in Luxembourg?

It's Pretzel Sunday, a celebration of love. A man gives a sweet pretzel to the woman he loves, and she answers at Easter, with an egg if it's mutual or an empty basket if it isn't.

When is Pretzel Sunday?

On the fourth Sunday of Lent, the same Sunday as Mothering Sunday in the UK. The capital's tourist office currently lists 28 February 2027, but that doesn't fit the rule, so I'd check again nearer the time.

What does «De Kuerf kréien» mean?

Literally ‘to get the basket’. It's the Luxembourgish way of saying you've been dumped, and it comes straight from this custom, since an unrequited admirer gets an empty basket instead of an Easter egg.

Is it different in a leap year?

Yes, it flips. Women give the pretzel, and men choose whether to reply with an egg or an empty basket.

What is a Luxembourg pretzel like?

A pastry of yeasted puff dough topped with sugar fondant and almonds, twisted to look like two linked arms. It began as a savoury bake; the sweet one is what you'll find now.

Is Pretzel Sunday a public holiday?

No. It's always a Sunday and isn't among Luxembourg's 11 legal holidays, so shops keep their normal Sunday hours.
