Rows of vineyards on the slopes at Wellenstein, on the Moselle, with green and yellow leaves after the harvest

Luxembourg's wine festivals fill the Moselle from May to October and finish in the capital in November. What's left of 2026 is Schengen's Hunnefeier on 18 October, which closes the harvest, and the Fête des Vins et Crémants in Luxembourg City from 27 to 29 November. The biggest in the country is Grevenmacher's, on the second weekend of September.

  • Wine festivals fill the Moselle from May to October and end in the capital in November.
  • The biggest is Grevenmacher's, on the second weekend of September, with the Wine Queen.
  • Still to come in 2026: Schengen's Hunnefeier (18-10) and the Fête des Vins et Crémants (27-29-11).
  • Whitsun's Wine Taste Enjoy is free, with shuttles between the villages.

If you can only make one, I'd pick Schengen's Hunnefeier. It's small, it has the new wine that's still fermenting and it marks the end of the harvest, when the valley looks its best. Grevenmacher's is bigger and louder, and you need to book a bed well ahead.

  3. 03 My tip

A drink that only exists in August

Stadtbredimus' Picadilly serves a sparkling mix of wine and blackcurrant which, according to the government portal, you'll only find at that festival.

  4. 04 Worth the splurge

    Crowning the Wine Queen

Grevenmacher opens its festival by crowning Luxembourg's Wine Queen, with a parade, concerts and fireworks. A week later Wormeldange crowns the Riesling Queen.

    Grevenmacher

On the Luxembourg Moselle they toast the wine nearly every fine weekend, and the charm is that each village does it its own way. There are festivals with marquees, parades and a coronation, narrow-street parties with open cellars, and one that ends with a clay cockerel as a prize. The government portal publishes the calendar every year, and with it you can plan a whole trip.

How the calendar works

The season starts at Whitsun with Wine Taste Enjoy, a weekend of open doors at wineries and distilleries all along the valley. There’s no set route, it’s free to join and free shuttles link the villages, so you decide how many stops you make. If cellar-hopping appeals, the Luxembourg Moselle wine route explains how to do it the rest of the year.

In summer every village has its date. In 2026 that meant Ehnen’s Éiner Wënzerdag in its old centre in July, the Welleschter Kiermes at Wellenstein, one of the most popular fairs in the country, and in August Schengen’s Pinotsfest, the Picadilly at Stadtbredimus, Remich’s Bacchusfescht and Machtum’s tasting day. September brings the big one.

Of the summer dates, the one I find most fun is the Picadilly, held over August’s second weekend, under the slogan “Don’t be silly, géi op de Picadilly”. It swaps quiet tastings for a proper party, with a bar of Luxembourg wines and crémants, concerts and an international food village, and it serves its own sparkling mix of wine and blackcurrant that you won’t find anywhere else.

Grevenmacher and the Riesling Open

The grape and wine festival at Grevenmacher, on the second weekend of September, is according to the official portal the biggest in the country and one of the oldest, having turned 75 in 2025. Proceedings begin as Luxembourg’s Wine Queen is crowned, who then parades with her princesses among bands from several countries and decorated floats, and there are fireworks. If you like a festival with crowds, this is the one.

A week later Wormeldange crowns the Riesling Queen and opens the Riesling Open, three days of open cellars in the villages of the commune. It’s calmer and more about tasting, and to me more rewarding if you want to understand Riesling from limestone slopes.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Remich on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

The Hunnefeier, end of the harvest

The festival I’d pick is the river’s last. The Hunnefeier takes place in Schengen village on the third weekend of October, which in 2026 means 18 October. It comes from an old custom. The grower who finished the harvest first won a live cockerel, and today the prize is the Schengener Hinnchen, a handmade clay piece for collectors.

There’s a flea market, a craft market and a vintage tractor show, but what I wouldn’t miss is Fiederwäissen, the new wine still fermenting that’s only poured in these weeks. The Schengen museum closes that Sunday, so if you want to see it, go on the Saturday.

And in the capital, the November finale

Once the villages have packed up, the wine moves to town. The Fête des Vins et Crémants takes place in Luxembourg City from 27 to 29 November 2026, and it’s the easiest way to try lots of producers in one afternoon without leaving the capital. It also overlaps with the start of the Christmas markets, which makes it a good excuse for a long weekend.

Out of season there’s less, but not nothing. On the Friday after Easter, Grevenmacher holds the Maacher Wäimoart, its new-vintage market, and in the first two months of the year Wine Cheese Enjoy matches crémant with fondue and raclette in cellars and restaurants. Wine Lights Enjoy, a night walk of about 5 km through illuminated vineyards from Wormeldange to Ahn, had no date published when I wrote this.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Remich on Expedia and filter by area before price.

My tips for festival weekends

Book your bed weeks in advance, because the Moselle has few hotels and they fill up on these weekends. Leave the car behind, since buses are free inside the country. And check the date on the organiser’s website before you travel, especially if you plan a year ahead, because rules like third weekend don’t always match what gets announced later. For a UK visitor, remember your wine allowance on the way home. The rest of the region is in the Luxembourg Moselle Valley guide.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Remich and pick one that fits your day.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.

If you still need a way in, check the best ticket deals to Luxembourg from where you are.

Frequently asked questions

When are the wine festivals in Luxembourg?

From May to October on the Moselle, most weekends, and in November in the capital. What remains of 2026 is Schengen's Hunnefeier on 18 October and the Fête des Vins et Crémants from 27 to 29 November.

What is the biggest wine festival in Luxembourg?

Grevenmacher's grape and wine festival, on the second weekend of September. It has a parade, concerts, fireworks and the crowning of the Wine Queen, and is one of the oldest in the country.

What is the Hunnefeier?

Schengen's cockerel festival, which closes the harvest on the third weekend of October. There's a flea market, a craft market, vintage tractors and Fiederwäissen, the new wine still fermenting.

What is Fiederwäissen?

The young autumn wine whose fermentation hasn't finished. It's drunk during the harvest weeks and is the thing to have at the Hunnefeier and on the Am Herscht walk.

Do you pay to get into the wine festivals?

Wine Taste Enjoy at Whitsun is free, and so are its shuttles. For the other festivals I haven't found an entry charge on the official sources; you pay for what you drink.

Is a wine festival weekend a good idea for a short break from the UK?

Yes, if you book early. Fly into Findel or come by train via Brussels or Paris, stay in Remich and use the free buses. Hotels on the Moselle are few and fill up on festival weekends.
