  • The Fête de la Musique fills the country with concerts from 11 to 21 June 2027.

If I could only go to Luxembourg once in summer, I'd go the week of 22 June. The eve of National Day is the liveliest night of the year in the capital and the heat hasn't really arrived. I'd just book the hotel months ahead.

What I would book

Luxembourg City has a reputation for being buttoned-up, and for one night a year it lets that go completely. On 22 June there are torches in the streets, a stage on every other corner and fireworks over the Pétrusse valley. June is the month of that party, but it’s also the month of the longest evenings and of music in the streets. This is how I’d plan the month.

Long evenings, afternoon storms

MeteoLux gives June an average of 16.7°C (62°F) at Findel with 241.2 hours of sunshine. The light is the big draw, since the evenings stretch out long enough for a walk in the morning and a terrace at night. The downside is thunderstorms, 8.6 on average, the highest count of any month, bringing 73 mm of rain. Fog, on the other hand, all but disappears, with just 1.3 days in the month.

Proper heat is rare, but it happens. The June record is 35.4°C, set on 22 June 2017, the eve of that year’s National Day. At the other end, the thermometer fell to 0.9°C on 1 June 1962. The full year is in Luxembourg weather.

Ten days of concerts

Between 11 and 21 June 2027, it’s the turn of the Fête de la Musique puts on concerts all over the country, according to the organisers. It’s a good excuse to wander without a fixed plan, and this is where free public transport pays off, because you can hop between towns by train or bus without thinking about fares. Luxembourg’s schools are back from their Whitsun break on 6 June, so the first half of the month feels calmer. On the third Sunday, as every month from March to November apart from August, the Glacis hosts the Glacismaart from 10:00 to 17:00, with flowers, fruit, local produce and clothes.

If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Luxembourg for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.

What happens on the night of 22 June?

The eve is the part I wouldn’t miss. Around 16:00 there’s a solemn changing of the guard outside the Grand Ducal Palace. In the evening the Fakelzuch, a torchlight procession, winds through the city, and later the fireworks go up from the Adolphe Bridge. All the while the streets turn into one big open-air party with concerts and DJs, and on the Champ du Glacis the city runs City Sounds. The food of the night is sausages, potato fritters and a Luxembourgish beer or glass of wine.

One practical point saves grief. On 22 June shops have to close by 18:00, so do any shopping before then.

The 23rd, ceremonies and a day off

Wednesday 23 June 2027 is the bank holiday and the day of the official side. The ceremony starts at 10:00, the military parade goes down Avenue de la Liberté at midday, 21 guns are fired from the Fetschenhof and in the afternoon there’s a Te Deum in the cathedral. The national anthem, Ons Heemecht, is never far away. For families, the city runs a games day for children on the Kinnekswiss in the municipal park.

The date has a story behind it. Grand Duchess Charlotte was born on 23 January, but January was no weather for a street party, so the celebrations moved to June. In 1961 the date was fixed as 23 June, and there it stays, even though Grand Duke Guillaume’s birthday is 11 November. The whole programme is laid out in Luxembourg National Day.

How I’d plan it

Three nights in the capital from the 21st to the 23rd, with the eve as the big night, and the rest of the week out in the country. With this much light the Mullerthal and the Sûre valley are at their best, and the approved lakes are already open for swimming. I’d book the hotel as soon as I had dates, because the eve brings thousands of people into the city. The palace tours are a separate matter, as it only opens in summer, and in 2026 that meant from 18 July.

From the UK, Findel is the easy way in, with the free tram to the centre, or you can take the train via Brussels or Paris. Remember you’re entering Schengen from outside, so check your passport was issued within the last ten years and stays valid for three months beyond your departure, and you’ll be registered on the EES at your first crossing. Your GHIC or EHIC covers necessary treatment, but I’d still travel with insurance.

If you’re coming earlier, May has its own festival calendar in Luxembourg in May. For the whole season, see Luxembourg in summer, and if you’re still weighing up dates, best time to visit Luxembourg. The next month, with the lakes and the school holidays, is in Luxembourg in July.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Luxembourg on GetYourGuide.

If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.

Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
