13.5°C average and 226 hours of sunshine
Luxembourg in May, a festival almost every weekend
Luxembourg in May averages 13.5°C at Findel with 226.3 hours of sunshine, though rain returns (73.3 mm) along with the first thunderstorms. - May averages 13.5°C at Findel with 226.3 hours of sunshine and the year's first thunderstorms.
- There are four bank holidays in May 2027, on the 1st, 6th, 9th and 17th, and shops shut by law on the 1st.
- The Octave ends on 2 May and the ING Night Marathon runs on Saturday 8 May 2027.
- On Whit Tuesday Echternach holds its dancing procession, on UNESCO's intangible heritage list.
For me May is Luxembourg's most rounded month, with decent weather, everything open and something different on every weekend. The catch is the bank holidays, so I'd book early and check opening days before planning each day out.

02 My tip
Shops are shut by law on 1 May
As on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, shops can't open on 1 May except bakeries, patisseries and a few food shops. On the other bank holidays they open on Sunday hours.

Open wineries and free shuttles
Over the Whitsun weekend the Moselle's wineries open up for Wine Taste Enjoy. Taking part is free and free shuttle buses link the wine villages, so nobody has to drive.

What I would book
May is the month when Luxembourg has something on nearly every weekend. In 2027 it opens with a bank holiday on a Saturday, then brings the end of the Octave, a marathon run at night, Ascension, Europe Day and Whitsun, and finishes with the schools breaking up. If you like a country with life on its streets, this is your month. If you’re after peace and quiet, pick your days carefully.
Summer light, spring storms
MeteoLux gives May an average of 13.5°C (56°F) at Findel and 226.3 hours of sunshine, nearly thirty more than April. The trade-off is rain, back up to 73.3 mm, and thunderstorms, which jump from two to more than six over the month. That’s why I’d start long walks in the morning and leave some slack in the afternoon in case a storm rolls in.
The extremes cover a wide range. Findel hit 31.6°C on 29 May 2017 and dropped to −2.1°C on 8 May 1957. To set May against the other months, see Luxembourg weather.
Four bank holidays in one month
May 2027 has four of Luxembourg’s eleven public holidays. Saturday 1 May is Labour Day, and along with 1 January and 25 December it’s one of three dates when shops must stay shut by law, except for bakers, cake shops and some food retailers. Thursday the 6th is Ascension, Sunday the 9th Europe Day and Monday the 17th Whit Monday. On those three, shops can trade on Sunday hours, until 19:00 at the latest, so I’d do any shopping midweek. Every holiday of the year is listed in Luxembourg public holidays.
Europe Day deserves a word of its own. It has been a bank holiday since 2019 and, according to the government portal, Luxembourg is the only country to give people the day off for it, which suits a founding member of the EU that hosts several of its institutions.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Luxembourg on Booking.com and filter by area before price.
Wreaths, woodruff wine and pilgrims
1 May has its own customs. Towns and villages hang up leafy wreaths, the Meekranz, and drink Maitrank, wine flavoured with woodruff, mostly in the west of the country and around Arlon, according to the official portal. At Neimënster, in the Grund, the unions and two associations hold the Fête du Travail et des Cultures.
The Octave of Our Lady closes on 2 May 2027, along with the final days of the Mäertchen, the fair that fills Place Guillaume II. And on Ascension Thursday Wiltz welcomes around 20,000 pilgrims, most of them from Luxembourg’s Portuguese community, to its Our Lady of Fátima pilgrimage, held there since 1968.
What happens at Whitsun?
Whitsun brings two of my favourite dates of the year. Over the weekend the Moselle’s wineries open their doors for Wine Taste Enjoy. It’s free to take part and free shuttles run between the villages, so you can taste wines and crémants without driving. For the wider wine calendar, go to Luxembourg wine festivals.
On the Tuesday, Echternach holds its dancing procession, inscribed by UNESCO in 2010. Rows of dancers linked by white handkerchiefs hop through the streets to the bands in honour of St Willibrord, the Northumbrian monk who founded the abbey. The parish hadn’t announced the 2027 date when I checked the sources on 30 September 2026, and I won’t work it out for you. As soon as the parish announces it, I’d book.

A marathon after dark
On Saturday 8 May 2027 the ING Night Marathon Luxembourg sets off from Kirchberg and Luxexpo for a route through the city centre. Even if you’re not running, it’s worth watching, since Visit Luxembourg describes it as a party for the whole city. That weekend I’d book a hotel in the capital earlier than usual. Distances, entry fees and the route are in my guide to the Luxembourg Marathon.
How I’d do it
A week in mid-May is my ideal trip. Three days in the capital, two in the Mullerthal and one on the Moselle, timed so the Whitsun weekend falls among the wineries. Flights land at Findel, and the free tram takes you into town, or you can come by train via Brussels or Paris. Coming from outside Schengen, your first entry includes the EES biometric registration, and your passport needs an issue date within the last decade and three months’ validity after you leave. From May the swimming season opens at the approved lakes, although at these temperatures I’d stay on the bank. I’d avoid the end of the month, as Luxembourg’s schools are off from 29 May to 6 June 2027.
The drier, quieter month before is in Luxembourg in April. For the whole season, see Luxembourg in spring, and to set it against the whole year, best time to visit Luxembourg. What comes next, with National Day, is in Luxembourg in June.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Luxembourg and pick one that fits your day.
Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
If you still need a way in, check the best ticket deals to Luxembourg from where you are.

Pleasantly mild, at 13.5°C (56°F) on average at Findel with 226.3 hours of sunshine. Rain comes back, 73.3 mm over the month, and there are around six thunderstorms, so a light waterproof is worth packing.

Four. Saturday 1 May (Labour Day), Thursday 6 May (Ascension), Sunday 9 May (Europe Day) and Monday 17 May (Whit Monday). Shops must stay shut on 1 May.
When is the Echternach dancing procession?
Every year on Whit Tuesday. By the end of September 2026 the parish hadn't announced the 2027 date, so I'd wait for that before booking a room.
When is the Luxembourg marathon in 2027?
The ING Night Marathon Luxembourg is on Saturday 8 May 2027, starting and finishing around Kirchberg and Luxexpo, according to the organisers.
Is Europe Day a holiday in Luxembourg?
