Municipality in the canton of Grevenmacher
Biwer, ten hamlets between the Syre and the Trier motorway
Biwer is a rural municipality of 1,902 people (1-1-2026) in the canton of Grevenmacher, with ten official localities including Wecker, Brouch and Hagelsdorf by the River Syre. It has a railway station at Wecker and a council-run indoor pool, and its website notes that direct ancestors of Robert Schuman, a founding father of the EU, came from here.
Biwer is a place to live rather than to visit, and I mean that kindly. With children on a wet afternoon the indoor pool is handy; otherwise I'd carry on to Manternach, where the ravine forest makes the trip worthwhile.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 My tip
Indoor pool, evenings only
Biwer's pool at 4 Schoulstrooss has a children's pool and, in the week of 30-09 to 06-10-2026, opened 17:30 to 20:30 Monday to Saturday, closed Sunday. The deep pool opens from 19:00.

02 Getting there
Free train to Wecker
The council gives Wecker station as its rail link. Second-class travel inside Luxembourg is free for everyone, so there's no ticket to buy.

03 Most beautiful
The ravine forest next door
A few kilometres away in Manternach lies the Manternacher Fiels reserve, the country's largest ravine forest at about 57 hectares.
Manternach
If you’re after sights, Biwer has fewer than almost anywhere else in the canton of Grevenmacher, and it’s better to know that before you turn off the motorway. It’s home to 1,902 people across ten official localities, set in small valleys running down to the River Syre. There’s no castle and no museum, but there is an odd bit of local history and a couple of practical things that can rescue an afternoon.
Ten hamlets, six sections
The national register counts ten localities, Biwer, Biwerbach, Boudler, Boudlerbach, Breinert, Brouch, Hagelsdorf, Wecker, Wecker-Gare and Weydig. The council groups them into six sections. The biggest is Biwer itself, 914 hectares along the Biwerbach at the foot of the Schoofsbierg and the Hierzebierg, and the smallest is Weydig at 151. Wecker, just below where the Biwerbach joins the Syre, sits on both banks.
Until 1995 the Wecker works operated here, remembered by the council as the pride of local industry. Small businesses on the Wecker-Gare estate have taken its place.
Robert Schuman’s family trail
The council website has a local history section, written in German, which sets out to tell, among other things, the story of Robert Schuman’s direct ancestors who lived in Biwer. The council describes him as a founding father of the European Union, and I rather like that his family trail leads to a municipality most people couldn’t place on a map. The same section covers vanished mills, lime kilns and quarries, and an old village school in Breinert.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Luxemburgo for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
Village stories from the council
What I enjoy about that section is that it goes village by village. It records the old name of Hagelsdorf, Hachelssdorff uf der Sieren, which already places it on the Syre; it tracks down a vanished mill on the Budlerbaach; and it tells the story of a house in Wecker that began as a moated castle, became a coaching inn and post stop, and is now a private home. There’s also a chapter on how the farming families here turned into modern farmers around the turn of the 20th century. It’s all in German, but a translation app copes well, and for a place without monuments to explain it, I can’t think of a better introduction.
What you can actually do
For a visitor, the practical draw is the indoor pool, with a children’s pool and one for non-swimmers, open in the evenings. On foot, the best idea is to follow the Syre on to Manternach, where the reserve I describe on the Manternach page begins.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Luxemburgo for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
Getting there
The municipality has a station at Wecker, and second-class trains in Luxembourg are free. By car, the Trier motorway runs right alongside. Neighbouring Betzdorf, to the west, makes a good partner for a morning in the Syre valley.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Luxemburgo on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
