Esch-sur-Sûre commune, the lake's water sports base
Lultzhausen, the water sports village on the Upper Sûre lake
Lultzhausen is a village in the Esch-sur-Sûre commune on the Upper Sûre lake and the hub for water sports. It has a beach with fixed barbecues, a youth hostel that hires out canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, a water sports centre, a diving zone open all year and a sculpture trail above the lake.

- Lultzhausen is the water sports village of the Upper Sûre lake.
- The youth hostel hires canoes, kayaks and SUPs in summer.
- Certified divers can dive in the bathing zone all year.
- The 1999 sculpture trail runs along the hillside above the lake.
Lultzhausen is the place on the lake to do more than lie on a towel. I'd book a canoe at the hostel in advance, paddle in the permitted area and finish with the sculpture trail, which is short and has the best views of the water.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 To save money
The cheapest bed by the water
Lultzhausen youth hostel has a beach and water sports right outside. For families, it's the most affordable way to sleep by the lake.

02 My tip
Book your canoe before you go
The hostel hires canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards in summer on request. Groups and families can book supervised sessions from April to October.
-
03 Most beautiful
Stone sculptures above the lake
The sculpture trail dates from 1999, when sculptors from several countries carved the stone on site. It's about 3 km along the hillside above the village, and easy.

04 Worth the splurge
Diving in an Ardennes lake
Certified divers can dive in the Lultzhausen bathing zone all year, with no registration. You're advised to check water quality first.
Upper Sûre lake
If Insenborn is the village for towels, Lultzhausen is the one for paddles. This village in the Esch-sur-Sûre commune sits right by the water of the Upper Sûre lake and gathers almost everything you can do on the water, and under it.
Canoes, kayaks and paddleboards
Lultzhausen youth hostel is right on the shore, with a beach and water sports facilities on its doorstep. Ask in summer and it will lend you a canoe, a kayak or a paddleboard, and between April and October its instructors lead outings aimed at school parties, families and other groups. The government portal also mentions a water sports centre in the village, where you can hire kit and take lessons.
Two things to know before you paddle off. Anything with an engine is banned on the lake. And in the drinking water protection zone, which runs about 5 km into the lake from the main dam, no water sports are allowed at all. What’s left is more than enough for a morning.
Freshwater diving
This one surprised me. If you’re a certified diver, the Lultzhausen bathing zone is open for diving all year round with no registration, and your contact is the water sports centre of the National Youth Service. You’re advised to check water quality before every dive, and, per the government portal, compressor stations are available to refill your tanks. For British divers used to inland quarries, a drowned Ardennes valley makes a change.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Esch-sur-Sûre for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
The beach and the floating bridge
The beach runs the length of the village shore and has fixed barbecues, although in 2026 the commune banned fires because of the drought. From it a floating bridge links Lultzhausen with Liefrange. Swimming is allowed in the monitored zone from 1 May to 30 September, between 7:00 and 23:00, and dogs aren’t allowed. The 2026 season ended on 30 September and the 2027 one starts on 1 May, so until then the beach is for walking, with no lifeguarded swimming. The free Kräizfeld car park is about 500 metres away.
A walk among sculptures
The Lultzhausen sculpture trail was created in 1999. Sculptors from several countries carved the stone on site, each piece designed for its spot on the hillside. The listing gives it as 2.92 km and easy, and to me it’s the best short walk on the lake, because between one sculpture and the next the water is always in the background.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Esch-sur-Sûre for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
Getting there
Lultzhausen has no station. At weekends and on bank holidays, buses 155 and 157 run round the lake, and in good weather the Plage-Bus shuttles between the Lultzhausen and Insenborn beaches and the car parks. By car, the free Kräizfeld car park acts as a reception car park about 500 metres from the beach, and Visit Éislek asks drivers to use only marked bays so emergency vehicles can get through.
Staying over
The hostel is the cheapest option by the lake, and it features alongside the others in youth hostels in Luxembourg. If you’d prefer a hotel, see the hotels in Esch-sur-Sûre.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Esch-sur-Sûre on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
