Nommern town hall, an ochre building with slate dormers, flags, clipped trees and flower beds

Nommern is a commune of 1,516 people on the western edge of the Mullerthal, with five localities including Cruchten and Schrondweiler. Its big draw is the Noumerleeën, a cluster of sandstone rocks that visitluxembourg calls a miniature of the whole region, with the Lock, a mushroom-shaped rock, and the remains of the Aalburg refuge.

  • Nommern is a commune of 1,516 people on the western edge of the Mullerthal, with five localities.
  • Its Noumerleeën rocks sum up the whole region's geology in a small area.
  • Highlights are the Lock, a mushroom-shaped rock, and the remains of the Aalburg refuge.

With young children who won't manage a full Trail route, the Noumerleeën is where I'd go. In about two hours you get narrow passages, oddly shaped rocks and an ancient refuge, then it's back to the campsite pool.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    The Mullerthal in miniature

visitluxembourg says the Noumerleeën packs almost every interesting geological feature of the region into a small area, from honeycomb weathering to narrow passages and half-caves.

  2. 02 My tip

    The short campsite circuit

Auto-Pédestre Nommern 1 starts at Camping Nommerlayen and loops through the Noumerleeën in about 5.5 km, easy but with tight squeezes and a few steps.

  3. 03 Getting there

    Along the Jhangli line

Circuit N2 follows the bed of the Jhangli, a narrow-gauge railway that ran from 1882 to 1948.

Nommern is a rural commune on the western edge of the Mullerthal that plenty of people only know for its campsite or pass through on the way to Larochette. It deserves better, because it holds one of the most complete rock landscapes in the region in a very small space, and it’s one of the best spots for families.

Five villages with deep roots

STATEC gives Nommern a population of 1,516 for January 2026. Its five official localities are Cruchten, Niederglabach, Nommern, Oberglabach and Schrondweiler. The regional tourist office credits it with Celtic origins, based on several archaeological finds, and praises the old oak and beech woods around it. It sits in the canton of Mersch and belongs to the Mullerthal tourist region.

Why call the Noumerleeën a miniature Mullerthal?

Because it squeezes nearly everything that makes the region special into a small patch of woodland. visitluxembourg lists layered sediments, weathering marks, honeycomb erosion that really does look like a beehive, narrow passages between rocks and half-caves. The rocks belong to the north-western escarpment of the Luxembourg sandstone, laid down in the Lias, which rises steeply above Keuper marl between 210 and 230 million years old.

Here you’ll find the Lock, a mushroom-shaped rock, and the Aalburg, a refuge built for protection against invaders, whose remains stand clearly on a promontory. visitluxembourg calls it a Roman refuge. There are also traces of old charcoal-burning sites. ExtraTour A of the Mullerthal Trail passes through, and trail L4 from Larochette crosses the same rocks. I think it’s the ideal place to get your eye in before committing to a long route, since it’s all within a short walk.

A short walk for families

Auto-Pédestre Nommern 1 starts at Camping Nommerlayen and takes about two hours. The route page rates it easy, though it has narrow sections and a few steps, and promises adventure for the whole family. The campsite has indoor and outdoor pools, so a morning on the rocks and an afternoon in the water plans itself. For something longer, circuit N2 follows the bed of the Jhangli, a narrow-gauge railway that ran from 1882 to 1948.

Buses and trains are free in Luxembourg, so a day here from the capital or Findel costs nothing in fares. In the village, visitluxembourg also lists the Miny distillery on rue Principale, making regional fruit brandies, liqueurs and gin.

Getting there and staying

Bus 232 runs from Mersch to Haller via Nommern, and buses are free across Luxembourg. In 2025 there were no hotels here in STATEC’s figures, just the campsite. Neighbouring Larochette has a youth hostel, and to the east lies Heffingen, home of the Loschbur man. To carry on through the White Ernz farmland, see the Vallée de l’Ernz.
