Schwebsingen, the harbour village of the Luxembourg Moselle

Schwebsingen (Schwebsange in French) is a winegrowing village in the commune of Schengen, on the Moselle. It has Luxembourg's only marina, the Schengen Marina, with 220 berths, a private Mediterranean garden of about 1,000 plant species open from May to September, and a signposted 4.95 km walk through the vineyards.

Schwebsingen isn't a day out, it's an hour done well. I'd walk the vineyard loop in the late afternoon and come down for a drink by the boats, which is the most unexpected view on this bank of the river.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    Masts against the vines

Schengen Marina is Luxembourg's only marina, with 220 berths for boats up to 20 metres. Yachts moored beneath vineyard slopes is a sight you won't get elsewhere in a landlocked country.

  2. 02 My tip

    The garden shuts in October

The Mediterranean garden opens from 1 May to 30 September. Outside those months, leave it off your plan.

  3. 03 Getting there

No station, so bus or bike

Schwebsingen has no railway station. Buses are free inside Luxembourg, or cycle along the riverbank from Remich or Schengen.

What I would book

Schwebsingen, or Schwebsange on the French signs, is the village on this bank that looks at the river differently. Its neighbours live off the vines, while here people moor boats. Along with eight other villages it belongs to the commune of Schengen, between Remerschen and Bech-Kleinmacher, and to my mind it deserves a short stop on any trip through the southern end of the valley.

Luxembourg’s one and only marina

The Schengen Marina is the only harbour for pleasure boats in Luxembourg. Since an extension in 1999 it has had 220 berths for craft up to 20 metres, 12 of them for visitors, and a campsite of around 30 pitches overlooking the pontoons. The season runs from April to the end of October, with the harbour office staffed mornings and afternoons (hours in the table), and it closes to passing boats over winter, when it’s used for storage because it copes with Moselle floods. Even without a boat, a stroll among the masts with vineyards behind is about as nautical as a landlocked country gets. Crews arriving in season must report to the harbour master with ID and the boat’s papers. The one-hour panoramic cruises from Remich sail past, with the marina and the nature reserve as highlights. For a trip on the water with a ticket, see Moselle river cruises.

A garden of a thousand plants

At 89 Route du Vin there’s a private Mediterranean garden that two collectors have tended for thirty years. It gathers about 1,000 species and varieties, mostly Mediterranean, subtropical and tropical plants that survive thanks to the mild wine-growing climate, so something is always in flower. You can only visit between May and September, so leave it out of an autumn or winter trip.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Remich before prices climb.

Up through the vines

The circular walk sets off from the church, follows the lane up into the vineyards and crosses the Kolteschberg, the Fëlskopp and the Fëlsberg before dropping back to the village. It’s 4.95 km and about an hour and 25 minutes, waymarked with a blue diamond on white. Schwebsingen is also one of the three villages on the crémant walk, with Wellenstein and Bech-Kleinmacher. It holds its own wine festival in early September, which in 2026 fell on the 6th.

What to drink at this end of the valley

Schwebsingen sits in the southern half of the Luxembourg Moselle, the stretch from Schengen to Greiveldange. The government portal describes it as an open valley of gentle slopes and clay soils, giving rounder wines than the limestone north. It’s a good place for crémant and softer whites rather than the sharper Riesling of Wormeldange. The village’s own wine festival is held at the Augustinshaus.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Remich before prices climb.

Getting there

Trains don’t stop here. Come by bus, which costs nothing within Luxembourg, or do as I would and pedal along the river from Remich or Schengen. Between March and October the Schengen tourist office rents standard bikes and e-bikes, and the ride to the marina is flat all the way. For a bed, Remich has more choice than any other village at this end of the valley.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Remich and choose by the reviews.
