Municipality in the canton of Grevenmacher
Betzdorf, from royal nursery to satellite headquarters
Betzdorf is a municipality of 4,127 people (1-1-2026) in the Syre valley, made up of Berg, Betzdorf, Mensdorf, Olingen and Roodt-sur-Syre. Its castle was the grand ducal family's home from 1953 to 1964, where all of Grand Duke Jean's children were born, Henri among them, and since 1986 it has been the headquarters of the satellite operator SES.
You can only see Betzdorf castle from the path, so don't come for that alone. Come for the loop from the station that skirts it, and for the short, steep climb up the Widdebierg from Mensdorf, which gives the best view in the municipality.

What I would keep in mind

01 Most beautiful
A castle with a royal family story
Grand Duke Jean and Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium moved in on their engagement in 1953, and all their children were born here. The family left for Colmar-Berg in 1964, the council says.

02 Getting there
Walks that start on the platform
The Betzdorf loop begins at the station and passes the castle; the Roodt-sur-Syre loop starts at that village's station. Second-class trains inside Luxembourg are free.

03 My tip
A free miniature railway
In Olingen the council runs the Millebunn, a miniature railway opened in 2025. From 1 May 2026 it runs on Saturdays from 13:00 to 17:00, weather permitting, and rides are free.

04 Most beautiful
The last wolf trail
The Wollefswee is a family trail of about six kilometres through the woods of Olingen, with panels, interactive stops and an audio story based on the local legend of the last wolf.
The name Betzdorf travels further than the place itself. The council admits as much, crediting SES Astra, the satellite company based here, with carrying it around the world. On the ground it’s a municipality of 4,127 people in five villages strung along a small river, the Syre, which links Mensdorf, Roodt-sur-Syre, Olingen and Betzdorf, with the town hall in Berg above the valley floor.
Where Grand Duke Jean raised his family
The present Betzdorf castle was built in 1912 and passed to the state in 1953. On 9 April that year, on their engagement, Grand Duke Jean and Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium moved in, and all their children were born there, including Henri, Grand Duke from 2000 to 2025. The family moved to Colmar-Berg on 18 November 1964. The castle then became a care home, hosted an international camp of 3,000 scouts in 1982 and in 1986 became the headquarters of the Société Européenne des Satellites.
It isn’t open to visitors, but the loop from Betzdorf station runs through the Junkerbësch woods and right past it, satellite antennas in full view. The wider royal story is on my page about the Grand Duke of Luxembourg.
Older than it looks
The council traces Betzdorf back to Bettinsdorf in 1321. It was a cantonal capital from 1795 to 1831 and the seat of a deanery from 1808 to 1967. Its first church dates from 1140 and the present Baroque one from 1748, with carved tombs of the feudal lords inside. The old castle, held over the centuries by families such as the de Bertrange, de Lellig, de Berbourg and Mohr de Waldt, now sits within the Institut Saint-Joseph.

The walks I’d pick
My choice is Mensdorf. The loop is only 4.49 km, but the climb up the Widdebierg is a proper effort and the reward is the best view in the municipality. The council notes that in Gallo-Roman times this hill was worshipped as a Celtic deity, and that the Roman road from Metz to Trier met the Reims to Trier road nearby.
The Roodt-sur-Syre loop starts at its station, crosses three woods and an old Roman road and passes St James’s church, first recorded in 1083, and a plaque to the last wolf shot in Luxembourg, in 1892. That tale inspires the Wollefswee, a family trail of about six kilometres through the Olingen woods, with panels and an audio story to listen to as you go.
With children
Besides the Wollefswee, Olingen has the Millebunn, a council-run miniature railway opened on 7 June 2025. From 1 May 2026 it runs on Saturdays from 13:00 to 17:00, weather permitting, free for everyone.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Luxemburgo on Expedia and filter by area before price.
Getting there and nearby
Betzdorf and Roodt-sur-Syre both have stations, and second-class travel is free inside the country, as I explain in trains in Luxembourg. To the east lie Biwer and, a little further, the ravine forest of Manternach. To the south, the Widdebierg is shared with Flaxweiler.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Luxemburgo and pick one that fits your day.
Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
If you still need a way in, check the best ticket deals to Luxembourg from where you are.
