From 137 to 226 hours of sunshine a month
Luxembourg in spring, when the country opens up again
In spring Luxembourg goes from a 5.7°C average in March to 13.5°C in May, and sunshine nearly doubles, from 137 to 226 hours a month. It's the season of reopenings (Echternach's Roman villa, the Vianden chairlift, the swimming lakes) and of three big dates, Éimaischen on 29 March 2027, the Octave in April and the dancing procession on Whit Tuesday.

- In spring Findel's average rises from 5.7°C in March to 13.5°C in May.
- April is the driest month of the year, with 49.4 mm.
- Éimaischen is on 29 March 2027 and the Octave runs from 17 April to 2 May.
- Echternach's dancing procession is on Whit Tuesday; May 2027 has four bank holidays.
My kind of spring in Luxembourg runs from late April through May. March still feels wintry with plenty not yet open, but from April the valleys turn green, it rains less than in any other month and the calendar fills up. The one thing I'd watch is May's run of bank holidays.

Éimaischen and its clay whistles
On Easter Monday, 29 March 2027, the old town fills with pottery stalls and Péckvillercher, bird-shaped clay whistles sold only on that day and different every year.

02 My tip
April, the driest month
At 49.4 mm on average at Findel, April is the driest month of the year, with sunshine already past 197 hours. For walking, it's my favourite.

1 May, Ascension (6th), Europe Day (9th) and Whit Monday (17th). On the 1st shops are shut by law; on the others they keep Sunday hours.
Luxembourg public holidays
What I would book
Spring is when Luxembourg reopens. Between March and May castles, seasonal museums and the chairlift come back, the lakes open for swimming, and the calendar fills with festivals you won’t see the rest of the year. Here’s how the country changes month by month and when I’d go.
Weather that changes by the week
Findel’s averages show a steep climb. March sits at 5.7°C, April at 9.6°C and May at 13.5°C, while sunshine rises from 137 to 226 hours. April is also the driest month of the year at 49.4 mm, whereas May goes back up to 73 mm and brings the first thunderstorms, 6.2 on average. Luxembourg City’s tourist board describes it as a beautiful but slightly unpredictable season, with flowers across the centre and in the parks, and an umbrella never far away.
The extremes show that anything can happen. In March Findel has hit 23.5°C (2021) and −14.4°C (1971), and in May 31.6°C (2017). I’d pack a waterproof jacket and a warm layer until well into April.
March, Easter and Éimaischen
Easter comes early in 2027. Easter Monday, a bank holiday, falls on 29 March, and that day the old town holds Éimaischen, a craft and pottery market recorded since at least 1827 and best known for Péckvillercher, clay birds that whistle like a cuckoo and are sold nowhere else. Nospelt, west of the capital, has its own. Luxembourg’s schools break up for Easter between 27 March and 11 April 2027.
Before that, on the fourth Sunday of Lent, comes Bretzelsonndeg, when a man gives a pretzel to the woman he loves; she answers at Easter with an egg or, if she’s not interested, an empty basket, and in leap years the roles swap. Easter itself brings the Klibberen, youngsters with wooden rattles who stand in for church bells from Maundy Thursday, and in Vianden the Jaudes bonfire on Good Friday. March is also when places start reopening. Echternach’s Roman villa is back from 27 March 2027, free to enter. Everything for the month is in Luxembourg in March.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Echternach for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
April, the Octave and the reopenings
April is my favourite month for walking. It barely rains, the Mullerthal and Ardennes valleys are green and July’s heat is still a long way off. In 2026 Grevenmacher’s butterfly house opened on 1 April and the chairlift at Vianden on the 4th (neither has published its 2027 season yet), and from the 1st Move We Carry starts shifting luggage between accommodation for walkers on multi-stage routes.
The Octave of Our Lady of Luxembourg opens on 17 April 2027, a pilgrimage the city has held since 1666. It lasts 16 days, until 2 May, with the statue of the Virgin in the cathedral and the Mäertchen, a market with stalls and fairground rides, on Place Guillaume II. Everything else April brings is covered in Luxembourg in April.
May, bank holidays, a marathon and Whitsun
May 2027 has four bank holidays. On 1 May shops are shut by law, and the country marks it with leafy wreaths (Meekranz) and a glass of Maitrank, wine flavoured with woodruff. Then come Ascension (Thursday 6th), Europe Day (Sunday 9th) and Whit Monday (the 17th). The ING Night Marathon, which starts from Kirchberg, is set for 8 May 2027, a Saturday evening.
Whit Tuesday is the day of Echternach’s dancing procession, inscribed by UNESCO in 2010, with around 8,000 dancers following the bands. As of 30 September 2026 nobody had announced the day for 2027. Over the Whitsun weekend the Moselle’s wineries throw their doors open for Wine Taste Enjoy, free to join, with shuttles between villages. And from 1 May the swimming season begins at the approved lakes.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Echternach for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
When I’d go
From mid-April to the end of May. You get light, mild weather and nearly everything open, and with the right dates you can add the Octave, the marathon or the procession. I’d just book early around the May bank holidays and, if I could, avoid Luxembourg’s Easter (27 March to 11 April 2027) and Whitsun (29 May to 6 June 2027) school breaks. Travelling from the UK, make sure your passport was issued in the last ten years and runs for at least three months past your exit from Schengen, and leave time for EES fingerprints and a photo at your first border. May, with its full calendar, is in Luxembourg in May.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Echternach on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.

Péckvillercher whistles are only sold at Éimaischen.
See the answer
True. The capital's tourist office says these bird-shaped clay whistles are sold exclusively at that market and change every year.

Frequently asked questions
What is the weather like in Luxembourg in spring?
Changeable and brightening fast. Findel's average climbs from 5.7°C (42°F) in March to 13.5°C (56°F) in May, and the capital's tourist office suggests packing an umbrella because the weather turns quickly. April is the driest month of the year.
What's on in Luxembourg in spring?
Éimaischen on Easter Monday, the Octave at the cathedral (17 April to 2 May 2027), Echternach's dancing procession on Whit Tuesday and walks through a green Mullerthal. From 1 May, swimming at the approved lakes.
Is Luxembourg busy at Easter?
Easter Monday is 29 March 2027 and Luxembourg's Easter school holidays run from 27 March to 11 April 2027. Éimaischen draws collectors to the old town at dawn, so I'd get there early if you want a whistle.
When is the Echternach dancing procession?
Every year on Whit Tuesday. At the end of September 2026 the 2027 date hadn't been published. Around 8,000 dancers take part, and it has been on UNESCO's intangible heritage list since 2010.
When does the Vianden chairlift open?
In 2026 it opened on 4 April and runs until 19 October. The 2027 season hadn't been announced at the end of September 2026.
Is spring a good time to visit Luxembourg?
Yes, especially from mid-April to the end of May. There's plenty of light (197 to 226 hours of sunshine a month), mild temperatures and nearly everything open. Just book early around the May bank holidays.
