Commune in the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette, Minett region

Bettembourg, the railway town every child knows

Bettembourg is a commune of 11,651 people in the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette, 10 km from Luxembourg City and 5 km from the French border. It's the south's railway junction, where lines to Esch-sur-Alzette, Dudelange and Thionville meet, and home to the Parc Merveilleux, the country's best-known fairy-tale park and zoo.

  • Bettembourg is a commune of 11,651 people, 10 km from Luxembourg City.
  • Its big attraction is the Parc Merveilleux, a fairy-tale park and zoo.
  • It's the south's railway junction, with trains to Esch, Dudelange, Thionville and Metz.
  • One of the two branches of the Minett Trail ends here.

With children, Bettembourg means the Parc Merveilleux, and that alone makes the trip worthwhile. Without them, I'd treat it as what it mostly is, a railway junction, and fit in a walk through the Beetebuerger Bësch before heading on to Dudelange or the Minett Trail.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    The Parc Merveilleux

Animated fairy tales, nearly 200 animal species, tropical houses and nine play areas across 25 hectares. The commune calls it the country's only fairy-tale leisure park.

  2. 02 Getting there

    The south's rail junction

Bettembourg sits on the line from Luxembourg City to Esch-sur-Alzette and Rodange and on the line to Thionville and Metz, and the branch to Dudelange and Volmerange-les-Mines starts here. Second class is free within Luxembourg.

  3. 03 My tip

A trail that follows a giant

The interactive walk «De Ris geet op d'Rees» follows the Parc Merveilleux giant through the town. The short version is 6.3 km, takes about an hour and a half and is easy going.

Bettembourg’s tourism page opens with a question that has an easy answer in Luxembourg. Which child in the Grand Duchy hasn’t been to the Parc Merveilleux? That park is what made this commune in the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette famous, a place of 11,651 people 10 km from the capital and 5 km from France. But there’s a second Bettembourg, the railway one, and for anyone getting about by train it matters just as much.

Every train in the south comes through

Look at the CFL network map and it’s obvious. Two main lines cross here, the one running south from the capital towards Esch-sur-Alzette and Rodange and the one heading for Thionville and Metz, and the branch to Dudelange and Volmerange-les-Mines starts here. In Noertzange, one of the commune’s own villages, the branch to Kayl, Tétange and Rumelange begins as well. The history of Frisange records that the post house and gendarmerie moved to Bettembourg in 1859, when the Luxembourg to Bettembourg to Thionville railway opened.

The station has ticket machines taking cards and cash, though in second class you won’t need a ticket inside the country. Continuing into France, you do pay for the cross-border section.

The Parc Merveilleux

This is why most people come. The Parc Merveilleux, on the route de Mondorf, packs a fairy-tale forest, nearly 200 animal species from five continents, tropical houses, a mini train, a pony express and nine play areas into 25 hectares. The commune calls it the country’s only fairy-tale leisure park, and the park itself says it’s Luxembourg’s only zoo. It has its own page with prices and opening times.

What else is there in Bettembourg?

Protected woodland and a walk with a giant. The Beetebuerger Bësch nature reserve, between Leudelange and Bettembourg, is beech forest with streams, pools and the Léiffraeweier pond, and visitluxembourg mentions rare woodpeckers and bats that show themselves at dusk. The interactive trail «De Ris geet op d’Rees» follows the giant who lies beside the Parc Merveilleux playground and, in the story, wakes up and sets off round the town, over 6.3 easy kilometres.

What I like most about the Beetebuerger Bësch is the way in. visitluxembourg lists three trails through it, the Abweiler autopédestre, the reserve’s own nature trail and route 20 of the CFL station-to-station walks, the one linking Luxembourg City with Bettembourg. In other words, you can set off on foot from the capital, cross the beech wood and finish on the platform at Bettembourg for a free train back. However you arrive, the reserve itself is on rue d’Abweiler.

In the centre stands Bettembourg Castle, whose function hall the commune uses for events, and its park. No official source I’ve read lists visiting hours for the interior, so I’d simply take it in on a walk round the centre.

A bit of history

The commune’s local history society has published chapters on the Ghost Army and “Operation Bettemburg”, the bombing of 11 May 1944, General James Hilliard Polk, who liberated the town, and the cyclist Charly Gaul. They’re good leads if you’re following Luxembourg’s Second World War.

Walking and staying

Bettembourg is one of the two end points of the Minett Trail, which arrives from Bergem, in the commune of Mondercange, in 12.01 km. Right in front of the Parc Merveilleux, in an entrance built like a castle gate, is the trail’s hikers’ lodge. As for hotels, STATEC counted one in the commune in 2025. With free trains, I’d stay in Luxembourg City.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Luxemburgo and choose by the reviews.

A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.

So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.
