15 monitored bathing zones in four lakes

Wild swimming in Luxembourg, the four lakes with official bathing areas

Luxembourg has only four official outdoor swimming spots, all lakes: the Upper Sûre, Echternach, Weiswampach and Remerschen, with 15 monitored zones between them. The season runs from 1 May to 30 September. No river is a designated bathing water, and the 2026 season ended on 30 September.

  • Luxembourg has 15 official bathing zones, all in four lakes.
  • The season runs from 1 May to 30 September.
  • No river is a designated bathing water.
  • Cyanobacteria can close a beach even when the water is excellent.

For me the Upper Sûre wins on scenery and space, and Echternach on convenience, since it's free and right by the town. Remerschen is the best equipped for families and dogs. Wherever you go, I'd check the official bathing website that morning, because the cyanobacteria situation changes through the season.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 My tip

Check the official status before you leave

The Water Management Authority publishes which zones are open and which aren't. A cyanobacteria bloom can close a beach even when its water is rated excellent.

  2. 02 To save money

Echternach, free from 7am to 10pm

The Adventure Island bathing area on Echternach lake is free to use from 7:00 to 22:00 every day of the season. At Remerschen, by contrast, you pay to get in.

  3. 03 Watch out

    A river ‘beach’ isn't a bathing area

Luxembourg designates no river as bathing water, because of currents, boat traffic and variable quality. Wherever you see people swimming in the Sûre or the Moselle, nobody is officially monitoring it.

  4. 04 Most beautiful

    The country's largest lake

The Upper Sûre Lake has six monitored areas spread around its shores, with lawns, woodland and the Burfelt viewpoint 70 metres above the water.

  5. 05 My tip

Better for paddling than for swimming

Out of season, or when a zone is closed, the water is still there. At the Upper Sûre you can hire canoes, kayaks and paddleboards at Lultzhausen, always outside the protected zone and without engines.

  6. 06 My tip

With a dog, go to Remerschen

Remerschen has a beach set aside for dogs. At the Upper Sûre, by contrast, they're banned from five of the bathing lawns.

My ranking, scored

The four lakes, best to least good for a swim

My score out of 10 for a summer swim, weighing scenery, space, ease of access, facilities and price. It's my opinion with the official data in front of me, not a water quality ranking.

  1. Upper Sûre Lake

The biggest and the most beautiful, with six monitored areas, paddling at Lultzhausen and the Burfelt viewpoint. It loses a little for cyanobacteria and the paid car parks by the water.

    9.1 out of 10

  2. Echternach lake

Free, right by the town and with a bathing area open 7:00-22:00. It covers 30 hectares, with pedalos, woodland all around and the Roman villa next door. Its water was rated ‘good’, not ‘excellent’.

    8.2 out of 10

  3. Remerschen lakes

The best equipped, with wheelchair access, a dog beach, paddleboards and a café. In exchange you pay to get in and numbers are capped at 3,000.

    7.9 out of 10

  4. Weiswampach lakes

Two 6-hectare lakes in the far north, with a pirate playground and trails through the Conzefenn reserve. Good for a family afternoon if you're already up north.

    7.6 out of 10

Luxembourg has no coastline, but it has lakes, and in summer people swim in them. What hardly anyone mentions is how tightly it’s all defined. The Water Management Authority designates and monitors bathing sites every year, and the list is short. There are 15 zones across four lakes, and outside them there’s no official swimming. If you’re used to the UK, where people swim in rivers and the sea, this is a real difference. Here are the four, in my order, with what to know before you get in.

When and where, by the rules

Swimming in public lakes and ponds is allowed from 1 May to 30 September. The official list for the 2026 season included four zones on Weiswampach lake, six on the Upper Sûre, four at the Remerschen ponds and one on Echternach lake. Apart from Echternach, rated ‘good’, every zone scored ‘excellent’ in the 2025 assessment. The 2026 season finished on 30 September, and swimming resumes on 1 May 2027.

One point I think matters. The authority monitors water quality but makes clear it isn’t responsible for safety, such as lifeguards, or for how bathers behave. Quality is worked out from samples over the last four seasons, measuring two faecal bacteria, E. coli and intestinal enterococci, and each site is graded excellent, good, sufficient or poor. On the official website every zone has its own profile and a traffic light that turns red when swimming is banned. I’d bookmark that page on your phone before the trip.

Why rivers are off the list

It’s a fair question in a country crossed by the Sûre, the Our and the Moselle. The official answer is that no river is a designated bathing water. Currents and boats are a hazard, and bacterial quality swings too much, because of treatment plant outflows, run-off from fertilised fields after rain and sediment being churned up. The authority cites the Seine at the 2024 Olympics as an example. So a river ‘beach’ such as Bourscheid-Plage is something else, with no official bathing monitoring.

Cyanobacteria, every summer’s problem

They’re bacteria that multiply in still, phosphorus-rich water in strong sun, mostly in summer and autumn. Some produce toxins that can cause anything from skin irritation and nausea to liver damage, which is why a zone can close even when its water is excellent. The Upper Sûre, Remerschen and Weiswampach are most at risk, and Echternach is under threat too. You can spot a bloom because the water changes colour, as if someone had tipped in blue-green paint. If you see ban signs, respect them, and keep dogs out of the water.

My ranking of the four

The Upper Sûre Lake is the big one, with six monitored lawns, paddling at Lultzhausen and views from the Burfelt. Echternach lake, at 30 hectares, is the easiest, since the Adventure Island area is free from 7:00 to 22:00 and sits at the entrance to the town. The Remerschen lakes, the Baggerweieren, cover 25 hectares beside the Haff Réimech nature reserve, charge for entry, cap numbers at 3,000 and are the best equipped, with wheelchair access and a dog beach. The two Weiswampach lakes, 6 hectares each, have a large pirate playground.

The practical bits for each

At Echternach there’s free parking at the entrance, a path round the lake for walking, skating or cycling, pedalos, fishing with a permit and 375 hectares of woodland around it; in summer, trampolines and an adventure playground are added. At Remerschen you pay on site by cash or card, or online in advance, and you can hire paddleboards and rowing boats; barbecues are allowed on a four-legged grill. At Weiswampach, the Conzefenn nature trail heads into the reserve of the same name. Remerschen is the only one visitluxembourg lists with changing rooms and a shower, as part of its accessible facilities.

With kids, a dog or a paddle

With children I’d head for Echternach or Remerschen. With a dog, Remerschen is the only one with its own dog beach, while at the Upper Sûre dogs are banned on five lawns. For paddling, visitluxembourg points to the Upper Sûre Lake and the Moselle. If it’s raining or winter, you want the swimming pools in Luxembourg.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Esch-sur-Sûre on GetYourGuide.

If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.

Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.

True or false?

0/3 Pick before you peek.

  1. Luxembourg has rivers with official bathing areas.

    See the answer

False. None. All 15 designated zones are in lakes. The authority explains that river water quality fluctuates too much, especially after heavy rain.

  2. If a beach's water is rated excellent, you can always swim there.

    See the answer

False. The rating measures faecal bacteria. A cyanobacteria bloom can still ban swimming, as at the Upper Sûre's Rommwiss in September 2026.

  3. Swimming at Echternach lake is free.

    See the answer

True. The Adventure Island area by the youth hostel is free from 7:00 to 22:00 every day from 1 May to 30 September.

Frequently asked questions

Where can you swim in Luxembourg?

In the 15 monitored zones of four lakes: the Upper Sûre, Echternach, Weiswampach and Remerschen. They're the only outdoor places officially designated for swimming.

When is the swimming season in Luxembourg?

From 1 May to 30 September in public lakes and ponds. In 2026 it ended on 30 September, and the next season starts on 1 May 2027.

Can you swim in Luxembourg's rivers?

No river is a designated bathing water. The Water Management Authority explains that currents, boats and bacterial quality that swings widely, especially after rain, rule it out.

Are there lifeguards at Luxembourg's lakes?

The Water Management Authority monitors water quality but states that it isn't responsible for safety, such as lifeguard cover, or for bathers' behaviour.

What are cyanobacteria and why do they close beaches?

They're bacteria that thrive in still, nutrient-rich, sunny water, mainly in summer and autumn. Some produce toxins, so swimming is banned even when water quality is excellent. The Upper Sûre, Remerschen and Weiswampach are the most exposed.

Which Luxembourg lake is best with children?

For me, Echternach, because it's free and has an adventure playground and summer trampolines; and Remerschen, for its facilities and access. Weiswampach has a large pirate playground.
