The biggest saving on a bed in Luxembourg is location, not category. Public transport has been free nationwide since 1 March 2020, so a hotel in Esch-sur-Alzette or Ettelbruck with a station gets you into the capital without a fare or the 3% tax Luxembourg City charges. If all you need is a bed, the city's youth hostel starts at €34 with breakfast.

  • Public transport is free throughout Luxembourg, so staying outside the capital adds no fares.
  • The 3% tourist tax is charged by Luxembourg City under its own tax rules.
  • Esch-sur-Alzette, Ettelbruck, Diekirch and Clervaux have both hotels and a station.
  • The cheapest youth hostel bed is €30 with a card and breakfast, as of September 2026.

I wouldn't hunt for a cheap hotel inside the capital. I'd book a decent one next to a station elsewhere, in Esch-sur-Alzette, Ettelbruck or Clervaux, and ride the free train in each day. You skip the city tax and sleep somewhere quieter.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 To save money

The 3% tax belongs to the capital

The tax rules I've read are Luxembourg City's own, adding 3% of the pre-VAT room price. Stay in another commune with a station and it drops off the bill, while the train into town stays free.

  2. 02 My tip

    Hostels aren't just for backpackers

The national youth hostel network has no age limit, includes breakfast and bed linen and offers twin rooms for a €10 supplement. The city one sits below the Bock promontory.

  3. 03 Getting there

Pick the station before the photo

Clervaux, Ettelbruck, Diekirch and Esch-sur-Alzette are on the railway; Vianden, Echternach and Mondorf aren't. Without a car, that matters more than a few pounds off the first night.

    Prices shown without tax

Always compare the total including VAT and, in the capital, the city tax. A rate that looks cheap on a comparison site can look rather different at the payment screen.

    is Luxembourg expensive

What I would book

One thing first. No official Luxembourg website publishes room rates or ranks the cheapest places to stay, and inventing a list isn’t my style. What does exist are three public facts that decide what you pay for a bed, and hardly anyone puts them together. With them, you can hunt for value with some method.

The trains are free, so use them

Nobody has paid to ride a bus, tram or second-class train inside Luxembourg since 1 March 2020, visitors included. It sounds like a transport fact, but it’s the best money-saving argument for accommodation. A hotel well outside the capital no longer means spending on tickets, only checking the timetable.

That’s why my first filter isn’t price, it’s the station. Esch-sur-Alzette, Ettelbruck, Diekirch and Clervaux have trains and hotels; Vianden, Echternach and Mondorf-les-Bains have no station and rely on buses. For the south, start with hotels in Esch-sur-Alzette. For the north, Ettelbruck and Diekirch sit at the junction of the line up into the Ardennes.

Why does leaving the capital cut the bill?

Under its own municipal rules, the capital adds 3% to what you pay for the room before VAT, and the hotel collects it. The text I have is from 2021; whether it still stands in 2026 I couldn’t check, so take it as a pointer. It’s a charge of the capital, not of the country, and the city held 57 of the 182 hotel establishments STATEC counted in 2025.

Put simply, every €100 of room in the capital carries €3 of tax on top of VAT. It’s hardly a deal-breaker, but it’s added every night, and over a longer stay it pays for dinner. Bear in mind too that the tax is worked out on the room price itself, so the more expensive the room, the more you hand over.

If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Esch-sur-Alzette for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.

When a bed and a shower will do

Here I can give you prices, because the national youth hostel network publishes them. As of September 2026, the city hostel charges €38 per person per night without a card in a room with shared bathroom, and €34 with a Hostelling International card, breakfast and bed linen included. The lowest price in the network, €30 with a card, is at Vianden, Larochette and Lultzhausen.

Don’t picture a forty-bunk dormitory, and don’t assume it’s a young person’s thing either. There’s no upper age limit, and I think that’s the most overlooked fact about budget beds in Luxembourg. According to the network, many-bed rooms are largely a thing of the past, each family sleeps separately and a twin costs €10 more per person. What you won’t find is a guest kitchen, so meals come from the hostel restaurant or your own pocket. The full picture is in youth hostels in Luxembourg.

Dates matter too

STATEC puts the average hotel stay at 2.16 nights in 2025, and the capital and its surroundings take the lion’s share of arrivals. It’s a city of business and EU institutions, and midweek demand shows it. I have no official data on prices by day of the week, but I do know which dates fill the city. The big events with published dates, like National Day on 23 June or the Schueberfouer funfair in late August, are weeks when I wouldn’t expect a bargain in the capital.

My three ways to spend less

Travelling without a car and keen on the capital, I’d sleep in Esch-sur-Alzette and commute in by train. For castles and countryside, Ettelbruck or Clervaux, with line 10 on the doorstep. And travelling solo or as a couple and happy to share a corridor, the city hostel in the Pfaffenthal, right where the UNESCO-listed zone ends.

The fourth option, for those who enjoy it, is a tent. The Mullerthal and the Ardennes have far more camping than hotel capacity; I cover it in camping in Luxembourg.

Where the savings leak away

Two mistakes crop up again and again. The first is staying across the border to save money without counting that free travel ends at the frontier and the foreign leg is paid. The second is picking a cheap hotel miles from any stop and spending the saving on city-centre parking, charged at €0.50 to €2 for every hour.

For the full budget and not only the room, check whether Luxembourg is expensive and the tips in Luxembourg on a budget. And to choose an area without thinking about price, go back to where to stay in Luxembourg.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Esch-sur-Alzette on GetYourGuide.

If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.

Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I stay cheaply in Luxembourg?

Outside the capital and close to a station, because trains are free and you avoid the city's tourist tax. Esch-sur-Alzette, Ettelbruck, Diekirch and Clervaux tick both boxes. If you just need a bed, the city youth hostel starts at €34 with breakfast.

How much is a budget hotel in Luxembourg?

No official source publishes hotel prices, so I won't make one up. The lowest official benchmark is the youth hostel network, €30 to €40 per person per night with breakfast depending on the hostel and on holding a card, as of September 2026.

Is it cheaper to stay outside Luxembourg City?

On tax, yes. The city's tax rules add 3% of the pre-VAT price, and that is a municipal charge of the capital. Trains and buses back into town are free across the country.

Do I need a membership card for a Luxembourg youth hostel?

They ask for a Hostelling International card. If you don't have one and don't live in Luxembourg, you buy a €4 per person per night pass at the hostel that makes you a member for that night. UK residents can also buy the card through their own national association.

Should I stay in Trier or Arlon to save money?

I have no official figures comparing hotel prices across borders. What I do know is that free travel stops at the border, so you'd pay the foreign leg every day and lose time doing it.

Are there cheap hotels near Luxembourg station?

The Gare district has trains, the tram and airport buses 16 and 29, but it's still Luxembourg City, so the same tourist tax applies as in the old town. There's a separate guide to hotels near the station.
