Four-day itinerary and how many days you need

Four days in Luxembourg, the length of stay I'd recommend

Four days is what I'd give Luxembourg. Two in the capital, one in Echternach and the Mullerthal rocks, and one up north in Vianden, with its €13 castle, or Clervaux, home to The Family of Man (€6). Public transport is free, and a one-day LuxembourgPass (€23) covers the castle, the chairlift and the exhibition.

  • Four days is the length of stay I'd recommend for seeing Luxembourg as a country.
  • Two days in the capital, one in Echternach and the Mullerthal, one in Vianden or Clervaux.
  • Everything works on free public transport, bus 201 and line 10 trains.
  • A one-day LuxembourgPass (€23) covers Vianden Castle, the chairlift and The Family of Man.

Three days shows you a capital and one region. The fourth is when you realise the castle country of the north and the sandstone of the Mullerthal are two different worlds, and the country starts to make sense. Beyond that you're into a week, and a different kind of trip.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 To save money

A one-day pass for the north

Vianden Castle (€13), its chairlift (€9.50) and The Family of Man (€6) add up to €28.50. All three are free with the LuxembourgPass, which costs €23 for one person for a day.

    LuxembourgPass
  2. 02 Getting there

    Clervaux by direct train

Clervaux is on CFL line 10 from the capital to Gouvy. On the weekends of 10-11 and 17-18 October 2026, a replacement bus runs between Ettelbruck and Gouvy because of engineering work.

    Clervaux
  3. 03 My tip

Put the north on a Wednesday to Sunday

The Family of Man opens Wednesday to Sunday, 12:00 to 18:00. If your day in the north falls on a Monday or Tuesday, do Vianden or the Moselle instead.

  4. 04 Most beautiful

    Vianden from the chairlift

The chairlift climbs to 440 m above the Our valley and runs until 19 October 2026. From the top you can walk down through the woods to the castle.

Day 4

  1. morning

    Vianden and its castle

Line 10 train to Diekirch, then the direct bus to Vianden. Castle (€13) and chairlift (€9.50), both free with the LuxembourgPass.

  2. afternoon

Times are a guide, based on the official opening hours checked for this guide.

If you’ve flown into Findel or come in by train from Brussels and you’re wondering how long to stay, my answer is four days. Two give the capital the time it deserves. A third adds a region. The fourth is what turns a city break into a trip round the country, because the castle country of the north and the sandstone of the Mullerthal look nothing alike, and both are day returns on free public transport.

Days 1 and 2, the capital

I’ve already set these out hour by hour, so briefly. The first is spent walking the old town, starting at the Gëlle Fra and dropping to the Grund via the Corniche and the Bock casemates. Day two takes the funicular up to Kirchberg for the Dräi Eechelen Museum and Mudam, then drops back into the Pétrusse valley in the afternoon. The details are in my Luxembourg 2 day itinerary.

Day 3, into the Mullerthal

Day three is the same one I suggest in the Luxembourg 3 day itinerary. Bus 201 leaves the capital every half hour for Echternach, the town that grew up round St Willibrord’s abbey. Basilica and square in the morning, then the Wolfsschlucht, 1.2 km on foot from the Ermesinde stop, in the afternoon. With a car, you can stop in Bourglinster, in the municipality of Junglinster, on the way back to see its 12th-century castle from the village, as the inside is by appointment only.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxemburgo before prices climb.

Day 4, castles of the north

This is the step up that the extra day buys you. There are two options, and with an early start you can do both.

Vianden is reached on line 10 to Diekirch and then a direct bus, according to visitluxembourg. Castle entry is €13, and in October it closes at five in the afternoon after opening at ten. The chairlift, €9.50 return, climbs to 440 m above the Our valley and runs until 19 October 2026. I’d take the chairlift up and come down on foot, which drops you at the castle gate.

Clervaux is on the same line with its own station. Its castle houses The Family of Man, the Edward Steichen photography show that UNESCO put on its Memory of the World register in 2003. Doors open Wednesday to Sunday, 12:00 to 18:00, costs €6 and is free for under-21s. There’s more on The Family of Man. One dated warning, on 10-11 and 17-18 October 2026 a replacement bus runs between Ettelbruck and Gouvy because of engineering work.

Where the pass pays for itself

You won’t need anything for the first two days. The LuxembourgPass earns its keep on day four. Vianden Castle, the chairlift and The Family of Man come to €28.50, and all three are free with the one-day pass at €23 for one person, going by the prices published in September 2026. If you’d rather spread your visits, the two-day pass (€33) doesn’t have to be used on consecutive days.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxemburgo before prices climb.

Prefer wine to castles?

Swap day four for the Moselle. Remich has no station but a free bus from the capital, and a riverside promenade of 3 km. From there Schengen, the village that gave its name to the agreement, is a short bus ride away, and a single €5 ticket covers both its museum and the restored boat moored alongside. It’s a slower day and, to my mind, the best choice out of season.

Ordering the days around the calendar

Two things are worth checking before you fix the order. First, The Family of Man is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so if you want Clervaux, your northern day needs to fall between Wednesday and Sunday. Second, the Pfaffenthal lift stops for maintenance from 9:00 on the first Monday of each month, which for the rest of 2026 means 5 October, 2 November and 7 December. Should your first capital day lands on one of those Mondays, swap it with the second.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Luxemburgo and choose by the reviews.

More than four days?

With five or more, it’s no longer about choosing but adding, and I plan the whole thing in a week in Luxembourg, with the Upper Sûre lake, Bourscheid, the Moselle and the mining south. That version also moves you out of the capital for a few nights, which changes the feel of the trip more than the extra sights do.

A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.

So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Luxembourg?

Two for the capital. For the country, I'd say four, two in the city, one in the Mullerthal and one up north. A week adds the Moselle, the Upper Sûre lake and the old mining south at an easy pace.

What should a Luxembourg 4 day itinerary include?

The old town and the Grund, Kirchberg and the Pétrusse, Echternach with the Wolfsschlucht, and on day four Vianden and its castle or Clervaux with The Family of Man. If you'd rather have wine than castles, swap in the Moselle.

Can you do four days in Luxembourg without a car?

Yes. Public transport has been free nationwide since 1 March 2020. Bus 201 goes to Echternach, line 10 trains to Clervaux, and Vianden is a train to Diekirch plus a bus.

Is the LuxembourgPass worth it for four days?

Yes, if you group the paid visits. Vianden Castle, its chairlift and The Family of Man total €28.50 and are all free with a one-day pass at €23. The two and three-day passes don't need consecutive days.

Should I stay in one place for four days?

I would. Every trip here is a day return from the capital. The only reason to move for a night is to enjoy Vianden or Clervaux without watching the last train.

Is four days in Luxembourg too long?

Not if you leave the capital. Two days cover the city well; the other two show you landscapes that feel nothing like it, the Mullerthal's sandstone and the castles of the north.
