Commune in the canton of Esch-sur-Alzette, in the Minett
Sanem, four villages that grew with minette
Sanem (Suessem) is a Minett commune of 19,611 residents on 1 January 2026, spread across Belvaux, Ehlerange, Sanem and Soleuvre. Mining took it from 1,289 people in 1871 to more than 10,000 by 1970, and part of the Belval site, including the university, lies within its boundaries. It has a castle at Sanem and the remains of Soleuvre castle.

Full read: 3 min
- Sanem has 19,611 residents in four localities, Belvaux, Ehlerange, Sanem and Soleuvre.
- Mining took it from 1,289 people in 1871 to more than 10,000 by 1970.
- Part of Belval, including the university, lies within its boundaries.
- Only the restored well survives of Soleuvre castle.
Sanem isn't a destination in itself; it's the commune wrapped around the west side of Belval. I'd see it in passing, with the Belvaux loop walk or a stop to look at Sanem castle from outside, and save most of the day for the blast furnaces and Esch.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
Sanem castle
The commune records that in the 13th century vassals of the lords of Soleuvre built a castle at Sanem, around which a lordship of its own later grew.

02 My tip
An 8.7 km walk from Belvaux
visitluxembourg publishes an 8.66 km circular walk of just over three hours, starting from the car park at 7 rue de Soleuvre in Belvaux.
-
03 Getting there
The other half of Belval
Part of the former Belval steel land, where the university settled, belongs to Sanem. The blast furnaces are right next door.

The Esch-Belval out-of-hours medical centre, no appointment needed, is at 3-5 avenue du Swing in Belvaux. It opens 8pm to midnight on weekdays.
What I would book
Sanem is one of those communes almost nobody searches for by name, yet it sits right in the middle of the Minett. It wraps around the western side of Belval, has nearly 20,000 residents and brings together four villages that mining turned into a small town. It isn’t a full-day destination, but it makes a good add-on to Belval.
Four villages, one commune
With 19,611 residents in STATEC’s count for 1 January 2026, Sanem is Luxembourg’s sixth-largest commune. It has four official localities, Belvaux, Ehlerange, Sanem and Soleuvre. The history the commune publishes says the names Belvaux and Soleuvre go back to Celtic times, that there were Roman villas here, the largest probably at the Grueweleck in Sanem, whose outline was spotted in 1976 from aerial photographs, and that the Franks founded Ehlerange and Sanem.
Two castles, two fates
In the Middle Ages power lay with the lords of Soleuvre, who controlled half of today’s canton of Esch from their castle on the Zolwerknapp. It was destroyed in 1145, rebuilt in stone and flattened again in 1552 by the troops of Henry II of France. It was never rebuilt and ended up as a quarry. Today only the well remains, restored by the Friends of the Knapp. Its lady, Anna von Isenburg, moved on to the castle at Differdange.
Sanem castle had a different story. In the 13th century vassals of the lords of Soleuvre built a castle there, and a lordship of its own grew up around it, which after the Thirty Years’ War also bought Arsdorf. The commune doesn’t publish visiting hours, so I’d admire it from outside.

From farmland to minette
When the French arrived after the Revolution, Soleuvre, Sanem, Belvaux and Ehlerange were joined into a single commune. In the early 19th century people here still lived mainly off the land, but the discovery of minette changed everything. The population went from 1,289 in 1871 to 10,078 in 1970, 17,000 in July 2018 and 18,000 in March 2022.
The latest chapter is Belval. Part of the former steel land belongs to Sanem, and with the end of steelmaking and the arrival of the university, the commune sees its future there.
Things to do in Sanem
For walkers, visitluxembourg publishes an 8.66 km circular route from Belvaux, starting at the car park at 7 rue de Soleuvre, which it reckons takes just over three hours. For cyclists, the Belvaux pump track on rue de la Poste opens from 7am to 10pm. And one practical note, the Esch-Belval out-of-hours medical centre is in Belvaux, on avenue du Swing, seeing patients without an appointment in the evening on weekdays and all day at weekends. Bring your GHIC.
If you’re staying for the evening, check the listings at the Artikuss, Soleuvre’s performance hall at 3 rue Jean Anen. visitluxembourg describes it as a new venue fully kitted out with sound, lighting, a projector and a stage, hosting concerts, dance and theatre through the year. I see it as the counterweight to the Rockhal at Belval, a few minutes away, for anyone who’d rather have a commune-sized hall than a stadium-scale gig. The full programme is on artikuss.lu.
A few doors up, at 12 rue Jean Anen, you’ll find RedRock, which visitluxembourg ranks as Luxembourg’s biggest and newest-built climbing centre, with a 15-metre main hall and 2,000 m² of climbing surface across roped walls and bouldering. Kit can be hired on site, so there’s no need to pack climbing shoes. There’s more on it in the rock climbing in Luxembourg guide.
By train, Sanem is reached via Bascharage-Sanem station or the Belval stops, all free in second class. And if you’re staying in the area, the Minett guide covers the neighbouring communes.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Esch-sur-Alzette on Expedia and filter by area before price.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
