Remerschen, lakes and vineyards on the Luxembourg Moselle

Remerschen is a wine village in the commune of Schengen, on the Luxembourg Moselle. It's known for its swimming lakes, the Baggerweieren, 25 hectares of water with a beach, a 3,000-person cap and a dog beach, and for the Haff Réimech nature reserve with its free Biodiversum centre. It also has the Caves du Sud winery and a youth hostel.

Remerschen is my answer when someone asks where to swim in the south of the country. On a hot day I'd arrive early, because entry is capped at 3,000, and save the bird reserve for the afternoon, when the beach is at its busiest and the Biodiversum is quiet.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    A beach among the vineyards

The Baggerweieren are 25 hectares of lakes with a beach, rowing boats and paddleboards for hire, a stone's throw from the Moselle vines.

  2. 02 My tip

    Buy your ticket online

Entry to the lakes is paid and capped at 3,000 people. You can pay at the gate, but on hot days an online ticket saves you being turned away.

  3. 03 To save money

A cheap bed in a cloister

The youth hostel fills a restored former cloister and a modern block. It's €32 a night with breakfast for members and €36 without a card, as of September 2026.

    Bring the dog

The lakes have a beach set aside for dogs. More places that welcome them are in the guide to travelling with a pet.

What I would book

Nobody comes to Remerschen for the village itself. They come for what lies between the houses and the river. There you’ll find the lakes that are, to my mind, the best summer outing in the south of the country, and beside them, round another set of ponds, a bird reserve whose nature centre is a futuristic building on an artificial island. It’s one of the nine localities in the commune of Schengen village, a few kilometres from the tripoint.

The lakes, a beach among the vines

The Baggerweieren, old gravel pits turned into lakes, cover 25 hectares of water, and the regional tourist office bills them as somewhere for everyone. In spring and summer there’s a beach, rowing boats and paddleboards to hire, drinks and snacks, and barbecues are allowed as long as they stand on legs. There’s even a beach just for dogs. Entry is paid and capped at 3,000 people, so on a hot day I’d buy online.

What impresses me most is how well access has been thought through. Tarmac paths and wooden boardwalks lead to the water, with a gently shelving bank, ramps, a lift and beach wheelchairs, plus accessible toilets, showers and changing rooms.

The reserve next door

Right beside the lakes is the Haff Réimech nature reserve, which the government portal rates as unmissable for birdwatchers. Its centre, the Biodiversum, is free, and a trail sets off from it around the ponds. If you’ve come for a swim, give it at least an hour, as it’s only a short walk.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Remich before prices climb.

Wine and art on the road

Remerschen is a winegrowers’ village. At 32 Route du Vin you’ll find the Caves du Sud, one of the four sites of Vinsmoselle, the cooperative founded in 1921 that is the country’s largest producer of wine and crémant. This cellar dates from 1948 and farms 70 hectares. In late September 2026 its doors were open Tuesday to Sunday, with tastings bookable from €10. For other cellars to pair it with, see the Luxembourg Moselle wine route.

Right next door, at number 34, the Valentiny Foundation shows the work of the architect François Valentiny and puts on temporary exhibitions of modern art and architecture. visitluxembourg recommends it to art lovers.

The numbers explain why I’d give it an hour. According to visitluxembourg there are about 3,260 objects on display, drawings, sketches, sculptures and models, some of them made with his Viennese partner Hubert Hermann, alongside shows by other contemporary artists. It’s an afternoon place, 14:00 to 18:00 from Wednesday to Sunday in the October 2026 listing, so I’d do the lakes or the reserve in the morning and leave this for after lunch.

Getting there

Remerschen has no station. Buses from the capital are free inside Luxembourg and mobiliteit.lu lists the times, so check your return before you settle on the beach. By bike you can ride over from Schengen, where the tourist office in the museum hires out ordinary and electric bikes from March to October. If you drive, the lakes’ car park has spaces for disabled drivers.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Remich before prices climb.

Staying in Remerschen

The Remerschen/Schengen youth hostel occupies a restored former cloister and a modern building, with 138 beds. As of September 2026 it charged €32 a person a night with breakfast for members and €36 without a card, with check-in from 17:00 to 22:00. How the network and membership work is explained in youth hostels in Luxembourg. For a hotel, Remich, downriver, makes more sense.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Remich and choose by the reviews.

A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.

So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.
