Eating on a budget
Eating cheaply in Luxembourg without missing the local food
Eating out in Luxembourg is expensive, but you can spend a lot less. Bakeries selling Rieslingspaschtéit, the capital's markets, potato fritters at fairs and Christmas markets, Michelin's three Bib Gourmands and youth hostel dining rooms, where a simple meal costs €13 for members (€14 without a card) as of September 2026.

- Eating out in Luxembourg is pricey; Eurostat puts restaurants and hotels at 123.6 against an EU average of 100.
- The cheapest local food is Rieslingspaschtéit from a bakery and potato fritters at fairs.
- The youth hostels publish a simple meal at €13 (members) or €14 as of September 2026.
- Service is included by law and the tap water is safe to drink.
My formula for a cheap day in the capital is a bakery breakfast, Rieslingspaschtéit and market fruit for lunch on a bench with a view, and just one sit-down hot meal. Saving on everything else leaves money for what's worth it here, which for me is a good bottle of crémant.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 To save money
Treat the bakery as your restaurant
The national portal says Rieslingspaschtéit is sold in every bakery in the country and eaten cold. A slice with some bread is a proper Luxembourgish lunch.
Rieslingspaschtéit -
02 To save money
A market twice a week
The Stater Maart on Place Guillaume II runs on Wednesdays and Saturdays, 7:30 to 14:00, with fruit, veg, fresh cheese and homemade jam. The Garer Maart on Place de Paris is on Thursdays.

03 My tip
Hostel meals with published prices
The youth hostels list a packed lunch at €8 and a simple meal at €13 for members (€8.50 and €14 without a card). If you're staying in one, it's the cheapest hot meal with an official price I've found.

A Bib Gourmand
Not cheap, but the most affordable way to eat with Michelin's approval. K restaurant, Parc Le'h and Bazaar.
7.6 out of 10
I’m not going to sell you a fairy tale. Luxembourg is expensive for eating out, and no trick turns it into a bargain destination. What you can do is spend far less without giving up its food, because a good chunk of what’s most typical is eaten standing up, in the street or on a park bench. This is my approach.
Just how expensive is it?
There are no official menu prices and I won’t quote numbers from hearsay. There is, though, a solid benchmark. Eurostat’s price level index for overall household consumption puts Luxembourg at 150.7 and the UK at 129.1, with the EU average at 100. For restaurants and hotels alone, Luxembourg comes out at 123.6, but the query returned no British figure for that line, so I won’t pretend to compare it. Food in the shops is also above average, at 124.8. The wider budget picture is in is Luxembourg expensive.
Bakeries, your best friend
If I had to keep just one tip, it would be this. The national portal says Rieslingspaschtéit, the veal pie set with Riesling jelly, is sold in every bakery and eaten cold. A slice, a roll and a piece of fruit make a very Luxembourgish lunch without setting foot in a restaurant. If you’d rather sit down, the tourist board mentions that Oberweis has shops in the capital where you can also eat. What the pie is and how to order it is in Rieslingspaschtéit.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxembourg before prices climb.
Markets and supermarkets for a picnic
The capital has fresh produce markets in several districts. The best known, the Stater Maart, sets up on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7:30 to 14:00 on Place Guillaume II, with fruit, vegetables, flowers, spices, fresh cheese and homemade jam. On Thursdays, the Garer Maart fills Place de Paris near the station with about a dozen stalls. The national portal adds that the Cactus supermarket chain sells fruit and veg from Luxembourg growers under the Eist Uebst a Geméis label. With that and the tap water, which is safe to drink, lunch is sorted, and a city this full of parks and viewpoints is never short of places to eat it.
Hot food at the fair
Gromperekichelcher, grated potato fritters fried and served with salt and apple sauce, are the food of every local festival. The national portal lists them at the Octave market, on the eve of National Day, at the Schueberfouer funfair and at the Christmas markets. If your trip coincides with Winterlights, from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, or with the Schueberfouer, from 20 August to 8 September 2027, eating on your feet is both the cheapest option and the best way to see the country at play.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxembourg before prices climb.
Youth hostels with published prices
This is the only place where I’ve found official prices for a hot meal. As of September 2026, the youth hostel network lists a packed lunch at €8 for members (€8.50 without a card), a simple meal at €13 (€14) and a full menu at €15 (€17). For guests it’s very handy, especially in the north and the Mullerthal, and I cover it in youth hostels in Luxembourg.
My budget day, step by step
I’d plan it like this. Breakfast from a bakery, a wander round the Ville Haute and a stop at the market if it’s Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday. A picnic lunch of Rieslingspaschtéit and fruit, and in the afternoon, if there’s a fair or Christmas market, hot potato fritters. Just one sit-down meal, ideally at lunchtime. As public transport is free across the country, nothing ties you to the centre at mealtimes, so you can head to the Moselle for fried fish or to Diekirch for a beer without buying a ticket.
If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Luxembourg and choose by the reviews.
And if I want to sit down in a restaurant?
Then I’d look at Michelin’s Bib Gourmands, which reward very good food at moderate prices. In September 2026 there are three, K restaurant in Huldange, Parc Le’h in Dudelange and Bazaar in the capital. They aren’t cheap by British standards, but you eat well for a good deal less than at a starred table. One last point that helps you compare, by law prices are shown with service included, inside and outside, so you can choose from the pavement with the menu in front of you.
A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.
So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.

Eurostat, table prc_ppp_ind. The query returned no UK figure for restaurants and hotels, so I don't compare that line.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I eat cheaply in Luxembourg?
In bakeries and delis, which sell Rieslingspaschtéit across the country; at the capital's markets; at fairs and Christmas markets, for potato fritters; and, if you're staying in a youth hostel, in its dining room, with a simple meal at €13 or €14.
How much does a meal cost in Luxembourg?
No official source publishes restaurant menu prices, so I won't quote any. Eurostat puts Luxembourg's price level for restaurants and hotels at 123.6 against an EU average of 100. In the youth hostels, a simple meal is €13 for members.
Are there any cheap restaurants in Luxembourg City?
Cheap by local standards, yes. The Michelin Guide gives its Bib Gourmand, for very good food at moderate prices, to Bazaar in the capital, plus K restaurant in Huldange and Parc Le'h in Dudelange.
Do I need to tip in Luxembourg?
Service is included in bar and restaurant prices by law. There's no official tipping figure, so anything extra is up to you.
Can you drink the tap water in Luxembourg?
Yes, the tap water is safe to drink according to official sources. A refillable bottle is one of the easiest savings on the trip.
Is it cheaper to shop in supermarkets?
Almost always, and the national portal notes that the Cactus chain sells fruit and vegetables from Luxembourg growers under the Eist Uebst a Geméis label. Add bakery bread and you have a picnic of local produce.
