The Alzette at Hesperange with the yellow church, colourful houses and the castle ruins high on the rock

Municipality in the canton of Luxembourg

Hesperange, a castle knocked down twice on the capital's edge

Hesperange is a municipality of 17,264 people (1-1-2026) right on the southern edge of Luxembourg City, the seventh most populous in the country. It has five localities, including Howald, and in Hesperange village, above the Alzette, the ruins of a castle that Maximilian of Austria had dismantled in 1480 and 1482. The ruins are privately owned.

Hesperange isn't a day out, it's a stop. I'd head down to the Alzette to see the church with the castle ruins on the rock above, which is the village's defining view, and then move on. The ruins are private, so you admire them from below.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    Ruins on the rock

Maximilian of Austria had Hesperange castle dismantled in August 1480 and again in 1482. What survives is privately owned and has been on the supplementary list of national monuments since 1984.

    Tram and train at Howald

Howald, one of Hesperange's five localities, has a tram interchange, Howald Gare, and a railway station on the lines towards Esch-sur-Alzette and Metz. All free in second class within the country.

Bus 29 cuts across the capital

Line 29 runs from Hesperange to Senningerberg via Howald, the central station and Cents-Hamm, according to the airport. For getting about without a car, it's the one to know.

    Luxembourg buses

Hesperange begins where the capital stops on its southern side. With 17,264 residents on 1 January 2026, Hesperange ranks as Luxembourg’s seventh most populous municipality, and most travellers only know it as a name on the road south. It deserves a pause for one particular view, the Alzette with the church and, above them, the castle ruins on their rock.

A castle an emperor wanted gone

The castle’s story is what makes Hesperange interesting, and visitluxembourg tells it in detail. The site first appears in 867 or 868 as Hasmaringa marca, tied to Echternach Abbey. Early in the 13th century the lordship passed to the Rodemack family, and the castle came to have an 18-metre keep on its western side.

In August 1480 Maximilian of Austria had it dismantled, and did so again between May and June 1482. On 15 November 1492 it was handed to Margrave Christoph of Baden. It was pawned in 1632 and redeemed in 1740, French troops turned up on 25 July 1796, and in 1798 it was declared national property and sold at auction. By 1820 seven small houses had been built on the site.

Today the ruins belong to private owners and have been on the supplementary list of national monuments since 1984. Even so, the visitluxembourg listing says the castle is accessible free of charge all year, on the Montée du Château. To me it’s a castle that’s better told than visited. For castles that open their doors, my full list of castles in Luxembourg has them.

What else is there in Hesperange?

The municipality has five official localities, Alzingen, Fentange, Hesperange, Howald and Itzig, and covers about 27 km² on a calculation from STATEC figures. It’s largely residential. For a visitor, the interest lies in Hesperange village by the river and in Howald, which acts as a transport hub for the south of the capital. To the south-east, Weiler-la-Tour is already countryside, with the source of the Syre at Syren.

Hesperange-Howald park, a market and photos

The municipal park, which visitluxembourg lists as the park in Hesperange and Howald, is a big one, just behind the town hall on route de Thionville. There are benches by a pond, pitches for volleyball, basketball and football, and the council stages events there through the year. For me it’s the place to stretch your legs after looking up at the ruins.

The municipal diary offers two easy plans for autumn 2026. A fresh produce market outside the town hall every other Wednesday from 15:00 to 19:00, with dates on 14 and 28 October and 11 and 25 November. And until 31 December, an open-air photography exhibition by Anna Krieps, Dreamwood, in the municipal park from 07:00 to 22:00. If your trip lands on a market Wednesday, that’s the afternoon I’d stop in Hesperange.

Getting there by public transport

It’s one of the best-connected municipalities in the country. Howald has an interchange stop on the Luxembourg tram, Howald Gare, plus a railway station on the lines towards Esch-sur-Alzette and Metz. Bus 29 starts in Hesperange and crosses the capital via Howald and the central station to Senningerberg, in Niederanven. It’s all free in second class, as I explain in free public transport in Luxembourg.

My advice for Hesperange

I wouldn’t stay in Hesperange or give it a whole morning. I’d treat it as a short stop, dropping down to the Alzette for the view of the church and the ruins, as part of a trip round the southern edge of Luxembourg City. By bus, the 29 drops you nearby and takes you back to the centre for nothing.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Luxembourg and pick one that fits your day.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
