The town of Clervaux in the valley bottom, with the white castle and its conical towers and green hills around

Clervaux (Klierf) had 7 hotel establishments and 5 campsites in 2025, according to STATEC, and it's the best base in the north if you're travelling without a car, because it has a station on CFL line 10. Its castle houses The Family of Man, on UNESCO's Memory of the World register, and stages of the Éislek Trail start nearby. Troisvierges, Wiltz and Weiswampach offer far less.

  • Its station on CFL line 10 makes it the best northern base without a car.

  • Troisvierges had no hotels in 2025; Wiltz had two and Weiswampach three.

If you're heading north without a car, Clervaux is my base. The train drops you in town, the castle with The Family of Man is a stroll away, and you can walk a stage of the Éislek Trail without moving your bags. One night covers the town; two if you're walking.

    Engineering works in October 2026

On the weekends of 10-11 and 17-18 October 2026, CFL replaces trains with buses between Ettelbruck, Wiltz, Kautenbach and Gouvy. Arriving then? Allow extra time.

What I would book

Clervaux is the town in northern Luxembourg I’d pick first if you’re travelling without a car. It sits at the bottom of an Ardennes valley beneath a 12th-century castle, and it has something Vianden lacks, a railway station of its own. The castle holds one of the world’s best-known photography exhibitions, and stages of one of the country’s great walking routes begin nearby.

How many beds the north has

The commune of Clervaux had seven hotel establishments in 2025, up by one on the year before, by STATEC’s count, plus five campsites. The whole canton had twelve hotels and nine campsites. The commune is large, with 25 official localities including Marnach and Munshausen, so not every one of those hotels is in the town itself.

Beyond Clervaux, the north is thin on beds. Weiswampach had three hotels in 2025, Wincrange and Parc Hosingen one each, and Troisvierges none. Wiltz, in the neighbouring canton, had two. If you’re coming north, the real question isn’t which village, but Clervaux or Vianden.

Why Clervaux works without a car

The station, at 12 rue de la Gare, is on CFL line 10, which climbs from the capital through Mersch, Ettelbruck, Diekirch and Wiltz to Troisvierges and Gouvy, over the Belgian border. Within Luxembourg, second class is free. So you can arrive with a suitcase, leave it at the hotel and get around the north by train and on foot.

Watch out in October 2026. Because of track work, mobiliteit.lu lists replacement buses instead of trains between Ettelbruck, Wiltz, Kautenbach and Gouvy on two weekends running, 10 and 11 and then 17 and 18. Arriving then, allow extra time.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Clervaux before prices climb.

What’s on foot

The 12th-century castle was destroyed on 17 December 1944 and restored afterwards. Today it houses The Family of Man, Edward Steichen’s exhibition of 503 photographs by 273 photographers from 68 countries, installed in Clervaux in 1994 and on the Memory of the World register since 2003. In 2026 it opens Wednesday to Sunday from noon to 6pm, until 1 January 2027, and costs €6, free up to 21. The same castle has a Battle of the Bulge museum and models of 22 Luxembourg castles.

In town, the church of Saints Cosmas and Damian, in Rhenish Romanesque style, is recognisable by its twin towers. Clervaux Abbey, the Benedictine house of St Maurice, holds Mass daily at 10am with Gregorian chant, open to visitors, and its shop sells its own apple juice. That alone, to my mind, justifies sleeping here rather than turning up at lunchtime.

The hotels, by name

On the Grand-Rue, the pedestrian street through the old centre, are the two Excellence group hotels. Le Clervaux Boutique & Design Hotel, at number 9, is four-star superior according to its visitluxembourg listing, with 22 Art Deco-inspired suites and free use of the Cinq Mondes spa, which has a pool, sauna, hammam and hot tub. At number 14, the Koener is a four-star with 90 rooms and suites, the same spa included in the stay and a seminar centre for up to 250 people.

The Hotel du Commerce, at 2 route de Marnach, describes itself as a traditional family hotel below the castle, with five suites and a buffet breakfast included. And 3 km out at Eselborn, the Hotel du Golf de Clervaux sits in the clubhouse of the 18-hole course, with 23 rooms looking over the fairways and walking routes from the door; the course itself is in my guide to golf in Luxembourg. My pick without a car is the Grand-Rue; if you’re driving and want silence, the golf hotel.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Clervaux before prices climb.

For walkers

Clervaux is a stage town on the Éislek Trail, the Luxembourg half of the Escapardenne. The first stage arrives from Kautenbach, 24 km, and the second heads to Asselborn, 21 km. Staying in town lets you walk one of them one way and come back by train from the nearest station, which is what I’d do to avoid carrying a full pack.

For the long version, the Escapardenne runs to 159 km in total, and the Éislek Trail carries on over the border to Houffalize, Nadrin and La Roche-en-Ardenne in Belgium. Only about 50 km of it lies in Luxembourg, which is why Clervaux, halfway along that stretch, makes such a sensible overnight stop.

The average hotel stay in the Ardennes was 1.80 nights in 2025, according to STATEC. For one stage and the castle, two nights is about right.

What about Wiltz?

Wiltz is the north’s other railway town, on the same line 10, and it has its own castle, home to the National Museum of Brewing and Tanning, €9 with audio guide and tasting, and a Battle of the Bulge museum. The trouble is beds. STATEC counted two hotel establishments there in 2025, so I’d treat it as a visit from Clervaux rather than a base. If you’re driving, Clervaux station also has 164 free parking spaces.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Clervaux and choose by the reviews.

Heading further north

The country’s highest point, the 560-metre Kneiff, is in the commune of Troisvierges, which had no hotels in 2025. The practical plan is to stay in Clervaux and take the train up to Troisvierges. To compare with the north’s other big base, see hotels in Vianden, and for the town itself, the Clervaux guide. Every area is summarised in where to stay in Luxembourg.
