Everything you can do for free in Luxembourg

Luxembourg has plenty that's free. All public transport, the Pfaffenthal lift and the funicular, free-entry museums such as Casino Luxembourg, the Europa Experience and the Tram and Bus Museum, open-access castle ruins at Koerich, Brandenbourg and Esch-sur-Sûre, and the capital's big museums, free on certain evenings and for young people.

In 30 seconds

Full read: 3 min

  • Luxembourg's public transport is free, including the Pfaffenthal lift and the funicular.
  • Casino Luxembourg, the Europa Experience and the Tram and Bus Museum are always free.
  • The Mudam, Dräi Eechelen, Natur Musée, MNHA and City Museum have free evenings.
  • Koerich, Brandenbourg and the Esch-sur-Sûre ruins are open-access castles.

The capital's free options fill a whole day without opening your wallet. I'd do it on a Wednesday, ending the afternoon in Kirchberg with the Mudam and the Dräi Eechelen at no charge.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

The Chemin de la Corniche, free at any hour

The walk along the ramparts, with the Grund and the Alzette below, has no ticket and no opening hours. It's where I'd start any visit to the capital.

  2. 02 To save money

A lift with a view for nothing

The panoramic lift drops 60 m between the old town and the Pfaffenthal in 30 seconds, from 05:45 to 01:00. In 2026 it closes from 09:00 on 5 October, 2 November and 7 December.

  3. 03 My tip

A free cinema in a Vauban tower

In the Bons-Malades gate in the Pfaffenthal there's a small room screening a film for free every day from 10:00 to 18:00, according to the LCTO.

Thursdays, the MNHA and City Museum for free

The National Museum (MNHA) is free on Thursdays from 17:30 to 20:00 and the Lëtzebuerg City Museum on Thursdays from 18:00 to 20:00. Two old-town museums in one evening.

What I would book

In a country with prices this high, anything free counts double. And Luxembourg has a lot of it, more than usually gets mentioned. I’ve sorted it by type, with the times published by the museums themselves and the tourist office, so you can plan a day or two without buying a single ticket. More ways to spend less, from beds to meals, are in Luxembourg on a budget.

Getting around is already free

The biggest one first. Luxembourg stopped charging for public transport on 1 March 2020. Buses, trams, second-class trains and the Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg funicular cost nothing nationwide, tourists included. Airport to centre, centre to Clervaux or Esch-sur-Alzette, no ticket. What’s excluded, first class and legs abroad, is in Luxembourg free public transport.

Then there are the lifts. The panoramic one drops from Pescatore park to the Pfaffenthal in half a minute and runs between 05:45 and 01:00, except on maintenance mornings, which for the rest of 2026 fall on 5 Oct, 2 Nov and 7 Dec from 09:00. A second, less showy lift connects the Grund with the Cité judiciaire above.

The capital on foot, no tickets

The best way to get to know Luxembourg City costs nothing. The Chemin de la Corniche, a walk along the old ramparts with the Grund and the Alzette below, has no ticket and no hours. Dropping into the Grund, crossing the Alzette and climbing through the Pfaffenthal is free too, and in the Bons-Malades gate in the Pfaffenthal the LCTO says a small room screens a film free daily between 10:00 and 18:00. The same district has had a Kneipp foot bath since 2016.

Between May and October, on the first Sunday of each month, there’s an open-air art market, Konscht am Gronn, on the bridge in the Grund. Browsing the stalls and chatting to the artists costs nothing, and it’s one of my favourite Sunday plans in the city.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Luxemburgo on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

Museums that are always free

Three museums in the capital never charge. Casino Luxembourg, the contemporary art forum, which despite the name isn’t a gambling venue, opens every day except Tuesday according to the LCTO. The Europa Experience in Kirchberg opens from 10:00 to 18:00, Monday to Saturday, and asks for ID, so bring your passport. And the Tram and Bus Museum in Hollerich has free entry on Thursday afternoons and at weekends and on public holidays.

Which museums are free on certain evenings?

This is the big trick. The Natur Musée is free on Tuesdays from 17:30 to 20:00. The Mudam, on Wednesdays between 18:00 and 21:00, and the Dräi Eechelen next door, also on Wednesdays, between 17:30 and 20:00. The National Museum of History and Art (MNHA) is free on Thursdays from 17:30 to 20:00, and the Lëtzebuerg City Museum on Thursdays from 18:00 to 20:00.

They’re also all free for young people. The Mudam, the Natur Musée and the City Museum for under-21s. For under-26s, the MNHA and the Dräi Eechelen. For me, Mudam is the best free evening in town, for Pei’s building as much as for what’s inside.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Luxemburgo on Expedia and filter by area before price.

Castles that don’t charge

Outside the capital there’s free heritage too. Koerich Castle, a lowland castle from the late 12th century, is open access from 09:00 to 18:00 all year. Brandenbourg, near Vianden, is a ruin with information panels, open the same hours. And the castle ruins at Esch-sur-Sûre, once seat of the lords of Esch, are free to explore. On the Moselle, the Biodiversum nature centre at Remerschen has free entry.

Of the three castles, Koerich is the easiest to fit into a day from the capital, in the Guttland to the west, while Brandenbourg pairs naturally with a trip to Vianden and Esch-sur-Sûre with the Upper Sûre lake. None of them needs booking, so you can decide on the day depending on the weather.

How I’d plan a free day

I’d start in the morning on the Chemin de la Corniche, drop into the Grund and cross to the Pfaffenthal to ride the lift back up. Lunch would be a picnic with tap water, which is drinkable, and in the afternoon I’d take the free tram to Kirchberg. On a Wednesday, the Dräi Eechelen from 17:30 and the Mudam from 18:00, without spending a cent all day. One more freebie worth knowing about if your UK phone plan is stingy with European data. Every CFL station has free wifi, on the CFL-FREE-WIFI network. For what the paid side costs, see is Luxembourg expensive.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Luxemburgo and pick one that fits your day.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.

If you still need a way in, check the best ticket deals to Luxembourg from where you are.
