The stone bridge at Vianden over the River Our, with white and pink houses on the bank and the forest behind

In Luxembourg, character hotels are found outside the capital. On STATEC's 2025 figures, hotels in the Mullerthal average around 45 beds and those on the Moselle around 65, against roughly 137 in the city. Vianden and Clervaux, with seven hotel establishments each, Echternach and Berdorf among the sandstone gorges, and Remich among the vines are where I'd look.

  • Luxembourg's character hotels are in the small towns, not the capital.
  • By my sums on STATEC's 2025 figures, the average Mullerthal hotel has about 45 beds and the average city one about 137.
  • Vianden and Clervaux each had seven hotel establishments in 2025.
  • In the capital, the Grund is the most characterful district to sleep in.

To me, charm in Luxembourg means waking up in Vianden with the castle in the window, or in Berdorf ten minutes' walk from the rocks. I wouldn't look for it in the capital, except in an old house in the Grund by the Alzette, the exception that proves the rule.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    Vianden comes alive after dark

Seven hotel establishments in 2025 for a town of around 2,200 people, with the castle floodlit above the Our. Once the coach parties leave, it's a different place.

  2. 02 Most beautiful

    Sleeping among the rocks

Echternach had six hotels in 2025 and Berdorf five. They're the base for walking the Mullerthal Trail, which starts at Echternach's basilica.

  3. 03 My tip

    The Grund, the urban exception

For character without leaving the capital, look in the Grund, on the banks of the Alzette and inside the UNESCO-listed old town. A free public lift takes you up to the Ville Haute.

  4. 04 Worth the splurge

Remich, wine and a riverside walk

Four hotels in 2025 and a 3 km promenade under lime and cherry trees beside the Moselle. The region's average stay is the country's longest, 2.38 nights.

What I would book

Boutique is a label every website uses its own way, and in Luxembourg nobody classifies it officially. I won’t give you a list of names I can’t verify, only the odd one with an official listing. What I can tell you is something the data shows quite plainly, which is where the small hotels are, and for me being small is the minimum requirement for character.

Size tells you almost everything

STATEC publishes how many hotels and bed places each tourist region has. Divide one by the other, which is my own sum rather than an official figure, and in 2025 the average hotel in the capital had about 137 beds, in the Ardennes about 67, on the Moselle about 65 and in the Mullerthal about 45. In other words, outside the capital hotels are a half or a third of the size.

Another figure gives me pause. Between 2024 and 2025 the country went from 208 hotel establishments to 182, yet bed places rose from 16,089 to 16,880. The statistics don’t explain why. My reading is that small hotels are closing while large ones grow, and if that’s right, the family-run village hotel is something to enjoy while it lasts.

Which town would I pick for a special night?

Vianden, without much thought. It had seven hotel establishments in 2025 for a town of around 2,200 people, the restored castle towers over the Our valley and, once the afternoon coaches have gone, the streets belong to whoever’s staying. Areas and tips are in hotels in Vianden.

Clervaux is my second choice. Another seven establishments, a white castle that houses The Family of Man exhibition, the Benedictine abbey on the hillside and, unlike Vianden, a station on the northern line. Travelling without a car, that tips the balance, because you can arrive by train from the capital, walk up to the castle and leave the next morning without a single bus connection to worry about. Here there is one name that genuinely fits the boutique label, because its official listing says so. Le Clervaux Boutique & Design Hotel, in the town’s old centre, has 22 suites styled with an Art Deco touch, a four-star superior rating and the Cinq Mondes spa included. For something more homely, the Hotel du Commerce calls itself a family hotel below the castle. Both are in hotels in Clervaux.

If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Vianden for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.

Sandstone and vines

In the Mullerthal, the sandstone country nicknamed Little Switzerland, charm goes hand in hand with walking. Echternach, which visitluxembourg calls Luxembourg’s oldest town, had six hotels in 2025, and Berdorf, up on the plateau, five. Staying in Berdorf puts route 2 of the Mullerthal Trail on your doorstep. I cover it in Mullerthal hotels.

The Moselle moves at a different pace. Remich had four hotels and a promenade of about 3 km under lime and cherry trees by the river. The average hotel stay in the region was 2.38 nights in 2025, the longest in the country, and I think that says a lot about why people come. For a glass of crémant, unhurried, a cellar visit in the afternoon and a stroll by the river as the light goes. For that kind of trip, a small hotel with a view of the water is worth more than any big-hotel facility.

A word on Esch-sur-Sûre

The Upper Sûre village is one of the most photogenic in the north, with its castle ruins above a loop in the river. visitluxembourg lists hotels, holiday flats and B&Bs there, but STATEC doesn’t publish a figure for the commune. In summer, with the lake open for swimming, I’d put it on the list; see hotels in Esch-sur-Sûre.

Character without leaving the capital

If your trip is city only, the district with most character is the Grund. Old houses on the banks of the Alzette, Neumünster Abbey, riverside bars and the Ville Haute right above, reached by a free public lift. All inside the UNESCO-listed old town. It’s the exception to my rule of looking for charm elsewhere. The one thing to bear in mind is that the Grund is the capital, so the city’s 3% tourist tax applies, just as it does up in the Ville Haute.

What I’d check before booking

Three things, in this order. That the hotel is in the town itself rather than on a through road, because distances here are deceptive and a hotel 3 km from Vianden isn’t really Vianden. That there’s a bus or train nearby, since public transport is free within the country. And, in high season, that you don’t leave it late, because seven establishments fill up fast.

If you’d like more independence than a hotel gives, have a look at holiday cottages in Luxembourg, and to pick the town for its looks before the bed, the prettiest villages in Luxembourg.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Vianden on GetYourGuide.

If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.

Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the best boutique hotels in Luxembourg?

In the small towns, above all Vianden and Clervaux up north, Echternach and Berdorf in the Mullerthal, and Remich on the Moselle. In the capital, the Grund is the most characterful district to stay in.

Are there boutique hotels in Luxembourg City?

I don't have an official list of boutique hotels to check against. What the data does show is that the capital's hotels are large, around 137 beds on average in 2025 by my sums on STATEC figures, so the small format is easier to find outside.

Which Luxembourg town is loveliest for an overnight stay?

For me, Vianden. It has seven hotel establishments, the castle above the Our and a chairlift up to a viewpoint. Clervaux would be my second choice, with the bonus of a railway station.

Why does Luxembourg have fewer hotels than it used to?

STATEC counted 208 hotel establishments in 2024 and 182 in 2025, even though bed places rose from 16,089 to 16,880. The statistics don't give a reason; my reading is that small hotels are closing while big ones grow, but that's my interpretation.

Are there B&Bs in Luxembourg?

Yes. visitluxembourg mentions chambres d'hôtes in Esch-sur-Sûre and talks about rentals, gîtes and guest rooms in every region. They're covered in my page on holiday cottages in Luxembourg.

Is there a boutique hotel with a spa in northern Luxembourg?

Yes, Le Clervaux Boutique & Design Hotel at 9 Grand-Rue in Clervaux. visitluxembourg lists it as four-star superior with 22 Art Deco-style suites, and access to the Cinq Mondes spa, with pool, sauna and hammam, is included in the stay.
