The coldest month, 1.4°C on average
Luxembourg in January, the coldest month and the calmest
January is Luxembourg's coldest month, averaging 1.4°C at Findel with 71.5 mm of rain and only 52 hours of sunshine. Winterlights keeps its Christmas markets going in the capital until 3 January 2027, shops are shut by law on New Year's Day, and the rest of the month is for museums, Moselle wine with cheese and a lot of closed seasonal sights.

- January is Luxembourg's coldest month, averaging 1.4°C at Findel with 52 hours of sunshine.
- Winterlights keeps the capital's Christmas markets open until Sunday 3 January 2027.
- Shops are shut by law on New Year's Day; restaurants and hotels aren't.
- The Vianden chairlift, Echternach's Roman villa and other seasonal sights are closed in January.
I'd only pick January for Luxembourg City, ideally the first three days while a few markets are still open. After the 3rd it's a month for museums and quieter hotels, not for the north, where the light is short, the weather is grim and plenty of places are closed.

01 My tip
New Year's Day, the shops stay shut
1 January is one of three days a year when Luxembourg law bans shops from opening. Bakeries, patisseries and a few food shops may trade from 5:00 to 19:00; restaurants and hotels carry on as normal.

Catch the tail end of Winterlights
The capital's Christmas markets stay up until Sunday 3 January 2027, so Place d'Armes, the Gëlle Fra and Place de Paris are still lit when you arrive for New Year.

03 Getting there
Museum hopping on free trams
Trams, buses and second-class trains have been free for everyone inside the country since 1 March 2020, which makes a cold day of museums far easier.

Wine and cheese on the Moselle
Moselle wineries run Wine Cheese Enjoy in January and February, according to the regional tourist office. A good reason to leave the city on a grey day.

What I would book
If you’re thinking of a January break in Luxembourg, know this first. It’s the darkest, coldest month of the year, the country shuts its shops on the 1st and a fair amount of the countryside simply isn’t open. Go in with that in mind and it can still be a very good few days, mostly in the capital.
New Year and the last of the markets
The year opens with a bank holiday. In 2027 New Year’s Day falls on a Friday, and by law shops stay closed apart from bakeries, patisseries and a handful of food shops, which may open from 5:00 to 19:00. Restaurants and hotels are exempt, so you’ll eat fine, you just won’t shop.
The festive season lingers until Sunday the 3rd. That’s the final day of Winterlights, with stalls spread across four squares, Guillaume II, Paris, Constitution and Armes, and also the last day of Luxembourg’s own Christmas school break. For stalls, mulled wine and the lights, those three days are your window, and Christmas in Luxembourg has the detail. If you’d rather have the city to yourself, arrive on Monday the 4th.
How cold, and how grey?
MeteoLux gives Findel a January mean of 1.4°C (34.5°F), the lowest of its twelve months. For the city itself, STATEC puts the average high at 4.7°C and the low at −1.0°C, so you’ll spend most days hovering around freezing. Rainfall reaches 71.5 mm, usually as drizzle over many grey days, and sunshine totals a meagre 52 hours.
Fog settles on about 10 days and black ice on 1.3. The record range for the month runs from 13.9°C on 15 January 1975 down to −17.8°C on 1 January 1979, while thunderstorms barely feature at 0.3 a month. If you’re driving, winter tyres are compulsory when there’s ice or snow on the road. You’ll find the whole year laid out in Luxembourg weather.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Luxembourg for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
What’s shut, and what isn’t?
This is where a lot of people get caught out. The Vianden chairlift runs only from spring to mid-October. The Family of Man at Clervaux Castle ended its 2026 season on 1 January 2027. Echternach’s Roman villa doesn’t reopen until 27 March, and the museum at Mersch Castle is by appointment only.
Plenty is open, though, especially in town. The capital’s museums don’t follow the seasons, and January is, for me, the best month to see them without queues. Start with museums in Luxembourg and ride the tram between them for free. Beyond the city, Vianden Castle was opening from 10:00 to 17:00 from October 2026, and Visit Luxembourg lists an indoor ice rink at Kockelscheuer, just south of the capital, if you fancy skating.
Getting there when the days are short
Flying into Findel keeps things simple, because the tram runs from the airport straight into town. Luxair publishes a London City route and the airport lists British Airways, easyJet and Ryanair among its airlines, though I’d check what’s actually flying in January before settling on dates. The train through Brussels or Paris is the other option. As a British traveller you’re outside Schengen, so the EES biometric check applies at the border, and your passport needs to be under ten years old with three months left after you leave.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Luxembourg for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
Moselle wine, and Christmas trees for the bonfires
January isn’t dead on the Moselle. Wineries join Wine Cheese Enjoy, which Visit Moselle runs across January and February, and it’s a pleasant excuse for a day out to Remich or Grevenmacher. In 2026 the vineyards between Wormeldange and Ahn were also lit up on 30 and 31 January for Wine Lights Enjoy, a walk of about 5 km with tastings along the way, though no 2027 date had been announced by late September 2026. The rest of the wine calendar is in Luxembourg wine festivals.
One quieter custom is worth knowing. According to the government portal, local groups collect used Christmas trees in January, and they end up weeks later on the bonfires of the Buergbrennen.
My own January plan would be two or three nights in the capital, somewhere central so the car can stay at home. A museum or the casemates in the morning, a short walk before the light goes around teatime and an early dinner. If the weather relents, one day out to the Moselle for the tastings. Long walks in the Mullerthal or the Éislek I’d leave for spring. If you can stretch the trip to Tuesday 2 February 2027, at dusk you’ll see children with lanterns going round the neighbourhoods for Liichtmëssdag in Luxembourg.
If you’re coming straight from the festivities, see Luxembourg in December. If you can wait a few weeks, Luxembourg in February brings carnival. The whole season is covered in Luxembourg in winter, and to weigh January against the rest of the year, read the best time to visit Luxembourg.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Luxembourg on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.

Frequently asked questions
What's the weather like in Luxembourg in January?
Cold, damp and dim. Findel averages 1.4°C, the lowest of the year, and STATEC puts the city's average high at 4.7°C and low at −1.0°C. Expect fog on about ten days and just 52 hours of sunshine across the whole month.
Are the Christmas markets still open in January?
Only at the very start. Winterlights, with markets on Place d'Armes, Place de la Constitution, Place de Paris and Place Guillaume II, runs until Sunday 3 January 2027, according to the City of Luxembourg.
Is anything open on New Year's Day in Luxembourg?
Shops must close by law, apart from bakeries, butchers, patisseries and tea rooms, which may open from 5:00 to 19:00. Restaurants, bars, hotels and shops at stations and the airport aren't covered by the ban, according to guichet.lu.
Does it snow in Luxembourg in January?
It can, but there's no official count of snow days. MeteoLux does publish black ice, which turns up on 1.3 days in an average January. If you hire a car, winter tyres are compulsory in icy or snowy conditions.
Is January a good time to visit Luxembourg?
For a city break built around museums, yes, and quieter than any other month. For walking in the Mullerthal or touring castles in the north, no, because daylight is short and several seasonal sights are closed.
Can I fly to Luxembourg from the UK in January?
Luxair publishes a London City route and the airport lists airlines such as British Airways, easyJet and Ryanair, but check schedules yourself. You'll go through the EU's EES biometric check at Findel, and your passport must be under ten years old with three months left after you leave.
