Ardennes and Mullerthal, by tent or motorhome
Camping in Luxembourg, where the tent beats the hotel
Luxembourg had 64 campsites with 32,140 places in 2025 according to STATEC, almost twice as many as all its hotels put together. The Ardennes have 37 and the Mullerthal 19; the Moselle has just two. Wild camping isn't allowed, says visitluxembourg, and in high season it's worth booking. A pitch at the youth hostel network's campsite by the Sûre costs from €10 with a card.

- Luxembourg had 64 campsites with 32,140 places in 2025, almost twice its hotel capacity.
- The Ardennes and the Mullerthal hold 56 of the 64 campsites.
- Wild camping isn't allowed; book ahead in summer.
- Toodlermillen charges €10 a pitch and €8 per adult with a card, as of September 2026.
If you enjoy camping, Luxembourg is one of the few countries where I'd put it ahead of a hotel. There are more places, they're in the loveliest parts of the north and the Mullerthal, and the free buses get you out and about without moving the car.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
The Mullerthal sleeps under canvas
The region had 19 campsites with 12,477 places in 2025, against 893 hotel beds. Many sit right by the Mullerthal Trail routes.

02 Watch out
No pitching wherever you fancy
visitluxembourg is clear that wild camping isn't allowed in Luxembourg. Use a campsite or a designated motorhome area.

The youth hostel network's campsite
Toodlermillen, by the Sûre near Esch-sur-Sûre, charges €10 a pitch and €8 per adult with a card, as of September 2026. It has three quick-stop motorhome pitches at €7 a night.

04 My tip
There's camping in the capital too
Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette both have their own campsite. STATEC counted one in the capital with 580 places in 2025.
Luxembourg free public transport
What I would book
- Places to stayBooking.com Lodges and holiday homes in Clervaux Together with Bourscheid, the commune with the most campsites. If you're not bringing a tent, look here for houses or lodges.
- Places to stayBooking.com Places to stay in Echternach, by the Mullerthal For camping country. If the weather turns, a night indoors here can rescue the walk.
One figure sums up outdoor holidays in Luxembourg better than any brochure. In 2025 STATEC counted 32,140 camping places and 16,880 hotel beds. The country has almost twice as much room for tents, caravans and lodges as it has hotel rooms, and that changes how you plan a trip to the north or to the Mullerthal rocks.
Where the campsites are
The short answer is up and to the right on the map. Of the 64 campsites STATEC counted in 2025, 37 were in its Ardennes region, with 16,473 places, and 19 in the Mullerthal, with 12,477. The rest barely registers, which tells you where the landscape that campers come for really is. Five in the capital and its surroundings, two on the Moselle and one in the south. By commune, Clervaux and Bourscheid had five each, and Vianden, Echternach and Beaufort three.
A year earlier there were 67 campsites and 37,621 places, so supply has dipped a little. Even so, in the Mullerthal camping places outnumber hotel beds fourteen to one, 12,477 against 893. There, camping isn’t the budget alternative, it’s the normal way to stay; I cover it in Mullerthal hotels.
Who camps in Luxembourg?
The figures for nights by country of residence tell the story well. In 2025 residents of the Netherlands spent 985,870 nights in Luxembourg’s tourist accommodation, and only 193,059 of them in hotels. It’s the only large market where hotels are in the minority, which fits with campsites recording 1,262,464 nights that year. UK residents, by contrast, spent 142,903 nights, 106,751 of them in hotels. So for most British visitors, Luxembourg’s campsites remain largely undiscovered, which I think is a shame, because the best ones are exactly where hotels are thin on the ground.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Clervaux for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
The rules that matter
The first, and the one people ask about most, is that wild camping isn’t allowed in Luxembourg, according to visitluxembourg. Not in the woods, not by a lake, not in a car park with the motorhome. You need a campsite or a designated area.
The second is that in July and August it’s worth booking, as the national tourist board recommends. And the third is that many campsites are no longer just pitches. visitluxembourg suggests renting a chalet, a pod or a safari tent if you don’t bring your own, and talks of glamping at four-star sites.
A campsite with published prices
Hardly any campsite publishes rates through an official source, but one does. Toodlermillen belongs to the youth hostel network, sits in a valley by the Sûre near Esch-sur-Sûre and the Upper Sûre lake, and has 120 pitches. As of September 2026, a pitch costs €10 with a Hostelling International card and €12 without; each adult €8 or €10; children aged 3 to 12 €5 or €7; and electricity €5 a night. There are three quick-stop motorhome pitches for two nights at most, at €7 with a card.
The rules are family-campsite rules. Barrier closed 10pm to 8am, quiet hours 10pm to 7am, six people per pitch at most and two dogs per pitch at €4 each. Hook-ups are 6 amps, and a CEE adapter can be borrowed against a deposit, which is handy if you’ve come over with British plugs. For the 2027 season it’s preparing an area with holiday lodgings. The lake setting is covered in Upper Sûre lake.

Vianden and Echternach, the two people ask about
In Vianden, the two campsites with visitluxembourg listings are on route de Bettel, on the banks of the Our. Vianden Castle Camp, at number 5, has 150 pitches, some by the river, and opens from 6 April to 31 October; in October 2026 its listing gave €29 a pitch per night. Camping de l’Our, at number 3, has 120 pitches of at least 100 m² and opens from 1 April to 1 October. Both leave the town and castle a short walk away; the rest of Vianden is in its own guide.
In Echternach, the Camping Officiel is at 17 route de Diekirch, about ten minutes from the centre, on terraces between the Sûre and the rocks. It has a swimming pool, playgrounds, Finnish kotas, sleeping barrels and chalets to rent, and the Wolfsschlucht on Route 2 of the Mullerthal Trail is a few minutes away. For walkers without a car, I think it’s the best-placed campsite in the region.
Camping in the capital
Few people realise that Luxembourg City has its own campsite, as does Esch-sur-Alzette, according to visitluxembourg. STATEC counted one in the capital in 2025, with 580 places. With free trams and buses, sleeping under canvas and exploring the UNESCO-listed old town is entirely doable without buying a ticket.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Clervaux on GetYourGuide.
How I’d plan it
For a week with a tent or motorhome, three nights in the Mullerthal to walk the rocks and three up north around Clervaux, Vianden and the Upper Sûre. From any of them, the free buses take you to the trails and villages without moving your vehicle. If you’re travelling with a dog, a campsite is actually a better bet than a hostel, which won’t let dogs inside; there’s more in Luxembourg with a dog.
And if one day brings more rain than you bargained for, there’s always a night under a roof. The low-cost options are in cheap hotels in Luxembourg.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
