- Käerjeng has 11,343 residents in five localities, led by Bascharage and Clemency.
- It's the only Minett biosphere commune in the canton of Capellen.
- Bascharage has the Bofferding brewery and the Minett Trail starts in Clemency.
- Trains call at Bascharage-Sanem station, free within Luxembourg.
I'd come to Käerjeng for two very specific reasons, the brewery tour in Bascharage or the first stage of the Minett Trail, which sets off from Clemency. If neither appeals, there are places in the Minett with more to see.
Before you go
What I would keep in mind
-
01 Worth the splurge
The national brewery
The Brasserie Nationale, home of Bofferding and Battin, is in Bascharage and shows off its brewhouse and museum on a tour of about two hours ending with a tasting.
Bascharage -
02 Most beautiful
The Clemency ponds
Set among meadows and woodland, with a trout farm and a café. A day's fishing permit costs between €10 and €21 depending on the pond.

03 My tip
Where the Minett Trail begins
The 90 km, ten-stage trail across the south sets off from Clemency towards Esch, then splits into two branches for Bettembourg and Dudelange.

04 Getting there
Trains at Bascharage
Bascharage-Sanem station is on the CFL line from the capital to Rodange, free in second class within Luxembourg.
What I would book
Käerjeng is a commune with a Luxembourgish name and villages with French ones, which already tells you something about the south of the country. It’s made up of Bascharage, Clemency, Fingig, Hautcharage and Linger, and although it sits administratively in the canton of Capellen, it’s one of the eleven communes of the Minett biosphere reserve.
Five localities with a long history
STATEC’s register gave Käerjeng 11,343 residents at the start of 2026. The history the commune publishes starts a long way back. In the 1990s a Gaulish burial chamber came to light at Clemency, 4.3 by 4.2 metres and dated to around 70 BC, which the commune describes as the largest known in the Gaulish world.
Later, on 4 April 1281, Bascharage, together with Linger, Hautcharage and Pétange, won its charter of liberties under the Law of Beaumont. Clemency’s probably dates from 1260. Under the French, between 1794 and 1815, the area became a cantonal municipality based at Bascharage, and in 1799 a mairie was set up grouping Bascharage, Hautcharage and Linger. Its first mayor, in 1800, was Pierre Clement.
Bascharage and its beer
The best-known locality is Bascharage, above all for the national brewery, where Bofferding and Battin are made. It runs guided tours of about two hours, with a museum and a tasting at the end, and in summer there’s a fixed Saturday tour. Bascharage is also the home town of the sculptor Claus Cito, who made the Gëlle Fra in the capital. If beer is your thing, the guide to Luxembourg beer puts it in context.

Clemency, fishing ponds and the start of the Minett Trail
Clemency is the rural side of the commune. Its ponds, set among meadows and woods, have a trout farm and local fish such as roach and carp, plus a café with a short menu. A day’s fishing permit costs between €10 and €21 depending on the pond, and they open from mid-January to mid-November. Even if you don’t fish, visitluxembourg suggests them for a stroll, with the Attert cycle track and the Clemency walking circuit close by.
A few things worth knowing before you go. The ponds are at 66 rue de Grass and, in the week of 3 October 2026, opened from 7am to 9pm every day except Thursday. Groups can hire a whole pond with trout stocked for them. And the Clemency walking circuit, waymarked with a blue diamond on white in both directions, starts by the village’s old station, which no longer sees trains and is now an inn. The Clemency, Schwemm bus stop links it with Esch-sur-Alzette and Pétange.
Clemency is also where the Minett Trail begins, a 90 km route in ten stages heading for Esch, where it forks, one branch towards Bettembourg and the other towards Dudelange. Walkers can split it into stages and sleep in the trail’s own huts, so no car is needed.
Walks and getting there
visitluxembourg publishes two walking circuits in the commune, Bascharage’s 8.68 km loop from the Op Acker car park and Clemency’s 8.46 km loop from St Maximin’s chapel. There’s also a station-to-station walk from Bascharage-Sanem to Dippach-Reckange, 10.14 km long. Without a car, head for Bascharage-Sanem station, served from Luxembourg City by trains that cost nothing in second class.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Esch-sur-Alzette on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
