Canton of Vianden, on the River Our
Vianden, a small town living in the shadow of its castle
Vianden (Veianen) is one of Luxembourg's twelve places with town status and the smallest of them, with 2,243 residents on 1 January 2026. It sits in the Our valley on the German border, about 50 km north of the capital, with the castle that impresses me most in the north, the country's only chairlift and the house where Victor Hugo stayed in 1871.

Full read: 6 min
- Vianden has 2,243 residents and is the smallest town with town status in Luxembourg.
- The castle opens 10am to 5pm from 1 October and costs €13.
- The chairlift, the only one in the country, runs from 4 April to 19 October 2026.
- There's no railway; a bus runs from Diekirch, free within Luxembourg.
- The nut market is on the second Sunday of October, which is 11 October in 2026.
You can do Vianden in a day, but I'd do it the other way round from most visitors. Castle first thing, then walk down the Grand-Rue, and save the chairlift for the afternoon, when the light falls straight on the walls. If I can, I stay the night down by the bridge.

01 Most beautiful
The castle from the Victor Hugo bridge
visitluxembourg names the Grand-Rue and the bridge with the writer's statue as the favourite photo spots. From the bridge you get river, houses and fortress in one frame.

02 To save money
Four free visits with the LuxembourgPass
The castle, the chairlift (return), the Victor Hugo House and the town history museum are all free with the pass. The castle and chairlift alone come to €22.50 per adult.

04 My tip
Second Sunday in October, go early
The nut market, the Veiner Nëssmoort, draws up to 20,000 people according to visitluxembourg. In 2026 it falls on 11 October, with park-and-ride car parks and free shuttles.
What I would book
Vianden is one of those places that looks made for a postcard and still holds up when you get close. STATEC recorded 2,243 residents on 1 January 2026; it has a single locality in the whole commune and a history that runs through the counts of Vianden, the House of Nassau, Victor Hugo and the national poet Edmond de la Fontaine, better known as Dicks. What I like most is the scale. Everything worth seeing is on foot, between the river and the hill.
A border town with the Our at its feet
The Our is the border with Germany, and here it’s a curious one. Luxembourg’s official portal explains that the river is a condominium shared by the two states and that, just before Vianden, the left bank encloses a Luxembourg enclave covering much of the town. Cross the bridge and you’re in the German Eifel.
That border mattered a great deal in the war. Liberation Route Europe, the network of remembrance trails of the liberation, records that after the Americans arrived in September 1944 the town had an armed resistance group, the Veiner Miliz, which escorted patrols and guarded the bridges over the Our. On 19 November 1944 it held off an attack by more than 120 Germans, who pulled back after several hours of fighting. That is what people search for as the battle of Vianden. A month later the German winter offensive began, which I cover in full under Battle of the Bulge in Luxembourg, after which Vianden became the final Luxembourg town liberated.
The town stretches along the river with the castle watching from above. visitluxembourg singles out its narrow lanes, the town wall with its defensive towers, the Trinitarian church and the summer medieval festival. I’d add something the leaflets skip, which is how much better the place makes sense if you walk it from top to bottom, castle to river.
What I’d see, and in which order
Start with Vianden Castle. It was built between the 11th and 14th centuries on the foundations of a Roman fort and a Carolingian refuge, belonged for a long time to the grand ducal family and passed to the state in 1977. It opens at 10am and, from 1 October, closes at 5pm. An adult ticket is €13.
Then head down the Grand-Rue to the Trinitarian church. It dates from 1248, with a large choir added in 1644 and a rococo high altar of 1758 by Michel Weiler. Next door are the old cloister and the recumbent effigy of Marie de Spanheim, who died in 1400, the last descendant of the counts of Vianden. It’s open daily from 9am to 7pm and costs nothing.
Plenty of people arrive asking about Blessed Yolanda of Vianden, so let me save you a search, because her story isn’t told in the town. She was a countess of the family and, according to the National Institute for Heritage’s leaflet, entered the convent of Marienthal against her parents’ wishes; it was founded in 1232 in the Eisch valley, in what is now the commune of Helperknapp. visitluxembourg adds that she arrived there in 1258, became prioress and had a church and a library built. If she’s the reason for your trip, head to Marienthal, now a state youth centre that can be seen on a guided tour.
On the same street, at number 96-98, the town history museum fills an old merchant’s house. It shows how people lived here in the 18th and 19th centuries, and houses a bakery museum and another devoted to Dicks, who lived and worked in Vianden.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Vianden for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
Is the chairlift worth it?
Yes, especially with children. The Vianden chairlift is Luxembourg’s only one and climbs over the Our to a terrace looking across to the castle, the valley and the town. It runs between 4 April and 19 October in 2026, and an adult return costs €9.50. At the top you can ride back down or walk through the woods, passing the castle and the old town on the way.
By the bridge stands the Victor Hugo House in Vianden, the literary museum recalling his stays between 1862 and 1871. Entry is €6, free for anyone up to 25, and it’s shut on Mondays.
Beyond the old town
With an afternoon to spare, two walks are well worth it. One goes to the Bildchen chapel, built in 1848 at a pilgrimage spot above the reservoir of the hydroelectric plant. The other is the Ourdall, 8.5 km upriver to Stolzembourg with ten themed stops along the way, which the official portal lists among the routes of the Our Nature Park.
The SEO pumped-storage plant, which visitluxembourg ranks among the most important in Europe, is best seen from above at the upper reservoir, open to visitors at any time. In 2023 a reverse graffiti of the faces of the workers who built the Vianden dam was cleaned into its wall.
For a waymarked loop, visitluxembourg lists the Auto-Pédestre Vianden circuit, 7.96 km, about 2 hours 50 minutes and 330 m of total climbing, graded medium. It starts at the car park on rue du Vieux Marché, on the way out towards Bivels, climbs to the castle and the Zollstack, passes the chairlift’s top station and drops back to the Our by the Bildchen chapel. In October 2026 one stretch was closed for works with a diversion marked in green, so check the map before setting off. The long-distance routes, stage by stage, are in my guide to hiking in Luxembourg.
With a car and another half day, I’d go to the Molberlee, near Hoscheid. It’s a rocky ridge above the Schlinder valley, a nature reserve and protected landscape, reachable only on foot via local trail PH 2, the Éislek Pad Hoscheid or the Lee Trail stage I describe under the Escapardenne. The name combines «Lee», Luxembourgish for an isolated rock, with «Molbier», the bilberry.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Vianden for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
Vianden and Echternach on the same day
It’s a pairing people search for a lot, and by car it works. I’d go into the castle at 10am when it opens, walk down the Grand-Rue, have lunch in Vianden and leave the afternoon for the basilica and the market square of Echternach, which take two or three hours at an easy pace. The chairlift and the Victor Hugo House would have to go; if you don’t want to drop them, Echternach deserves its own day. I wouldn’t try it by public transport, as you’d be stringing several buses together and the day disappears in waiting.
When to go, and when not to
Summer brings more people and the castle’s medieval festival, with free shuttle buses on both weekends from 12pm to 7pm. The LuxembourgPass isn’t valid during the festival. Autumn belongs to the Veiner Nëssmoort, the nut market on the second Sunday of October. In 2026 it’s on 11 October, and visitluxembourg talks of up to 20,000 visitors. I’d happily go, knowing that on that day neither the castle nor the Grand-Rue are for taking things slowly.
The rest of the year, the town is far more enjoyable early in the morning. If you want to stay, I’ve gone through the hotels in Vianden, and to place the town in its region, see the guide to the Luxembourg Ardennes.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Vianden on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.

Frequently asked questions
What is there to see in Vianden?
The castle, built between the 11th and 14th centuries, the Grand-Rue, the Gothic Trinitarian church, the Victor Hugo House and the chairlift up to the viewpoint. One day covers it; with two, add the Our valley walk to Stolzembourg.
How do I get to Vianden from Luxembourg City?
By car it's about 50 km north. Without one, take the train to Diekirch on line 10 and the direct bus to Vianden, as visitluxembourg describes. Public transport is free within Luxembourg; timetables are on mobiliteit.lu.
Is Vianden worth visiting?
For me it's the most complete town in northern Luxembourg. You get the castle that impresses me most in the country, a walled medieval centre with towers and walks along the Our, all within walking distance.
How much is Vianden Castle?
An adult ticket is €13, students aged 13 to 25 with a card pay €7 and children aged 6 to 12 pay €4, according to visitluxembourg. It's free with the LuxembourgPass, except during the medieval festival.
When is the Vianden nut market?
The Veiner Nëssmoort takes place every year on the second Sunday of October. In 2026 that's 11 October, with a shuttle bus from Ettelbruck every 15 minutes and car parks served by free buses.
Is Vianden in Germany or Luxembourg?
Luxembourg. The Our forms the border with Germany, and the country's official portal notes that just before Vianden the left bank encloses a Luxembourg enclave taking in much of the town.
Can you see Vianden and Echternach in one day?
By car, yes, as long as you accept leaving things out. I'd do Vianden Castle in the morning, from 10am, and Echternach in the afternoon, with the basilica and the old centre. The chairlift and the Victor Hugo House won't fit. I wouldn't attempt it by bus, since it means connecting several lines; timetables are on mobiliteit.lu.
Who was Blessed Yolanda of Vianden?
A countess of Vianden who entered the convent of Marienthal, in the Eisch valley, against her parents' wishes. visitluxembourg says she arrived there in 1258, became prioress and had a church and a library built. Her trail is in Marienthal rather than Vianden.
