Useldange, a village gathered below its castle

Useldange is a commune in the canton of Redange with 2,181 residents on 1 January 2026, straddling the River Attert. In the middle of the village, on a rock, stand the ruins of its feudal castle, which you can explore for free. It holds a large medieval festival every June and has a tourist office, e-bike hire and a gliding airfield.

  • Useldange has 2,181 residents on the River Attert, in the canton of Redange.
  • Its castle ruins are free to visit, with an accessible 16-stop trail.
  • A big medieval festival takes place every June.
  • There's no train; come by car or bus.

Useldange is the best day base in the western Guttland if you're on a bike. I'd start at the tourist office, climb up to the castle, which costs nothing, and pedal off towards the Saeul oak.

    E-bikes at the tourist office

Tourist Info Wëlle Westen, opposite the castle, has an e-bike hire and charging station, according to the Guttland regional tourist office.

    A medieval festival every June

The Guttland tourist office says the village's big medieval festival, with entertainment and crafts, draws crowds below the castle every June.

The commune’s website sums it up in one line. On a rock in the middle of the village, it says, stand the ruins of a feudal castle, and that’s still the first thing you notice as you drive in. Useldange revolves around that rock and around the River Attert, which splits it in two, and it has found more ways to make the most of them than you’d expect from a place of 2,181 people. Close by, at Reimberg in Préizerdaul, the Siwe Brécke-Wee sets off, a 5.15 km loop past ponds and wooden footbridges.

The castle, free and accessible

Useldange Castle is the main sight, and it costs nothing if you go on your own. There’s a tower with an exhibition on medieval life and a sixteen-stop trail adapted for blind and partially sighted visitors. The Wëlle Westen tourist office stands opposite, and next door the old watermill is now ManuKultura, a centre running creative workshops for children and adults.

The Guttland regional tourist office says the village stages a large medieval festival every June, with entertainment and crafts. No 2027 date has been published, so I’d look it up in the spring.

What else is in the commune?

More than you’d think. In Everlange, one of its four localities, caving enthusiasts have set up a museum that the regional office recommends. There’s a gliding airfield with a flying school just outside the village, and the Useldange pond and the Everlange bridge feature among the canton’s list of hidden corners worth a detour. For a proper destination in the canton, the Colpach sculpture park in Ell is open every day of the year. The regional office also mentions a hotel and brasserie built on ecological lines, with round mushroom-shaped cabins by the Attert. In the same canton, Beckerich has another restored mill, the Kulturmillen, with an energy museum and a brasserie.

The Everlange bridge has its own visitluxembourg page among the Hidden Treasures of the canton of Redange, little-known places picked by local residents. It’s a small bridge over the village stream, and the page suggests reaching it on the Useldange circular walk, which passes through Everlange, and coming in spring, when the water runs high and the trees are in blossom. I’d treat it as a stop on a walk rather than a destination.

With children, the elves’ trail leaves from the tourist office and loops through the village in under 3 km with twelve stops; pick up the leaflet with the route, as it isn’t waymarked.

Rippweiler, another of the localities, once had a Roman villa. Finds from the site are kept in the small museum in neighbouring Vichten, which you can visit on a booked tour, according to the regional office. It makes a neat morning, the medieval castle here and the Roman mosaic there.

By bike from the castle

For me, Useldange really shines as a starting point on two wheels. The tourist office hires out and charges e-bikes, and the government portal lists the castle as the start of several gentle routes, one of 16.62 km along the streams running down to the Attert and one of 13.43 km out to the oldest oak in the country, in Saeul. There are more ideas under cycling in Luxembourg.

Getting there

Useldange has no railway station. Drive in on the N24 or N22, or catch an RGTR bus, which costs nothing, after checking times on mobiliteit.lu. It belongs to the canton of Redange, whose main town lies to the west, following the Attert upstream.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
