Munshausen, draught horses, country crafts and a lords' burial chapel

Munshausen (Munzen) is a village of 277 people in the commune of Clervaux, northern Luxembourg. Most visitors know it for the Robbesscheier, a 6-hectare nature and crafts centre with Ardennes draught horses, but it also has St Hubert's Church, where the lords of Clervaux are buried.

  • Munshausen is a village of 277 people in the commune of Clervaux.
  • The Robbesscheier runs rural workshops with Ardennes horses for €24 a full day.
  • The lords of Clervaux are buried at St Hubert's Church.
  • The first stage of the Éislek Trail runs through the village.

If you're touring the north with children, the Robbesscheier is where I'd spend the day, because here they touch, knead and ride rather than look. Without kids, I'd come for St Hubert's Church and the Irbich valley walk, then eat at the centre's restaurant.

Half a day free with the LuxembourgPass

The Robbesscheier gives a free half-day of workshops with the pass and 30% off the full day, which otherwise costs €24 a head.

Where the lords of Clervaux lie

The burial chapel built onto St Hubert's Church, known locally as the «Cliärrwer Kapell», holds the lords of Clervaux, whose parish church this was for centuries.

  3. 03 My tip

    Book before you turn up

Family workshops at the Robbesscheier must be booked by phone or online form. The full day runs 10.20am to 4.30pm; half days run 9.30am to noon or 2pm to 4.30pm.

  4. 04 Getting there

A stage of the Éislek Trail

The first stage of the Éislek Trail, from Kautenbach to Clervaux, passes through Munshausen before following the Woltz valley.

What I would book

Munshausen is one of those villages people know for a single place rather than for its name. It has 277 residents according to the commune of Clervaux, and a long pedigree, first appearing in writing in 839 as Muniheistati. It was a commune in its own right until 5 December 2011, when it merged with Clervaux and Heinerscheid.

The Robbesscheier, a whole day of old trades

The Robbesscheier began just over thirty years ago, when the village’s young people turned the old pigsty of the «Ferme de Robert» into a café. The Ardennes draught horses followed, then carriage rides, the old bakery, the vegetable gardens and a holiday house. Today it covers 6 hectares, employs around 50 people and keeps 14 draught horses that pull the carriages, haul timber out of the woods and work the garden.

Visits are built around workshops led by staff. There’s blacksmithing, the sawmill, wool, beeswax candles, pottery, baking, donkey rides and feeding the animals. The full day, 10.20am to 4.30pm, includes five activities for €24 a head; the half day covers three for €20. Under 2s are free and booking is always required. With the LuxembourgPass the half day is free and the full day is 30% off. For families, I’d rank it among the best things in the north, because nothing here is behind a rope.

St Hubert and the lords of Clervaux

The other reason to stop is the church. For centuries Munshausen was the parish seat of the lords of Clervaux, and the parish took in Clervaux, Marnach, Roder, Reuler, Fischbach, Grindhausen, Urspelt, Neidhausen and Bockholtz. The lords are buried in the tomb chapel attached to the nave of St Hubert’s Church, known as the «Cliärrwer Kapell».

visitluxembourg describes it as a typical Éislek church built for the harsh Ardennes climate, on the site of a pagan place of worship. It has a low, squat nave, a tall Gothic choir, a slender but fortress-like tower and the counts’ crypt chapel. In late September 2026 it was open from 10am until 6pm.

Walking the Irbich valley

The Munshausen auto-pédestre walk leaves from the village centre at 1 Frummeschgaass, drops into the Irbich valley almost as far as Drauffelt and returns along the same valley to the Schofsbréck, the sheep bridge. It’s 8.68 km and about two hours forty. The first stage of the Éislek Trail, Kautenbach to Clervaux, also runs through the village, one of the two halves of the Escapardenne. All of it lies within the Our Nature Park.

Eating and sleeping in the village

The Robbesscheier’s restaurant cooks with produce from its own gardens, meat partly from its own animals and the rest from nearby farms, and serves both indoors and on the terrace. The centre also hosts two gatherings it organises itself, the St Hubert market and a draught horse day, with no 2027 dates published yet. For a bed, the Robbesscheier has a holiday house and full-board stays; if you’d rather a hotel, base yourself in Clervaux, a short hop by bus, car or train from Drauffelt.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
