An articulated city bus on route 18 to Kirchberg, in a colourful livery, on a street lined with trees

Tram T1, buses 16 and 29, and taxis

Luxembourg airport to the city centre without paying a penny

From Luxembourg airport to the city centre you travel free on tram T1, which has reached the terminal since 2 March 2025, or on buses 16 and 29, every 10 to 15 minutes. The central station is 10 km away and visitluxembourg puts the centre about 20 minutes away by bus. Taxis have no fixed fare, so ask first.

  • From Luxembourg airport to the centre you travel free by tram (T1) or bus (16 and 29).
  • Buses 16 and 29 run every 10 to 15 minutes, and the 29 stops at the central station.
  • The station is 10 km away; the bus takes about 20 minutes to the centre.
  • Taxis have no fixed fare, so ask first and check the rate per kilometre.

I'd take the tram if I were staying in Kirchberg, the old town or by the station, and bus 29 for a hotel in the Gare district. I'd keep taxis for very late arrivals or when you're loaded down with bags.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 To save money

Free, with no ticket to buy

Since 1 March 2020 public transport in Luxembourg has been free for everyone, visitors included, on buses, trams and second-class trains. There's no ticket to buy or validate at the airport.

    Luxembourg free public transport
  2. 02 Getting there

Bus 29 stops at the central station

Bus 29 runs from the airport towards Hesperange via the Gare Centrale and Howald. If your hotel is in the station district, it's the most direct ride.

    Luxembourg railway station
  3. 03 Watch out

    Taxi fares aren't fixed

visitluxembourg says taxi prices are unregulated. The UK government advises using official ranks, checking the rate per kilometre before you get in and expecting a surcharge at night and on Sundays.

  4. 04 My tip

Heading to Trier? Take the 302

Bus 302 links Trier in Germany with the airport and Howald via Wasserbillig. It's free inside Luxembourg, but the German section isn't covered by the free travel scheme.

What I would book

In most capitals this is a journey you pay for. In Luxembourg you don’t. Public transport has been free for everyone since 1 March 2020, visitors included, and that covers the tram and buses that leave from outside the terminal. There’s no ticket to buy and nothing to tap, you just get on. Routes and airlines are covered in flights to Luxembourg.

Tram T1, the one I’d use

Line T1 has run to the airport since 2 March 2025. It’s 16 km long with 24 stops, running from the terminal to Stadion at the Cloche d’Or, and transports.public.lu says trams come every 3 to 8 minutes along the line. On the way it crosses Kirchberg, with stops such as Luxexpo, Philharmonie / Mudam and the European Parliament, goes over the red bridge into town, calls at Étoile and at Hamilius in the old town, and carries on to the central station.

I think it’s the best option if you’re staying in Kirchberg, the centre or by the station, because it gets you close to almost everything without changing. The trams are low-floor, with room for 420 passengers, so luggage isn’t a problem. Everything about the line is in Luxembourg tram.

Buses 16 and 29, every few minutes

The airport operator says lines 16 and 29 run to the centre every 10 to 15 minutes, and visitluxembourg reckons on about 20 minutes by bus. On the routes the airport shows with mobiliteit.lu data, the 16 heads to Bertrange via Kirchberg hospital and Étoile, while the 29 heads to Hesperange via the Gare Centrale and Howald. If your hotel is in the station district, the 29 drops you there with no change.

Bus 6 also stops at the airport on its way to Bertrange via Kirchberg and Hamilius, as does the 302, which links Trier in Germany with the airport and Howald via Wasserbillig. For anywhere else, the official journey planner is mobiliteit.lu, and the rest of the network is in Luxembourg buses.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxemburgo before prices climb.

What about taxis?

There’s a rank in front of the terminal, and pre-booked taxis pick up from the Kiss & Fly, car park C. What there isn’t is a fixed fare. visitluxembourg is clear that prices are unregulated and you should ask before setting off. The UK government adds that official ranks are safer, that official taxis display a price list, that you should check the rate per kilometre because some charge inflated prices, and that drivers can add a surcharge in the evening and on Sundays.

If you have reduced mobility, the airport offers assistance and confirms it covers transport to and from the terminal, and transports.public.lu describes the trams as low-floor and accessible. With a wheelchair I’d pick the tram over the bus for the level boarding and the extra space.

With free transport every few minutes, I’d only take a taxi with a lot of luggage, with small children, or on a flight that lands after the buses have stopped.

Where to get off for your hotel

For the old town, get off the tram at Hamilius, which is its stop. For the station, both the tram and bus 29 stop at the Gare Centrale. In Kirchberg, the tram has several stops along the main boulevard. If you’re sleeping near the airport for an early flight, ask the hotel how to reach the terminal before you book. If you haven’t picked a base yet, where to stay in Luxembourg compares the areas.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxemburgo before prices climb.

Going back to the airport

The return trip is just as simple and just as free. If you’re on an early Luxair flight, between 06:00 and 09:00, you can even ride out the evening before, drop your bag between 19:30 and 22:30, and come back in the morning with only hand luggage. Leave a good margin, though, because the operator recommends being at the airport two hours before your flight, and the UK government warns that the Entry/Exit System can slow down departures from Schengen. Remember, too, that there’s no left luggage at the airport. To enjoy your last day without a case, leave it at the paid service in the central station and collect it on your way to the tram. The rest of the terminal is covered in Luxembourg airport.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Luxemburgo and choose by the reviews.
