Redange-sur-Attert town hall, a house with a pink façade, entrance steps and a fountain on the square in front

Redange-sur-Attert has been the main town of the canton of Redange since 1841, with 3,149 residents on 1 January 2026 across seven localities. It celebrates its river bogeyman, the Kropemann, with a monument and a festival on the last Sunday of September, and has a shared swimming pool, the Um Hounig leisure area and the old Niederpallen station, now an open-air museum.

  • Redange-sur-Attert has been the canton's main town since 1841.
  • It has 3,149 residents across seven localities.
  • Its mascot is the Kropemann, with a festival on the last Sunday of September.
  • At Niederpallen an old station is now an open-air railway museum.

Redange is one for cyclists or families in summer. I'd find the Kropemann statue outside the town hall, ride the Jhangeli West Tour to the old Niederpallen station and finish in the pool.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    The Kropemann, the Attert's bogeyman

Legend has him lurking in the water with a hook, ready to grab children who stray too close to the bank. He has a monument, a statue and a festival.

  2. 02 To save money

Free pool entry with the LuxembourgPass

The Réidener Schwämm shared swimming pool is listed on visitguttland as free with the LuxembourgPass.

  3. 03 Getting there

    Three cycle routes

Redange is the start of the 36 km Wisen West Tour and a stop on the Dällchen West Tour and the family-friendly Jhangeli West Tour.

    cycling in Luxembourg

Every village has its bogeyman, and Redange’s has a name, a statue and a festival. The Kropemann, says the Guttland regional tourist office, lurks in the water with a hook to catch children who stray too close to the bank, and the town honours him with a devotion I find one of the most likeable quirks of western Luxembourg.

The Kropemann and his festival

There’s a monument to him outside the town hall and a wooden sculpture too, and every year, on the last Sunday of September, the town throws him a big party. The 2026 one has just been, and the 2027 programme hasn’t been published, so look on visitguttland.lu around the summer.

Since the Kropemann sticks to the Attert, the regional office jokes that you can swim in peace at the shared pool, the Réidener Schwämm, which is free with the LuxembourgPass. He can’t reach the fishing pond at the other end of town either, nor the lake at Um Hounig, a leisure area linked to Ell by a woodchip path.

A canton capital with a past

Redange hasn’t always run its canton. The commune’s website explains that the canton of Ospern was created under the French Département des Forêts at the end of the 18th century, and that an ordinance of 12 October 1841 made Redange the capital in Ospern’s place. Its coat of arms, based on a late version of the arms of the lords of Useldange, was approved by the council in December 1988.

Which cycle routes start here?

Three, according to the regional office. Redange is the start of the Wisen West Tour, 36 km for seasoned riders, and a highlight of the Dällchen West Tour, of medium difficulty. The third, the Jhangeli West Tour, partly follows the route of a legendary narrow-gauge train and is ideal for families. At Niederpallen it passes the Jhangelis Gare, the old station of the local railway, now a museum about the Noerdange-Martelange line (Noerdange belongs to neighbouring Beckerich), which closed in 1953, with a locomotive and a period carriage on display. You can see the outside at any time.

Who is Redange for?

Not for monument hunters, because there aren’t any to speak of. It is for families in summer, who get a pool, water and a legend to scare the children with, and for cyclists, who’ll find it a good base for the Attert valley routes. I’d give it an afternoon and use it as a starting point rather than a destination.

Getting there and combining it

There’s no station in Redange, so you’ll arrive by car or by bus, and buses cost nothing across Luxembourg. I’d pair it with the free castle at Useldange, downstream on the Attert, and with Ell to the west for the sculpture park at Colpach. More two-wheeled ideas are under cycling in Luxembourg.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Luxemburgo and pick one that fits your day.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
