Old breweries, rooftop bars and a free night bus

A night out in Luxembourg, district by district

Luxembourg's nightlife is in the capital and spread across its districts. Clausen has bars and clubs in the old breweries of the Rives de Clausen, the Grund and the old town offer pubs, wine bars and rooftops, Kirchberg does after-work drinks, and Limpertsberg and Bonnevoie add bars and venues. On Friday and Saturday nights the City Night Bus is free until 3.30am.

  • Nightlife is in the capital, spread across its districts.
  • Clausen is the club district; the Grund and the old town are for pubs, wine bars and rooftops.
  • The City Night Bus is free on Friday and Saturday nights until 3.30am.
  • Club entry is usually 18, and the legal drinking age is 16.

I'd start with a drink in the Grund or on an old-town rooftop and finish in Clausen, where the dancing is. And I'd leave the car behind, because the City Night Bus is free at weekends and gets you back to the centre until 3.30am.

What I would book

My ranking, scored

Where to go out, in my view

My own scores out of 10 for each district, weighing atmosphere, variety and how easy it is to get home. Opinion, based on what the capital's tourist office describes.

  1. Clausen

Bars and clubs in the old breweries of the Rives de Clausen, open late with a wide mix of music.

    9.1 out of 10

  2. Grund

Pubs, bars and restaurants by the Alzette. Good to start the night or for a quieter evening, with a lift back up to the old town.

    8.8 out of 10

  3. Old town (Ville Haute)

Wine bars, trendy bars and rooftops right in the historic centre. A good starting point.

    8.4 out of 10

  4. Limpertsberg

Bars, dance bars, a cinema and clubs, with the Glacis car park next door.

    7.6 out of 10

  5. Kirchberg

Modern terraces for after-work drinks, a cinema and a sports bar, a few tram stops from the centre.

    7.2 out of 10

Luxembourg tends to get labelled as a serious city of offices and banks, and at night that label slips quite a bit. The LCTO sums it up in a way I agree with, the city is small, it’s lively, and free public transport lets you hop from one district to the next. Here’s where to go, how to get home and the few rules worth knowing before the first round.

The districts, one by one

For me, Clausen is the heart of the night. The old Mousel brewery buildings now house the Rives de Clausen, a cluster of bars, restaurants and clubs, and the LCTO describes it as the place to start with a drink and carry on in clubs that stay open very late, with Latin, rock, Brazilian or electronic music. It names the Melusina, a club known for themed nights and DJ sets, and The Roof rooftop bar. More on the area in Clausen.

The Grund is where to begin. Pubs, bars and restaurants by the Alzette, right for after-work drinks or a quieter evening, with a lift up to the Saint-Esprit plateau so you can skip the climb. Up top, the old town mixes restaurants, wine bars, trendy spots and rooftops, and the tourist office mentions De Gudde Wëllen, an alternative club with live music.

Three more areas have their own feel. Kirchberg, the business district, fills up after office hours with modern terraces, a cinema and a sports bar, a few tram stops away. Limpertsberg has bars, dance bars, a cinema and clubs, plus the handy Glacis car park. And Bonnevoie, near the station, adds bars, terraces and alternative cultural venues with gigs; the LCTO notes that the Gare district has multicultural bars and cabarets too.

Where to get a drink with a view

If the capital does one thing well at night, it’s rooftops. SixSeven crowns Galeries Lafayette on the Grand-Rue, The Roof looks over the river from the Rives de Clausen, the Mama Shelter and Sixtyfour° fly the flag for Kirchberg, and L’Observatoire, eight floors up in the Sofitel, gazes across the old town and down into the Grund. For me, a sunset drink on one of them is the best way to start.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxemburgo before prices climb.

Getting home

This is where Luxembourg makes life easy. The city’s night bus, the City Night Bus, runs on both weekend nights until 3.30am across eight lines. The one that matters most is CN1, which links the old town with Clausen, the station and other districts at least every quarter of an hour, starting before 10pm; the rest join from 12.30am, every half hour. It costs nothing. After 3.30am you’re left with taxis, which run all night, and the vel’OH! e-bikes, available round the clock.

What to know before you go out

The tourist office says the minimum age for nightclubs is usually 18, though some venues admit 16-year-olds. gov.uk puts the legal drinking age at 16 and points out that being drunk in public is an offence. On cannabis, the two official sources I read need careful reading together. Spain’s foreign ministry says adults may grow a little at home and use it in private, while the UK government warns of severe penalties for illegal drugs, cannabis included. My advice is simple, don’t carry it and don’t use it in public.

On safety, gov.uk says violent crime isn’t common, but asks you to watch your wallet on buses and platforms, with the main station the hotspot. The rest is in is Luxembourg safe.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxemburgo before prices climb.

Nights with a date

If you can choose, some nights are worth planning around. The Nuit des Musées opens the city-centre museums on Saturday 10 October 2026 from 5pm to 1am, and the City Party takes over town on 14 November. In summer 2027, the night of 22 June, ahead of National Day, brings a torchlight parade and fireworks over the Adolphe Bridge, and the Schueberfouer funfair opens daily from noon to 1am from 20 August to 8 September. Outside the capital, Visit Luxembourg lists nearly forty nightlife venues across the country, including the Casino 2000 at Mondorf-les-Bains and bars in Diekirch, Differdange and Clervaux. They’re fine if you’re staying nearby, but for a proper night out I’d base myself in Luxembourg City, where the choice is far wider and the free night bus takes care of the journey home.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Luxemburgo and choose by the reviews.

A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.

So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.
