A cargo barge sailing along the Moselle at Remich, opposite the riverside promenade lined with weeping willows

August in Luxembourg averages 18.4°C (65°F) with 237.1 hours of sunshine at Findel and around seven thunderstorms. It's the month of the Schueberfouer, the capital's huge funfair on the Champ du Glacis, which opens on 20 August 2027, and of Moselle wine festivals most weekends. 15 August is a bank holiday and local schools are off all month.

  • August averages 18.4°C (65°F) at Findel, with 237.1 hours of sunshine and about seven thunderstorms.
  • The Schueberfouer fills the Champ du Glacis from 20 August to 8 September 2027, open 12:00 to 1:00.
  • Moselle villages keep the wine flowing, with Stadtbredimus's Picadilly on the second weekend.
  • 15 August is a bank holiday; in 2027 it falls on a Sunday.

I'd treat August as a month of long afternoons and evenings. Mornings on the Moselle or at a lake, then the Schueberfouer from late afternoon, since it's open from 12:00 to 1:00. What I wouldn't do is pack the days with long hikes, because August still brings storms and the odd heatwave.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

The Schueberfouer, a fair since 1340

John the Blind founded it in 1340 as a St Bartholomew's market, and today it's the biggest funfair in the Greater Region. In 2027 it runs from 20 August to 8 September.

  2. 02 My tip

A drink you'll only find in Stadtbredimus

On the second weekend of August the village holds the Picadilly, named after a sparkling wine-and-blackcurrant drink that, according to the national portal, is only served at this festival.

  3. 03 Getting there

Take the tram to the Glacis

The fair takes over the Glacis car park for weeks. Trams and buses are free, so I'd leave any hire car at the hotel.

What I would book

August is when British families are on the move, and Luxembourg’s are too. The local schools are shut all month, plenty of city residents are away, and from the 20th the Glacis disappears under a funfair that draws millions of visitors a year. Down on the Moselle, each wine village picks its weekend to put a stall in the street. I’d see August for what it is, a month of fairs and terraces rather than long treks.

Heat is possible, storms are a given

August’s weather is July’s with a degree knocked off. Findel averages 18.4°C (65°F), sunshine adds up to 237.1 hours and the rain, around 72 mm, still comes mostly in thunderstorms, seven on average. Fog is a rarity, under two days.

The month’s peak was 37.9°C (100°F) in August 2003, and at the other end Findel has dipped to 4.3°C in three different Augusts. I’d pack summer clothes, a jacket for late nights at the fair and something waterproof. The whole year, records included, is in Luxembourg weather.

What is the Schueberfouer, and why does everyone go?

It’s the capital’s funfair and, in the words of its tourist office, the biggest in Luxembourg and the Greater Region. It began in 1340, when John the Blind, the Luxembourg count who became King of Bohemia, set up an eight-day market for St Bartholomew’s Day, 24 August. It started on the Plateau du Saint-Esprit, outgrew it, moved to Limpertsberg and in 1893 settled on the Glacis, where it has stayed. The first rides arrived in 1849.

In 2027 it opens on Friday 20 August and runs until 8 September, every day from 12:00 to 1:00, across about 4 hectares. What I like is that it isn’t a theme park but a city fair, with stalls frying Gromperekichelcher, the local potato fritters, and every generation out together. Food stands may open from 11:00, and there’s even a mascot, Lämmy the sheep, drawn by the cartoonist Emile Schlesser. History, rides and getting there are in Schueberfouer.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxemburgo before prices climb.

The Moselle, one festival after another

August is the busiest month in the government portal’s wine calendar. The one with a fixed rule is the Picadilly in Stadtbredimus, on the second weekend, with its wine-and-blackcurrant fizz served nowhere else. In 2026 there were also the Pinotsfest in Schengen early in the month, Remich’s Bacchusfescht on the 15th and Machtum’s tasting day on the 23rd, but those dates move and the 2027 ones weren’t yet known.

Getting between them by bus is free and far more sensible than driving if you plan to taste. The full list, village by village, is in Luxembourg wine festivals.

A bank holiday and a country on holiday

15 August, Assumption, is a public holiday; in 2027 it lands on a Sunday, so in practice you’ll only notice Sunday opening hours in the shops. What matters more is that Luxembourg’s schools are off for the whole month. The lakes and northern campsites fill up at weekends, and I’d book accommodation there well ahead, especially anything close to the water or on a campsite pitch.

A couple of things August doesn’t have. The Glacismaart, the flea market held on the third Sunday of the month on the Glacis, takes August off, not least because the fair has the site. And the Grand Ducal Palace, which showed its state rooms until 30 August in 2026, still hadn’t announced its 2027 opening when September 2026 ended.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxemburgo before prices climb.

From the UK in August

Flying into Findel, tram T1 takes you from the terminal towards the city for free, and the fair is an easy tram ride from the centre. If you’d rather go by rail, the route runs via Brussels or Paris, with the TGV from Paris taking about 2 hours 10 minutes. Bring your GHIC plus travel insurance, and a UK adaptor for the type F sockets.

My plan for an August week

Two or three days in the capital with a long evening at the Schueberfouer; a day on the Moselle timed for a festival weekend; and a lake day at the Upper Sûre or Remerschen, arriving early to get a spot. Mullerthal walks early and short, and in a heatwave keep an eye on LU-Alert and the official wildfire advice that Visit Luxembourg points to.

If you’re still choosing a month, Luxembourg in July has calmer lakes in its first fortnight, and Luxembourg in September brings the harvest and the fair’s final night. The full season is in Luxembourg in summer, and the month-by-month comparison in best time to visit Luxembourg.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Luxemburgo and choose by the reviews.

A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.

So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.

Frequently asked questions

What's the weather like in Luxembourg in August?

Much like July, slightly cooler. Findel averages 18.4°C (65°F), with 237.1 hours of sunshine and about 72 mm of rain, largely in storms, 7.2 on average. The month's record is 37.9°C, set in August 2003.

When is the Schueberfouer in 2027?

From Friday 20 August to Wednesday 8 September 2027, open daily from 12:00 to 1:00 on the Champ du Glacis in Luxembourg City. In 2028 it runs from 23 August to 11 September.

Is 15 August a bank holiday in Luxembourg?

Yes, Assumption is one of the country's 11 public holidays. In 2027 it falls on a Sunday, and shops may open at most from 5:00 to 19:00, as on any Sunday.

Are there wine festivals in Luxembourg in August?

Yes. Stadtbredimus holds the Picadilly on the second weekend. In 2026 there were also the Pinotsfest in Schengen, Remich's Bacchusfescht on 15 August and a tasting day in Machtum, but their 2027 dates weren't out yet.

Is August a good time to visit Luxembourg?

For the capital and the Moselle, yes, with usually decent weather and the funfair bringing the city to life. For walking I prefer June or September, because August brings heat, storms and the local school holidays.
