Gateway to the Minett and its UNESCO biosphere
Hotels in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg's second city
Esch-sur-Alzette (Esch-Uelzecht) had 6 hotel establishments and 1 campsite in 2025, according to STATEC, and the whole southern region had 24 hotels. It's the country's second city, with 38,275 residents, a railway station and the Belval blast furnaces next door. For exploring the Minett, the old mining basin and UNESCO biosphere reserve, it's the most practical base.

Esch isn't the Luxembourg of the postcards, and that's exactly why I like it. If industrial history, the Minett trails and a more local feel than the capital appeal, staying here makes sense, and the free train has you in Luxembourg City whenever you like.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 Worth the splurge
Climb the Belval blast furnace
Blast furnace A has a viewing platform 40 metres up. It opens Wednesday to Monday, 10am to 7pm, and costs €5; under-21s and students pay €0.01.

02 My tip
Sleep in a Minett Trail cabin
The Minett Trail runs 90 km in ten stages with 11 cabins, the Kabaisercher, from Clemency to Esch and on towards Bettembourg and Dudelange. An alternative to a hotel for walkers.

03 Getting there
Free trains to the capital
Esch has a station and Belval three stops of its own on the CFL network. Second-class travel within the country is free, so staying here doesn't cut you off from the capital.

04 To save money
A museum that's free for under-21s
The National Museum of Resistance and Human Rights opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 6pm; adults €5, free up to 21.
Esch-sur-Alzette
What I would book
Esch-sur-Alzette doesn’t feature in the usual Luxembourg photos, which is precisely why it deserves a page of its own. It’s the country’s second city, with 38,275 residents, and the capital of the Minett, the «red lands» of the old southern mining basin. Today it has the new district of Belval, with its own Belval-Université railway stop, sits inside a UNESCO biosphere reserve and is a stage on a 90-kilometre trail. Staying here means choosing a more everyday Luxembourg over the shop window.
How much accommodation the south has
Esch-sur-Alzette had six hotel establishments in 2025, one fewer than in 2024, according to STATEC’s figures, plus a campsite. The canton had 21 hotels in all, with Mondercange (four), Roeser (three), and Differdange and Dudelange (two each) behind Esch.
STATEC’s southern region had 24 hotels and 2,150 bed places in 2025, recording 136,305 arrivals and 225,506 hotel nights. The average stay, 2.26 nights, is among the longest in the country, above the Ardennes and the Mullerthal. To me, that says people come south with a specific purpose rather than passing through.
Who Esch suits
Anyone curious about industrial history, first of all. Next door is Belval, with the Belval blast furnaces, where you can climb furnace A to a viewing platform 40 metres up. It opens Wednesday to Monday, 10am to 7pm, and costs €5, while under-21s and students pay a single cent. In town itself is the National Museum of Resistance and Human Rights, Tuesday to Sunday for €5.
It’s also the natural base for walking. The Minett Trail, 90 km in ten stages, runs from Clemency to Esch and then splits into two branches towards Bettembourg and Dudelange, with 11 cabins to sleep in along the way, the Kabaisercher. Nearby are the reserves on old mining land, Ellergronn and Brucherbierg-Lallengerbierg, which the government’s portal describes as biodiversity hotspots.

When it isn’t worth it
With only two or three days on a first visit, I wouldn’t base myself in Esch. What nearly everyone comes to see is in Luxembourg City, and even with free trains, every day would start with a journey. In that case, go for hotels in Luxembourg City centre and make the south a day trip.
Esch centre or Belval?
They’re two different atmospheres in the same area. Central Esch is the traditional town, with its station, shopping streets and the Resistance museum. Belval is the new district built around the blast furnaces, with the Möllerei building beside the furnace and three railway stops. STATEC doesn’t break hotels down by district, so I can’t tell you how many there are on each side. My rule of thumb is the centre for dinner and a wander, and Belval if you have business there or want the furnace first thing.
If you go for Belval, the name people search for most is the ibis Esch Belval, at 12 avenue du Rock’n’Roll. Accor rates it three-star and puts it right next to the Belval-Université stop, with a direct train to the capital in about 30 minutes, and 50 metres from the Rockhal. Standard rooms are 14 m². For a gig or an early train, it’s the most practical choice in the district to my mind.

Getting around without a car
Esch has a station, Esch/Alzette, and Belval three stops of its own on the CFL network, Belval-Université, Belval-Lycée and Belval-Rédange. Domestic trains in second class have been free since 1 March 2020, so the round trip to the capital costs nothing. Differdange, Dudelange, Pétange and Rumelange have stations too.
For long-distance coaches, FlixBus lists Esch-sur-Alzette and Differdange among its Luxembourg stops.
From Findel airport, the simplest plan is tram T1 to Gare Centrale and a southbound train from there, checking the connection in the mobiliteit.lu planner. If you fancy a quieter seat, first class costs extra but not much, with a two-hour ticket at €3 and a day ticket at €6.
The Minett around you
The Minett has been a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 28 October 2020, covering 11 communes and 200 km², home to almost a third of the country’s population. From Esch, my first outing would be the Minett Park Fond-de-Gras, with the steam-hauled Train 1900 from Pétange and the Minièresbunn mine train to Lasauvage, with activities scheduled between May and the last weekend of September. And in Rumelange, a mine train carries you into the gallery at the National Mining Museum. And with children, there’s the Parc Merveilleux in Bettembourg.
From a base in Esch, those three fit comfortably into two days. For the town’s centre and neighbourhoods, see the Esch-sur-Alzette guide.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Esch-sur-Alzette on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.

Frequently asked questions
How many hotels are there in Esch-sur-Alzette?
STATEC counted 6 hotel establishments in the commune in 2025, one fewer than in 2024, and 1 campsite. The canton of Esch as a whole had 21 hotels.
Is Esch-sur-Alzette a good place to stay?
If you're here for the Minett or Belval, yes. On a short first trip focused on the capital, you don't need to; the train is free, but the sights you came for are in Luxembourg City.
How do I get from Esch-sur-Alzette to Luxembourg City?
By train from Esch/Alzette station or the Belval stops, free in second class within the country. Timetables are on mobiliteit.lu and cfl.lu.
What is there to see if I stay in Esch-sur-Alzette?
Belval's blast furnace A with its 40-metre viewing platform, the National Museum of Resistance, the nature reserves on old mining land and the Minett Trail, which passes through town.
Are there hotels in Dudelange or Differdange?
A few. STATEC counted 2 hotel establishments in each in 2025. Both are in the Minett and have railway stations, so they pair well with a base in Esch.
Can I reach Esch-sur-Alzette by coach?
FlixBus lists Esch-sur-Alzette and Differdange among its Luxembourg stops, alongside the capital and Rodange. From Britain, most people fly to Findel and carry on by train.
Where is the ibis Esch Belval?
At 12 avenue du Rock'n'Roll in Belval, next to the Belval-Université railway stop and 50 metres from the Rockhal, according to Accor. It's a three-star, and the direct train from there reaches the capital in about 30 minutes.
