Two artificial lakes, 6 ha each
The Weiswampach lakes, water and play on the northern plateau
The Weiswampach lakes are two artificial lakes of 6 hectares each beside the village of Weiswampach, in Luxembourg's far north. visitluxembourg presents them as a summer swimming spot, with a large pirate-themed playground, a maze and the Conzefenn nature trail, which leads into the nature reserve of the same name.

- The Weiswampach lakes are two artificial lakes of 6 hectares each.
- visitluxembourg recommends them for swimming in summer.
- There's a pirate playground, a maze and the Conzefenn nature trail.
- Access is free; no charge is published.
On a summer trip round the north with children, I'd come here before the Upper Sûre, because the water, the playground and the shady woods are all together and you never need the car in between. Out of season it's a short stroll, not a destination.

What I would keep in mind

01 Most beautiful
The Conzefenn, the reserve next door
The Conzefenn nature trail sets off from the lakes into the nature reserve of the same name. Local walk WW 3 also loops through the surrounding countryside.

02 To save money
A summer day out with no ticket
visitluxembourg lists no charge for the lakes or the pirate playground. They're the free alternative to the north's paying pools.

03 My tip
Check the water status before you swim
The Water Management Authority monitors four bathing zones on these lakes and publishes whether they're open. Swimming runs from 1 May to 30 September; the 2027 season starts on 1 May.
swimming lakes in Luxembourg
What I would book
In a country where places to swim outdoors are few and far between, the lakes at Weiswampach are the far north’s big asset. There are two, both artificial and 6 hectares apiece, on the edge of the village, and visitluxembourg calls them a natural paradise for relaxing and splashing about.
What’s around the water
The official listing sets it out clearly. In summer both lakes are ideal for swimming. Anyone who’d rather stay dry has a big pirate playground with its own nature trail and a maze, which is what draws most families. Several paths run along the shore, including the Conzefenn nature trail into the reserve of the same name and local walk WW 3 through the surrounding countryside.
Beside the lakes there’s a holiday resort with accommodation and refreshments, and the village centre and a nearby shopping centre have cafés and restaurants. To me it’s a place designed for a whole day without moving the car, and that’s its big selling point against Luxembourg’s other lakes. For a British family used to paying for leisure centres, a free lakeside afternoon with a playground thrown in is a welcome change, though I’d pack towels and snacks, as the official listing says nothing about changing rooms or kiosks at the water’s edge.
Swim here or at the Upper Sûre?
That’s the question I’d ask on a July trip. The Upper Sûre lake, at about 380 hectares according to the government portal, is on another scale, with bathing meadows, a solar boat and kayaking, and in its authorised areas you can swim from May to September, just as here. Echternach lake, at 30 hectares, allows swimming at its Adventure Island on the same dates, from 7am to 10pm. Weiswampach is smaller and calmer, and suits young children and a trip focused on the north. I compare all four side by side on my page about swimming lakes in Luxembourg.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Clervaux on Booking.com and filter by area before price.
Before you get in the water
The visitluxembourg listing gives no dates and says nothing about lifeguards, but the Water Management Authority includes these lakes on its official list, with four monitored zones that were rated ‘excellent’ in the 2025 assessment. The season is the standard one for public lakes and ponds, May to September, so after closing on 30 September 2026 it reopens for swimming on 1 May 2027. The authority makes clear it isn’t responsible for bathers’ safety, so don’t count on a lifeguard. Weiswampach is also one of the three lakes in the country at risk of cyanobacteria, which is why I’d check the traffic light on the official website that morning. For questions on the spot, the Tourist Info is a few steps away at Om Leempuddel; in late September 2026 it was staffed on weekdays only, mornings 8.30 to 11.30 and afternoons 1 to 4.30pm (Friday until 4pm).
Getting there
visitluxembourg notes public transport near the lakes. Weiswampach has no railway, but four bus routes cross the commune, including the 170 from Ettelbruck and the 174 from Hosingen, all free like every bus in the country. With a spare hour, the Lancaster Memorial on Urenerweeg honours the airmen of two Lancasters that came down here in the last war. Travelling with young ones, the lakes pair well with other ideas in Luxembourg with kids.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Clervaux on Expedia and filter by area before price.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Weiswampach lakes and pick one that fits your day.
Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
