From a border river to the country's biggest lake
Canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding in Luxembourg
Most paddling in Luxembourg happens on the Sûre, the river along the German border, with hire at Dillingen and Wallendorf-Pont, where a single kayak for the 11 km run to Bollendorf cost €22 in September 2026. For flat water there's the Upper Sûre Lake, with canoes and boards at Lultzhausen, plus paddleboarding on the Rosport reservoir and Echternach lake.

- The river to paddle is the Sûre, with hire at Dillingen and Wallendorf-Pont.
- Wallendorf-Pont to Bollendorf is 11 km, 3 to 3.5 hours.
- A single kayak cost €22 in September 2026.
- On the Upper Sûre Lake you hire at Lultzhausen, and engines are banned.
- At Echternach, paddleboards from age 12 and up to 115 kg per board.
For me the best trip is a canoe down the Sûre, because the river is the border and you paddle with a different country on each bank. I'd keep the Upper Sûre Lake for families with small children or anyone who doesn't want to depend on river levels.

01 Most beautiful
Paddle along a border
Ronn's run follows the Sûre from Wallendorf-Pont to Bollendorf, with Luxembourg on one bank and Germany on the other. It's 11 km and takes 3 to 3.5 hours.
Reisdorf -
02 My tip
Be at Dillingen by 11am
Launches at Dillingen run from 10:00 to 14:00 and the operator suggests arriving between 10:00 and 11:00. The season depends on the water level.
-
03 My tip
Book the lake canoe ahead
Lultzhausen youth hostel hires out canoes, kayaks and paddleboards in summer on request, and visit-eislek advises booking in advance.
Lultzhausen -
04 Watch out
Own board? Not from Pier'75
At Echternach lake, if you bring your own paddleboard you can't launch from Pier'75, where the hire is. You have to use the south access by the Echo car park.

05 Money
A two-person canoe for €45
A Canadian canoe for two adults cost €45 at Ronn's, or €47.50 with a child up to 50 kg. Prices include 17% VAT, with 10% off for groups of 20 or more.
My ranking, scored
Where I'd paddle, best first
My score out of 10 for a visitor after an afternoon on the water, weighing scenery, the sense of a journey, how easy it is to hire and how safe it is for beginners. It's my opinion based on the official listings.

If you’ve paddled the Wye or a Lake District tarn, Luxembourg will feel familiar in scale and very different in one respect, because the best river here is an international border. The tourist board talks up kayaks and canoes on the fast rivers of the north, calm lakes and a Moselle for noisier sports. When you look for hire with an official listing, though, it all comes down to the Sûre and three bodies of flat water. Here’s how I’d choose between them.
Canoeing the border on the Sûre
This is the one I’d do if I only had a morning. The Sûre is the border between Luxembourg and Germany along this stretch, so a canoe trip down it means a different country on each bank. At Wallendorf-Pont, part of Reisdorf and almost at the point where the Our joins the Sûre, Ronn’s Bikes, Kajak & Kanu hires kayaks and Canadian canoes for the 11 km run to Bollendorf. Allow 3 to 3.5 hours; the operator pitches it at beginners, children and groups as much as seasoned paddlers. On 3 October 2026 its website said it was closed until 27 May 2027, and that it doesn’t hire out when the Sûre drops below 56 cm on the Bollendorf gauge.
The prices published in September 2026 were refreshingly simple. A single kayak was €22, a double €40, a canoe for two adults €45, rising to €47.50 with a child up to 50 kg. A dry barrel for your phone and keys is €3.50. The Wallendorf, Bei der Bréck bus stop is 100 metres away, and buses are free within the country.
Dillingen, the other launch point
Further upstream, Outdoor Freizeit Dillingen has its office on the riverbank and launches from Dillingen or Dillingerbrück, on the road between Diekirch and Echternach, 12 km from the latter. The Dillingen, Déiljen bus stop is 200 metres away and there’s parking on site. For 2026 it advertised the Whitsun weekend, 23 to 25 May, then 4 June to 30 September, subject to the water level, but its website explains that the drought made paddling almost impossible from late July and that it has closed until the 2027 season.
Launches run from 10:00 to 14:00, and the listing suggests arriving between 10:00 and 11:00. I’d take that seriously and turn up early, since the last departure is at 14:00. After a dry spell there may be no trips at all, so check the day before.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Echternach on Booking.com and filter by area before price.
Rather have flat water?
Then head for the Upper Sûre Lake. At Lultzhausen the youth hostel sits right on the reservoir, with a beach and the water sports kit on its doorstep, and in summer it hires canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards on request. From April to October it also runs supervised sessions for groups, schools and families. visit-eislek recommends booking ahead and points out you can bring your own boat or board. Engines are banned, and there’s a protected zone near the dam where paddling isn’t allowed.
With young children this is where I’d go, because there’s no current and the nature park scenery is lovely. If you also want a swim, the monitored zones and their season are in my guide to swimming lakes in Luxembourg.
Boards and pedalos at Rosport and Echternach
On the Rosport reservoir, reception at the Camping du Barrage hires kayaks, paddleboards and water bikes, which visitluxembourg lists as bookable from May to the end of October, although the campsite’s own website limits kayaks and boards to mid-May to mid-September, at €10 and €15 an hour for non-residents. The same stretch of water has a water-ski school and banana boat rides, which is a different kind of day out.
Echternach lake, 30 hectares, is more for a gentle float than a proper paddle. On the island by the Pier’75 bistro, on the east shore, you can hire paddleboards and pedalos from 1 May, with the last pedalo going out at least 30 minutes before closing. The board rules are simple. You must be 12 to use one on your own, non-swimmers wear a life jacket and the limit is 115 kg. If you bring your own board, launch from the south end by the Echo car park, where there are showers.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Echternach on Expedia and filter by area before price.
What I couldn’t find listed
The Our is a beautiful river, but I found no kayak hire with an official listing on its Luxembourg stretch, so I’m not recommending any. The same goes for the Moselle, which the tourist board sells for boating, paddleboarding, jet skis, water skiing and wakeboarding. If you’d rather see the Moselle from a seat with a glass in hand, that’s a job for the Moselle river cruises.
A day on the water
I’d canoe the Sûre from Wallendorf-Pont in the morning, have lunch in Echternach and spend the afternoon on a paddleboard on the lake. With children under ten, I’d swap the river for the Upper Sûre and book the hostel canoe before leaving home. Either way, don’t treat the river as a swimming spot, since no river in the country is a designated bathing water.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Echternach and pick one that fits your day.
Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
If you still need a way in, check the best ticket deals to Luxembourg from where you are.

Frequently asked questions
Where can you go kayaking in Luxembourg?
On the Sûre, with hire at Dillingen and Wallendorf-Pont; on the Upper Sûre Lake, from the youth hostel at Lultzhausen; and on the Rosport reservoir. Echternach lake has paddleboard and pedalo hire.
How much does it cost to hire a kayak on the Sûre?
At Ronn's in Wallendorf-Pont a single kayak cost €22 and a double €40 for the 11 km run to Bollendorf, according to prices published in September 2026, VAT included.
When is the canoeing season in Luxembourg?
Dillingen advertised Whitsun and 4 June to 30 September, water level permitting, but in 2026 the drought ended the Sûre season early, and Ronn's doesn't reopen until 27 May 2027. At Rosport the campsite hires kayaks and boards from mid-May to mid-September, and the Lultzhausen hostel hires in summer.
Can you kayak on the Upper Sûre Lake?
Yes. Lultzhausen youth hostel hires canoes, kayaks and paddleboards in summer on request and runs supervised sessions from April to October. You can also bring your own boat or board, but no engines.
Where can I paddleboard in Luxembourg?
On Echternach lake, the Rosport reservoir, the Upper Sûre Lake and the Remerschen lakes. At Echternach you must be 12 to use a board on your own, and the limit is 115 kg per board.
Can you kayak on the Moselle in Luxembourg?
visitluxembourg sells the Moselle for boating, paddleboarding, jet skis, water skiing and wakeboarding, but it doesn't list a kayak hire there. If you want to hire and paddle, I'd go to the Sûre.
