Brandenbourg, an Ardennes village in the shadow of its castle

Brandenbourg (Branebuerg) is a village in the commune of Tandel, canton of Vianden, with 324 residents according to the commune's latest count, from January 2022. It sits below the ruins of its medieval castle, free to enter from 1 April to 31 October, with the Kinneksknäppchen viewpoint opposite. Not to be confused with Brandenburg in Germany.

  • Brandenbourg is a village in the commune of Tandel with 324 residents in 2022.
  • Its medieval ruins are free to enter from 1 April to 31 October.
  • The Kinneksknäppchen is the viewpoint over the castle.
  • There are no hotels; stay in Vianden.

Brandenbourg takes a morning. I'd go up to the ruins early, walk down into the village and then find the Kinneksknäppchen to see the castle from opposite, which is the picture worth taking home.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 To save money

    Ruins with no entry fee

Much of the castle is free to enter from 1 April to 31 October, open 9am to 6pm in the last week of September, according to visitluxembourg.

  2. 02 Most beautiful

    The little king's hill

Kinneksknäppchen means the little king's hill in Luxembourgish. Visit Éislek names it as the viewpoint over the castle ruins.

  3. 03 Getting there

    Stay in Vianden

The commune of Tandel had no hotels in 2025. Vianden, with seven, is the nearest base with beds.

    Vianden

Brandenbourg is one of those villages you understand by looking up. The ruins of its castle command it from a hill, and visitluxembourg describes it as a picturesque village at their feet. It has 324 residents according to the commune of Tandel, in a count from January 2022, and in Luxembourgish it’s called Branebuerg. One useful warning before you search for it, it has nothing to do with Brandenburg, the German state.

A village at a crossroads

The castle wasn’t put here by chance. visitluxembourg talks of a strategic position above old crossroads, and of a story going back over a thousand years to a timber fort. In more recent times, the village was one of the sections a royal decree of 25 October 1827 used to create the commune of Bastendorf, alongside Landscheid, Kippenhof, Tandel and Bastendorf itself.

What to see

The main event is Brandenbourg Castle. Between April and October you can walk into most of the ruin for free, with panels telling its story; at the end of September 2026 it was open from 9am to 6pm. The keep still standing dates from the 13th century, and visitluxembourg encourages you to explore what’s left of the cellars and towers, which is where it’s easiest to picture the place in its prime.

Then the viewpoint. Visit Éislek names the Kinneksknäppchen, Luxembourgish for the little king’s hill, as the best spot to see the ruins. For me it’s the loveliest photo here, better than anything taken from inside the castle, because it shows the whole thing.

If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Vianden for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.

Out of season?

The official listing only mentions free access from 1 April to 31 October. For a visit between November and March there are no published hours, so I wouldn’t count on getting into the ruins and would settle for seeing them from the Kinneksknäppchen, where on a clear winter’s day the bare woods should leave the outline of the towers easier to pick out.

Fitting it into your trip

Brandenbourg doesn’t fill a day, so I’d combine it with other things in the canton. St Mark’s chapel at Longsdorf, in the same commune, is a pilgrimage spot on 25 April. And close by is Vianden, with its restored castle, the perfect contrast to these ruins.

Getting there is easiest by car. Otherwise there are RGTR buses on the Ettelbruck to Vianden route through the commune, at no cost inside Luxembourg, so check the route on mobiliteit.lu before you set off.

When it comes to sleeping, the commune had just one campsite and no hotel at all in 2025, according to STATEC. Your base is Vianden. The commune is a member of the Our Nature Park, created in 2005 and covering 420 km² of plateau and narrow valleys, according to the country’s official portal.

If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Vianden for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Vianden on GetYourGuide.

If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.

Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
