Municipality in the canton of Luxembourg, Guttland
Niederanven, nine villages between the airport and the fields
Niederanven is a municipality of 7,161 people (1-1-2026) east of the capital, close to Findel airport, with nine localities including Senningerberg and Oberanven. visitguttland highlights the Aarnescht reserve with its many orchid species, the Andethana walks, the Kulturhaus and a fire brigade exhibition in Senningen. STATEC counted five hotels in 2025.
Niederanven works in two ways. As a base before an early flight, since it's next to Findel and has hotels, or as a nature walk in the Aarnescht reserve. I'd go in spring, when the orchids make the trip worthwhile.
Before you go
What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
Orchids in the Aarnescht
visitguttland describes the Aarnescht reserve as home to a great many orchid species and a Mediterranean microclimate. For me it's the best thing in the municipality if you like the outdoors.
-
02 My tip
The Andethana walks
Andethana was the Roman name for Niederanven, according to visitguttland, and it gives its name to several waymarked walks. The Roman road from Arlon to Trier ran through here.
-
03 Getting there
Bus 29 ends at Senningerberg
Line 29 runs from Senningerberg to Hesperange via the central station and Cents-Hamm, according to the airport website. It's free and crosses the whole capital.

04 Worth the splurge
Sleeping next to Findel
STATEC counted five hotels or similar and one campsite in Niederanven in 2025. If your flight home leaves at dawn, staying here saves you an early alarm.
Luxembourg airport hotels
Niederanven is one of those places plenty of travellers brush past without knowing it, because it sits right up against Findel airport. It has 7,161 residents and nine localities, Ernster, Hostert, Niederanven, Oberanven, Rameldange, Senningen, Senningerberg, Staffelstein and Waldhof, spread over about 41 km². Much of what visitguttland highlights here is countryside and nature reserve.
A Roman name of its own
According to visitguttland, people have settled here since time immemorial thanks to its many springs, as numerous archaeological finds show. Niederanven’s Roman name was Andethana, and several waymarked walks now carry it, explaining the nature, culture and history of the municipality. That fits, because the Roman road from Arlon to Trier ran through Oberanven, the same road that gave Strassen its name and crossed Bertrange. I enjoy tracing those old lines from one village to the next.
What is there to see in Niederanven?
The place I’d make for is the Aarnescht reserve. visitguttland talks of a great many orchid species and explains that its south-facing slopes enjoy a microclimate with a Mediterranean feel. In spring, that’s your plan. The municipality also has a cycle path, a fitness trail and a golf course.
In Senningen, the old fire station houses an exhibition of historic firefighting kit, a drying tower, scale models of fire engines, old hoses and uniforms, spanning the 19th to the 21st centuries. The Kulturhaus Niederanven occupies a restored former manor house in a large park and serves as a meeting point for creative culture in the area. For a family swim there’s the Syrdall pool. I compare the other swimming pools in Luxembourg separately. Senningen castle, on the other hand, at 50 rue du Château, is where the government holds official meetings, and visitluxembourg gives it no visiting hours, so I wouldn’t put it on the to-do list even though it turns up on tourist maps. The castles that do open are in my guide to castles in Luxembourg.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxembourg before prices climb.
Is it a good base for an early flight?
Yes, and that’s its most practical use. Luxembourg Airport is at Findel, which belongs to neighbouring Sandweiler, and Niederanven is right beside it. STATEC counted five hotels or similar and a campsite in the municipality in 2025, and visitguttland also mentions a large shopping centre and a good number of restaurants. For a night before flying home, it makes sense. For seeing the country, I’d stay in the capital.
How I’d use it
With an early flight home, I’d spend the last night in the municipality and give the afternoon before to the Aarnescht or one of the Andethana walks, whose panels explain the local nature and history. It’s a way to end your trip in the countryside rather than a hotel lobby, with the terminal right next door the following morning.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxembourg before prices climb.
Getting there
Bus 29 terminates at Senningerberg and crosses the capital via the central station, Cents-Hamm and Howald to Hesperange. There are no fares on public transport in Luxembourg, so you can reach the municipality even without a hire car.
If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Luxembourg and choose by the reviews.
A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.
So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.
