A price cap that changes several times a month
Petrol prices in Luxembourg and the state's maximum
Petrol and diesel in Luxembourg have a maximum price per litre, published by the national statistics office STATEC and revised several times a month. From 24 September 2026 the cap was €1.835 a litre for 95 unleaded, and from 25 September €2.095 for diesel. Filling stations can charge less but not more.

- Fuel in Luxembourg has a maximum price per litre, published by STATEC.
- From 24-9-2026, €1.835 for 95 unleaded; from 25-9-2026, €2.095 for diesel.
- The cap changes several times a month; in September 2026 diesel went from €2.024 to €2.160.
- Driving 100 km on 95 unleaded cost €10.92 in August 2026, according to the official comparison.
Before filling up I'd check STATEC's latest maximum, which is the ceiling, and not drive around hunting for the cheapest pump. In a country this size, a long detour for a few cents doesn't pay.

What I would keep in mind

01 Money
A maximum, not a fixed price
STATEC publishes the maximum price per litre for 95 unleaded and diesel. Stations can charge less but not more, and the figure changes several times a month.
-
02 My tip
Check the date of the last change
In September 2026 the diesel cap changed six times, from €2.024 on 3 September to €2.095 on 25 September. Look at STATEC's series before you travel.

What 100 km actually costs
The Mobility Ministry's official comparison puts August 2026 costs at €10.92 per 100 km on 95 unleaded, €11.87 on diesel and €4.50 in an electric car.

04 Getting there
Motorway stations sit outside shop hours law
The shop opening hours law in force since 19 June 2026 excludes motorway filling stations, as it does shops in stations and at the airport.

What I would book
If you’re driving in Luxembourg, there’s something worth knowing that you won’t find at home. The price of petrol and diesel has an official ceiling per litre, published by STATEC, the national statistics office, and it changes several times a month. Filling stations can charge less, but never more.
The cap as of September 2026
According to STATEC’s series, the maximum price of 95 unleaded has been €1.835 a litre since 24 September 2026, and diesel €2.095 a litre since 25 September. Those were the figures in force on the day I’m writing, 29 September, and I wouldn’t rely on them for more than a few days.
What strikes me most is how often they move. In September 2026 the diesel cap went from €2.024 on the 3rd to €2.123 on the 12th, rose to €2.160 on the 17th and fell back to €2.055 on the 23rd before settling at €2.095. Unleaded moved between €1.792 and €1.898 in the same month. The table shows a selection of recent changes.
How to read the price at the pump
As a ceiling. If the pump shows the STATEC maximum or a little below it, that’s normal. You can compare stations to save a few cents, but in a country this size it isn’t worth a long detour. What I would do is check STATEC’s series before the trip, because it gives you a reliable idea of what you’ll pay.
One useful detail. The shop opening hours law in force since 19 June 2026 excludes motorway filling stations from its limits, just as it excludes shops in railway stations and at the airport. Each station sets its own hours.

What does 100 km cost?
The Mobility Ministry runs an official comparison that turns prices into euros per 100 km, using the average consumption of new cars registered in the country and each month’s average price. For August 2026 it gives €10.92 on 95 unleaded, €11.87 on diesel, €5.09 on LPG, €11.08 on hydrogen and €4.50 in an electric car.
I think it’s the fairest way to compare, because it looks at the cost of the journey rather than just the litre. And in August 2026, 100 km on diesel cost nearly a euro more than on petrol. For electric cars, the calculation assumes 80 % of charging happens at home, so a visitor charging on public points will pay more than that figure.
Budgeting a road trip
The per-100 km figures make budgeting simple. Using the official August 2026 estimate, a 300 km tour of the north and the Moselle in a typical petrol car would come to roughly €33 in fuel, and about €36 in a diesel. That’s my own multiplication of the ministry’s figure, not an official quote, and your car’s real consumption will shift it up or down. August itself shows how quickly things move, too. The unleaded cap stood at €1.689 on 12 August, €1.727 on the 15th and €1.748 on the 26th, while diesel climbed from €1.798 on 7 August to €1.963 on the 20th.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Luxemburgo for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
What you’ll find at the pump
The official comparison only covers fuels sold in Luxembourg, and the list helps avoid picking the wrong nozzle. It shows diesel B7, 95 unleaded E10, LPG, hydrogen and electricity. If your hire car runs on petrol, it’ll normally take 95 E10, but check the filler cap or ask the firm before filling up.
If you’re hiring a car
Check the fuel type on the rental agreement before you set off, as mixing up petrol and diesel is an expensive mistake to fix.
If your contract asks you to return the car full, STATEC’s maximum lets you compare the firm’s refuelling charge with what you’d pay yourself. Where the desks are and when they open is in car hire in Luxembourg.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Luxemburgo on GetYourGuide.
What I won’t tell you
I won’t compare the price with the UK or with the neighbouring countries, because I have no official source doing it on the same date, and prices move too fast to trust a figure from another day. Nor will I recommend a particular station, in Echternach or anywhere else. For speed limits see driving in Luxembourg, and for city car parks and zones, parking in Luxembourg.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
