The staircase climbing through the narrow cleft of the Perekop at Berdorf, between greenish sandstone walls

The Mullerthal region had 20 hotels with 893 bed places in 2025, according to STATEC, against 19 campsites with 12,477. Outside Echternach, the best base among the rocks is Berdorf, with 5 hotels, on Route 2 of the Mullerthal Trail; Beaufort has castles and a youth hostel, and Larochette a castle, a hostel and a quiet valley. It's camping country more than hotel country.

  • The Mullerthal had 20 hotels and 19 campsites in 2025, according to STATEC.
  • Berdorf, with 5 hotels and Route 2 through the village, is the walkers' base.
  • Beaufort and Larochette each have a castle and a youth hostel.
  • Here camping beats hotels on both bed places and nights.

If you're here to walk, I'd stay in Berdorf. You're right on top of the rocks, Route 2 goes through the village and in the morning you'll have the Perekop and the Huel Lee to yourself. With children, Beaufort gets my vote, for the castles, the pool and the hostel.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    Berdorf, surrounded by rock

Around the village are the Perekop, climbed by ladders, the Huel Lee, a cavity quarried since Roman times, and the Priedegtstull. Route 2 of the Trail passes right through.

    Berdorf
  2. 02 To save money

    Two youth hostels

visitluxembourg lists a youth hostel in Beaufort, with a bowling alley and an indoor play area, and another in Larochette. For walkers on a tight budget, the alternative to a hotel.

  3. 03 Worth the splurge

    Sleep below two castles

In Beaufort, the ruins of the medieval castle stand beside the 17th-century Renaissance castle. They open 10am to 6pm and adult entry is €8.

  4. 04 My tip

    Camping rules the region

In 2025 Mullerthal hotels logged around 59,500 nights against more than 750,000 across all accommodation. With a motorhome or a tent, there's plenty of choice.

What I would book

My ranking, scored

Where to stay in the Mullerthal, my ranking

My scores measure how well each village works for two or three days' walking (trails from the door, services, STATEC's accommodation count and peace and quiet). Echternach, the region's town, has its own page. My opinion, not an official ranking.

  1. Berdorf

Five hotels and two campsites in 2025, Route 2 through the village and the best-known rocks all around. The walkers' base.

    8.8 out of 10

  2. Beaufort

Two castles, Route 3, an outdoor pool in summer and an ice rink in winter. Two hotels, three campsites and a hostel.

    8.2 out of 10

  3. Larochette

A castle on sandstone, the White Ernz valley and five local trails. One hotel and a hostel, for those after calm.

    7.8 out of 10

  4. Müllerthal (Waldbillig)

The Schiessentümpel and the Heringer Millen on the doorstep, with one hotel in the whole commune in 2025. Ideal if you can get in.

    7.5 out of 10

The Mullerthal, or Mëllerdall, is the region Luxembourgers call Little Switzerland, a landscape of sandstone rocks, narrow gorges and forest that has been a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2022. Echternach is its town and has its own page. This one is for anyone who wants to sleep right inside it, in the villages among the rocks, where the accommodation picture looks very different from the rest of the country.

Camping country

STATEC counted twenty hotels in its Mullerthal region in 2025, with 893 bed places, and nineteen campsites with 12,477. The figures for nights tell the same story from another angle. Hotels recorded around 59,500 nights, while the region’s accommodation as a whole passed 750,000. Put simply, people sleep in tents and caravans here far more than in hotels.

The average hotel stay was 1.79 nights, the shortest in the country. I think that’s a missed opportunity. The Mullerthal Trail covers 112 km in three routes, and each one takes a long day. One night doesn’t leave time for anything, and the rocks are at their best in the soft light of early morning and late afternoon, exactly the hours a day-tripper misses.

Berdorf, for walkers

Berdorf is, according to visitluxembourg, one of the region’s main walking destinations, on a plateau ringed by rocks, narrow passages, caves and forest. Route 2 of the Mullerthal Trail runs through the village, and around it are the Perekop, a great rock you climb by ladders, the Huel Lee, a cavity where the Romans quarried stone and medieval masons cut millstones, and the Priedegtstull. There’s also the Aquatower, with an exhibition and a viewing platform.

With five hotels and two campsites in 2025, it has more hotels than any other village among the rocks. If you’re here to walk, it’s my base. And if you climb, the local crags are covered in rock climbing in Luxembourg.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Berdorf on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

Beaufort, for families

Beaufort has two castles side by side, the ruins of the medieval one, built between 1050 and 1650, and the 17th-century Renaissance castle, open 10am to 6pm with adult entry at €8. The blackcurrant liqueur Cassero is still made there. Route 3 of the Trail reaches the castles through the Halerbaach and Haupeschbaach valleys.

What makes me recommend it for families is everything else. There’s an outdoor pool in summer, a covered ice rink in winter, a youth hostel with a bowling alley and indoor play area, and the geopark’s Geo-Expo, free to enter. STATEC counted two hotels and three campsites there in 2025.

Larochette, for peace and quiet

Larochette sits in the White Ernz valley, with a castle on a sandstone spur above the village. It opens 10am to 6pm, closes on Wednesdays and costs €7. In the centre are the Bleech and the Manoir de Roebé; around it, five local trails, L1 to L5, lead to the castle, towards Meysembourg or to the Noumerleeën rocks.

It had one hotel and one campsite in 2025, plus a youth hostel; you’ll find the village covered in its own Larochette guide. It’s where I’d go to switch off, on Route 3 and within reach of the rest of the region.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Berdorf on Expedia and filter by area before price.

Müllerthal, the village behind the name

The locality of Müllerthal belongs to the commune of Waldbillig, which had one hotel and one campsite in 2025, according to STATEC. Here you’ll find the Schiessentümpel, the waterfall with its little bridge that the regional tourist board calls the most photographed spot in the region, and the Heringer Millen, a 17th-century mill with a milling museum and tourist office. Routes 2 and 3 both pass through, so it’s a good place to link them. With so little accommodation, I’d treat it as a stop rather than a base, unless you find a free room. The commune has its own guide, Waldbillig.

Without a car

There’s no railway station among the rocks; the villages are served by buses, free within the country, with times on mobiliteit.lu. Given that, my advice is to pick a base on the route you plan to walk and hike from village to village. If you’d rather have more services, compare hotels in Echternach, where Routes 1 and 2 begin.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Berdorf and pick one that fits your day.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.

If you still need a way in, check the best ticket deals to Luxembourg from where you are.
