Waldbillig, the commune that named Little Switzerland
Waldbillig is a commune of 1,999 people in the canton of Echternach, in Luxembourg's Mullerthal region. Within its borders lie the hamlet of Müllerthal, which gave the whole region its name, the Schiessentümpel waterfall, the Heringer Millen mill and the village of Christnach. Waldbillig is also the birthplace of Michel Rodange, Luxembourg's national poet and author of Renert.

Hardly anyone comes to Waldbillig for Waldbillig itself; they come for Müllerthal, which happens to be in the commune. I'd sleep down in the hamlet in the valley and keep the village of Waldbillig and Christnach for a quiet loop across the plateau.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
The waterfall with the bridge
The Schiessentümpel on the Black Ernz, with its 1879 sandstone bridge, is the symbol of the region. The bridge marks the boundary between Waldbillig and Consdorf.

02 Getting there
A tourist office in a mill
The Heringer Millen, a 17th-century mill in Müllerthal, is the commune's information centre for the Mullerthal Trail, with a restaurant and a mill museum.

03 My tip
Parking for the waterfall
There's a large car park on the CR 121, between Müllerthal and the Breidweiler bridge junction, about 500 m from the falls, according to visitluxembourg.
-
04 Most beautiful
Christnach, a model village
The commune calls Christnach a model village that has kept its big farmsteads closed around a courtyard. Between Christnach and Waldbillig there's a golf course.
What I would book
Waldbillig is one of those places whose name hardly anyone knows and whose scenery almost everyone has seen in a photo. Within its borders sit the hamlet of Müllerthal, which lent its name to the entire region, and the Schiessentümpel waterfall with its little stone bridge, the most reproduced image of Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland.
Three villages and a valley
STATEC put the commune’s population at 1,999 on 1 January 2026, spread over eight official localities. The three that matter to visitors could hardly be more different. Waldbillig, in the middle of the commune on a plateau, is the administrative centre, with the town hall and school. Christnach, which the commune itself calls a model village, has kept its big farmsteads closed around wide courtyards, and new houses stick to the same generous scale. And down in the Black Ernz valley is Müllerthal.
Müllerthal is little more than a few houses, two hotels and some campsites, says the commune’s website, set among monumental rock formations. Yet it’s the place that named the region and the starting point for a great many walks. It’s also where two routes of the Mullerthal Trail, the second and the third, cross.
The Schiessentümpel
The Schiessentümpel waterfall on the Black Ernz is the symbol of the region. Its sandstone bridge was built in 1879 by a local mason, Jean-Pierre Prommenschenkel from Christnach, and today it doubles as the border with Consdorf. You reach it on foot from the Heringer Millen, about a kilometre away, or from the car park on the CR 121, some 500 m off.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Mullerthal, Waldbillig for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
The Heringer Millen
In the hamlet, the restored 17th-century Heringer Millen reopened in 2009 as a visitor centre run by the commune’s tourism association. It has a mill museum, a big wheel still in working order, a wood-fired oven where bread is baked, an information desk and a restaurant. It’s where I’d stop for maps before setting off.
Michel Rodange and the village of Waldbillig
Waldbillig is where Michel Rodange was born, Luxembourg’s national poet and the father of Renert, the Luxembourgish take on Reynard the Fox. The commune’s website says so on its home page, and visitluxembourg sums the place up in exactly those terms, as the village of the poet’s birthplace, on a green plateau ringed by forest. The town hall occupies what the commune calls a building from the start of the century, with large windows framed in red brick, originally built as a sports hall, the first in the country.
Between Christnach and Waldbillig, away from the roads and among centuries-old woods, lies a golf course, according to the commune. It’s the other side of the area, more plateau and farmland than rocks.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Mullerthal, Waldbillig for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
Staying in the commune
STATEC counted just one hotel and one campsite in Waldbillig in 2025, and two hotels in 2024; the commune itself talks of two hotels and several campsites in Müllerthal. With numbers that small, I’d also look at the hotels in Echternach, which you can reach by bus, or Berdorf, a short walk along the Trail.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Mullerthal, Waldbillig on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
