  • Wasserbillig Aquarium has 15 tanks holding 90,000 litres of fresh and salt water.
  • Tropical and native fish, from piranhas and discus to pike, with daily feeding and commentary.
  • In September 2026 it cost €3 from age 13 and €1.50 up to 12, card only.
  • It's free with the LuxembourgPass, and last admission is 15:45.

It's not a big aquarium and doesn't pretend to be, and for €3 I'm not asking for more. I'd treat it as an hour's stop with children on a Moselle day out, with two things noted in advance. Last entry is 15:45 even though it closes later, and they don't take cash.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 My tip

    Last entry at 15:45

The official listing puts last admission at 15:45, well before closing time. If you're going in the afternoon, don't leave it late.

  2. 02 Money

    Leave the cash at home

Tickets can only be paid by credit card, according to visitluxembourg. Bring a card even for a €3 ticket.

  3. 03 To save money

    Free with the LuxembourgPass

The pass covers entry. Without it, adults pay €3 and children €1.50, falling to €2.50 and €1.25 each for groups of ten or more.

  4. 04 Getting there

    Train to Wasserbillig

Wasserbillig has a station on the Luxembourg to Trier line, and second-class train travel within the country is free.

    Wasserbillig

Wasserbillig sits at the very eastern tip of the country, where the Sûre joins the Moselle and the far bank is already Germany. On Rue des Pépinières there’s a small aquarium that the tourist board sells as a mysterious habitat and which, for a family, is one of the cheapest outings in Luxembourg. It belongs to the commune of Mertert, and the village has its own page at Wasserbillig.

Fifteen tanks, ninety thousand litres

The numbers are modest and clear. Fifteen tanks holding 90,000 litres of water between them, some salt and some fresh, with whole landscapes built from plants and rock. American perch live in the rocky tanks. In the densely planted ones, discus, angelfish, neon tetras and friends hunt for food among the leaves.

What I like is the mix. Next to the tropical fish are piranhas, which the listing describes as shy despite their reputation and their teeth, and pike, one of the biggest predators in Luxembourg’s waters. For a child, seeing the film villain and the local river fish side by side is quite a draw.

Is Wasserbillig Aquarium worth it?

With children, on a Moselle day, yes. At €3 for an adult and €1.50 for a child, or free with the LuxembourgPass, there’s little to lose. The fish are fed in front of visitors every day, with commentary, and I’d try to catch that, although the listing doesn’t give a time.

Without children, I’d see it as a passing stop. It isn’t a big-city aquarium, so don’t come expecting one.

Opening times and two warnings

In the week of 30 September 2026, visitluxembourg showed it open on Wednesday between 10:00 and 18:00 and from Friday through Sunday between 10:00 and 17:00, with Monday, Tuesday and Thursday closed. If you’re planning around a weekday, that Thursday closure is the one that catches people out, so I’d build the Moselle day around a Wednesday or the weekend. The listing warns that times change. The two details I wouldn’t overlook are the 15:45 last admission and the fact that tickets can only be paid by credit card, so a UK card is fine but cash isn’t.

Getting there and what else to do

Wasserbillig has a station on the railway from the capital to Trier, and second class is free for everyone in Luxembourg, whether you arrived at Findel or on the train from Brussels. After the aquarium, the natural move is down to the confluence of the Sûre and the Moselle, the Spatz, which at 130 metres is the lowest point in the country, according to the local tourist office, and then upriver along the Luxembourg Moselle Valley. If you fancy another cheap outing with children, Park Sënnesräich up north also lets pass holders into its museum free.
