The village of Bissen seen from the Wobierg, with its rooftops, the church and Gutland fields in spring

Bissen is a commune in the canton of Mersch with 3,564 residents on 1 January 2026, split between Bissen and Roost. It's a working, fast-growing village with St Roch's chapel on top of the Wobierg and, in Roost, the Luxlait Vitarium, a discovery centre all about milk that was open daily from 9am to 5pm in late September 2026.

Full read: 2 min

  • Bissen has 3,564 residents across two localities, Bissen and Roost.
  • Roost is home to the Luxlait Vitarium, a discovery centre about milk.
  • St Roch's chapel on the Wobierg recalls the 17th-century plague.
  • There's no station; come by car or bus.

Bissen is a rainy-day plan with children rather than a village to wander. I'd do the Vitarium in Roost in the morning and, if the sky clears, walk up the Wobierg to see the village from the chapel.

St Roch's chapel, on top of the Wobierg, recalls the ravages of plague in the 17th century and cholera two centuries later.

  3. 03 My tip

    Guided visits on request

In late September 2026 the Vitarium opened daily from 9am to 5pm, with guided visits on request, according to visitluxembourg.

Bissen doesn’t dress itself up. The Guttland regional tourist office opens its description by mentioning Goodyear and ArcelorMittal, both with sites in the commune, and a village that has grown a lot as a place to live over recent decades. Behind that working image there’s a past the village is proud of, according to the regional office, and a visit children tend to enjoy far more than their parents expect.

What is the Vitarium in Roost?

Roost, the commune’s second locality, is home to the Luxlait Vitarium, the visitor centre of one of Europe’s most modern dairies. visitluxembourg stresses that it isn’t a mere factory tour but a journey through the world of milk, with interactive stations, educational workshops, 3D film screenings and cookery sessions, designed to teach nature, the human body and health through play. There’s a shop selling local produce too.

In the last days of September and first days of October 2026, visitluxembourg had it open daily from 9am to 5pm, with guided visits on request. No price is published, so I’d check before turning up with the whole family. More ideas like this are under Luxembourg with kids.

The village and the Wobierg

On top of the Wobierg, above the village, stands St Roch’s chapel, a reminder of the plague that swept through in the 17th century and the cholera that followed two hundred years later. Behind it stretches farmland and woodland crossed by country lanes and footpaths, and the view back over the roofs is the one in the photo on this page.

Down below, the centre gathers the parish church, a bridge over the Attert and buildings from past centuries, which the regional office describes as harmonious and unhurried. There’s also a historical footnote in visitluxembourg’s listing for nearby Pettingen Castle. In 1837 Bissen was sold, together with Pettingen, to the Duke of Arenberg, a reminder of how estates here changed hands.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Luxemburgo on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

Is it worth the detour?

With children on a wet day, yes, because the Vitarium opens daily and it’s indoors, which isn’t something the Luxembourg countryside offers in abundance. Without children, I’d save it for people who’ve already done the big names and want to see an ordinary Guttland village that works and grows, with no tourist dressing. The climb up the Wobierg is short, and the view over the roofs is worth the effort.

Getting there and combining it

Bissen isn’t on the CFL rail network. Drive, or hop on a bus, which costs nothing here, and look up the route on mobiliteit.lu first. It’s close to Mersch, with its castle and station, and to Colmar-Berg, home of the Grand Duke’s castle. Those three stops make a full day in the centre of the country, and I’d head back to the capital to sleep.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
