Mondercange isn't a destination and I won't pretend otherwise. It's a handy base for the south, with more hotels than its neighbours, and it has one plan that makes some people's trip, a few laps of the kart track where Formula 1 drivers cut their teeth.

01 Worth the splurge
Schumacher and Trulli's kart track
An 867-metre outdoor circuit, officially opened in 1974, with hire karts for children and adults. The LuxembourgPass gets you 10% off.

03 My tip
Sleep in a cardboard hut
Behind the Beim Nëssert cultural centre in Bergem is one of the Minett Trail lodges, built from 24 layers of recycled cardboard moulded around a huge machine.
Minett Trail
Mondercange is in the Minett, but it lacks the industrial feel of its neighbours. The commune explains why without fuss. The steel boom of the late 19th century turned Esch, Differdange and Dudelange into small cities, and barely brushed Mondercange. Its four villages, Mondercange, Bergem, Foetz and Pontpierre, stayed on the land until the big population rise of the 1970s and 1980s.
Older than it looks
The first written mention dates from 965, in the deed by which Count Sigefroi handed his rights over the village to Echternach Abbey. In 1989 the remains of a large Roman villa rustica turned up and were excavated by the National Museum, proof that people lived here in Gallo-Roman times. What followed was grim. There were witch trials in the late 16th century, plague halved the population around 1620 and the wars of the 17th century burned the village more than once.
What you see today arrives with the 18th century and Austrian rule under Maria Theresa. The present church went up in 1738 and is listed as a national monument for its baroque architecture. In 1804 Mondercange had 80 houses, Bergem 20 and Pontpierre and Foetz 21, with 21 people listed as poor and three as beggars. In 1900 the commune counted 1,016 people. Today it’s 7,312.
Things to do in Mondercange
Not much in the way of monuments, quite a lot in the open air. visitluxembourg mentions the Mettendall pond with a children’s playground and a path across the Alzette plain between Pontpierre and Bergem. The Park Molter, whose redesign the landscape architect Andrea Weier presented to about 70 residents in March 2019, reopened on 12 May 2023 and has a free book-swap cupboard, open every day. Between the capital and Esch you’ll also find Reckange-sur-Mess, six rural villages joined together since 1784.
The plan with most pull is the kart track on rue de Limpach, an outdoor circuit 867 metres long and 7 to 8 metres wide. It officially opened in 1974 and, according to visitluxembourg, hosted major championships with drivers such as Michael Schumacher and Jarno Trulli. Today it hires out karts for children and adults, opens on public holidays and gives 10% off with the LuxembourgPass.

Walking the Minett Trail
Two stages of the Minett Trail pass through Bergem. One comes in from Schifflange station in 6.12 km, and the next continues to Bettembourg station in 12.01 km. Behind the Beim Nëssert cultural centre is the trail’s lodge, a small sustainable hut made from 24 layers of recycled cardboard. To my mind few lodges on the route are as original.
Where to stay
In 2025 Mondercange had four hotels or similar establishments on STATEC’s books, more than in Dudelange (two) or Bettembourg (one). If you’d rather have a livelier town in the evening, hotels in Esch-sur-Alzette are right next door.
