Gare de Luxembourg, on the place de la Gare

Luxembourg's central station, inside and out

Luxembourg railway station, the Gare de Luxembourg or Gare Centrale, stands on the place de la Gare in the Gare district. Every domestic and international train arrives here. It has left luggage from 06:15 to 21:30 (€3 under 4 hours, €5 up to 24), free wifi, ticket sales, and stops for tram T1 and buses, including the 29 to the airport.

  • The main station is the Gare de Luxembourg, on the place de la Gare.
  • It has left luggage from 06:15 to 21:30 (€3 up to 4 hours, €5 up to 24) and free wifi.
  • Tram T1 and bus 29 stop outside, both free and both running to the airport.
  • The FCDO flags it for pickpockets, so keep an eye on your bags.

If you arrive by train in the morning and can't check in yet, drop your case at the left luggage office and take the tram into town. €3 buys you up to four hours bag-free, and the airport has no left luggage at all.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 My tip

Left luggage for €3 or €5

CFL's left luggage opens daily from 06:15 to 21:30. Under 4 hours costs €3, 4 to 24 hours €5, and each further 24 hours started another €5. On 24 December it closes at 19:00.

  2. 02 Getting there

Tram and bus on the same square

Outside the station you'll find tram T1, for Hamilius, Kirchberg and the airport, and the number 29 bus, which also goes to Findel. Both are free.

    Pickpockets at the station

The FCDO singles out the main station, Gare de Luxembourg, for pickpockets, and Spain's foreign ministry flags a medium risk around it. Rucksack on your front, phone in an inside pocket.

    train to Luxembourg

What I would book

Almost every trip to Luxembourg passes through the central station sooner or later. It’s where the trains from Brussels and Paris terminate, where services leave for Clervaux and Esch, and where the tram and buses meet. If you’re only coming for the day, my plan is in Luxembourg day trip from Brussels. Knowing what’s inside pays off, because a couple of its services, left luggage above all, can rescue half a day.

Location and name

Its official name is Gare de Luxembourg, and the tram stop outside is called Gare Centrale. It sits on the place de la Gare, in the district that takes its name, south of the Pétrusse valley. The old town is across the valley, and there are two easy ways over, the tram to Hamilius or a walk across the Adolphe Bridge or the Passerelle viaduct. The neighbourhood itself, with its architecture and feel, is covered in Luxembourg Gare district.

Left luggage, the station’s most useful service

Findel airport has no left luggage, as its operator says outright, pointing you to the station instead. The service is run by CFL and opens daily from 06:15 to 21:30. On 24 December it closes early, at 19:00, and on the 25th it opens at 07:00. It costs €3 to leave a bag for under four hours and €5 for four to 24 hours, plus €5 for each further 24 hours started. And to avoid carrying more than you need, see what to pack for Luxembourg.

For me it neatly solves the classic problem of the arrival day and the departure day. You get in mid-morning and can’t check in until the afternoon, or you’ve checked out and your flight home is in the evening. For €3 you can wander the old town without dragging a case over the cobbles.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Luxemburgo on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

Tickets and machines

The station houses one of CFL’s two sales centres in the country, selling regional and international tickets and passes. There are also machines on the platforms, in the main hall and on the bus station platform, working round the clock in four languages, English included. Here they take banknotes from €5 to €50 as well, €100 notes only if you’re paying €40 or more, and never €200 or €500.

If you booked a TGV on the SNCF website, two self-service machines here print it free, as long as you insert the very card you paid with. Without it, the international counter will print a digital ticket for €6. For domestic second class you need nothing at all, as I explain in trains in Luxembourg.

Wifi, a shop and taxis

Every CFL station has free wifi; pick the CFL-FREE-WIFI network and accept the terms on the page that pops up. Useful if your UK tariff doesn’t include much European data. The rest of what you need to know about your phone is in Luxembourg roaming. There’s a CFL cactus shoppi open seven days a week and Snack O’Quai vending machines on the platforms. Outside, taxis from several firms wait, though fares in Luxembourg are unregulated, so ask the rate before you get in. That and other small traps are covered in Luxembourg scams.

If you’re driving, the station has a covered car park at a CFL tariff, which you can manage through the CFL P+R app.

Arriving with a bike is easy too. CFL runs free secure bikebox shelters, 63 of them near its stations, and repair points with free tools and a pump. Just remember that riding on platforms and in stations is strictly banned, so wheel it until you’re out on the street.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Luxemburgo on Expedia and filter by area before price.

Getting to the old town and the airport

Tram T1 stops right outside. Northbound it takes you to Hamilius, by the old town, then on through Kirchberg to the airport, which it has served since 2 March 2025. The number 29 bus also links the station with Findel. Both are free. The tram’s times and stops are in Luxembourg tram.

Watch out for pickpockets on the platforms

It’s the warning two governments repeat. The FCDO names the Gare de Luxembourg itself as the station where pickpockets are most active, and Spain’s foreign ministry rates the streets around it as medium risk. It isn’t a dangerous place, but it’s where you most need to keep your wits about your bag and phone. My tips, with the emergency numbers, are in is Luxembourg safe.

For an early train or a dawn flight, sleeping close by is the practical, stress-free choice, and there are options in hotels near Luxembourg station.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Luxemburgo and pick one that fits your day.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.

If you still need a way in, check the best ticket deals to Luxembourg from where you are.
