Tandel, the commune of Brandenbourg's castle ruins

Tandel is a commune in the canton of Vianden with 2,374 residents on 1 January 2026, spread over eleven localities including Bastendorf, Fouhren, Brandenbourg and Tandel itself. Its big draw is the ruin of Brandenbourg Castle, free to enter from April to October, and the Kinneksknäppchen viewpoint facing it.

  • Tandel has 2,374 residents and eleven localities in the canton of Vianden.
  • The Brandenbourg ruins are free to enter from 1 April to 31 October.
  • St Mark's chapel at Longsdorf draws pilgrims on 25 April.
  • There are no hotels; stay in Vianden.

Tandel is for anyone who has already done Vianden and wants a castle with no ticket office and no crowds. I'd visit Brandenbourg in the morning, then climb the Kinneksknäppchen to see it from across the valley, and sleep in Vianden.

  3. 03 My tip

St Mark's chapel on 25 April

The chapel at Longsdorf, with two naves and a baroque altar, is a pilgrimage spot, above all on 25 April, its patron saint's day.

Tandel is a commune that isn’t named after its biggest village, not by a long way. According to the commune’s website, in 2022 Tandel had 116 residents, while Bastendorf had 594, Fouhren 402 and Brandenbourg 324. Altogether the commune had 2,374 people on 1 January 2026, according to STATEC, which makes it the most populous in the canton of Vianden, ahead of Vianden itself.

Where the commune comes from

Its roots lie in a reshuffle two centuries ago, told on the website of neighbouring Putscheid. A royal decree of 25 October 1827 created the commune of Bastendorf from the sections of Landscheid, Brandenbourg, Kippenhof, Tandel and Bastendorf. Today the national register, the official list used for postal addresses, gives it eleven localities, from Bettel and Walsdorf to Longsdorf and Seltz, across 4,173 hectares.

Brandenbourg, the reason people come

The main reason to come is the ruin of Brandenbourg Castle, above the village of the same name. visitluxembourg explains that it began more than a thousand years ago as a wooden fort and that the stone buildings went up in the 13th century, including the keep that still stands. Most of the ruin is open free of charge through the April to October season, with panels to guide you at your own pace. Noble families such as the Blochausens held it, and among the remains you can make out the lower courtyard, the great ceremonial hall and the castle chapel.

To see it whole you need to step away. Visit Éislek points to the Kinneksknäppchen, a hilltop whose name refers to a king, as the viewpoint over the ruins. The village has its own page at Brandenbourg.

Longsdorf and its chapel

Longsdorf has St Mark’s chapel, which visitluxembourg describes as a popular pilgrimage spot, especially on 25 April, the saint’s feast day. It has two naves, geometric paintings and a baroque altar. For me it’s a good stop if you’re already heading to Brandenbourg, no more than that, and a quiet one outside the late-April pilgrimage.

Is the detour worth it?

With only one day in the north, no. Vianden fills it on its own. With two days, or if you’re driving and prefer ruined castles to restored ones, yes, because Brandenbourg comes with no queues and no ticket-office hours, surrounded by woodland. I’d pair it with Bourscheid, further west and the big castle of the area.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Vianden on Expedia and filter by area before price.

Staying and getting around

STATEC counted no hotels in Tandel in 2025, just one campsite. The logical base is Vianden. By bus, the commune posted notices in September 2026 of disruption on RGTR lines between Ettelbruck and Vianden, one of them for 3 October, so I’d check mobiliteit.lu first. Tandel is one of the eight communes of the Our Nature Park.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Vianden and pick one that fits your day.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
